    There's really not a great answer here, but on our boat we primarily use Sunbum. We keep the spray for when we're on shore, and the cream for the boats.

    Are you sure it was a Shurhold BLUE brush. There are other out there with blue but they are not the same. The fibers in the blue brush a softer than the isinglass so they will not scratch. With that said other contaminants on the glass or in the brush if it was dirty could have caused the issue.

    @@Shurhold can you recommend anything that can remove fine scratches ?

  • @WillN2Go1
    @WillN2Go16 ай бұрын

    May not be the brush, it may be particulates that settled on the isinglass that are being dragged around by the brush. Always check if there's a grit build up. (Sand is mostly quartz and quartz is glass. Very hard, very sharp corners.) . The gentlest wiping of the surface does a lot more removal than water alone. For isinglass, hose first, soapy water and microfiber cloth to wipe off the gunk. Maybe think of the brush or cloth not so much as wiping it, certainly not scrubbing it, but moving the soap around. My boat is in California where the Santa Ana winds blow fine sand hundreds of miles. Removing that layer is always step one. Vehicle pollutants leave s gummy residue, sand particles embed in this. Soap breaks down this gum, floats particles. Another factor is at West Marine a boat brush on a pole is $40 to $60, at Ace the 'same' brush is $10 to $20. But is it really the same? They seem the same... but they may not be. I use the cheaper brush (put a pool noodle on any of these brushes. Stupidly they do not float.) I've used it on my isinglass and haven't noticed any scratches. I'm really impressed with just how good isinglass really is. And for general washing of almost anything: Dawn dish soap. I really like the new spray bottle. One was on my boat when I bought it, seemed like a little soap for a lot of money. Then I googled how to make that spray Dawn. First buy one of the bottles. The sprayer is worth it. The formula for 16 ounces (about 500mL) four tablespoons of dawn two tablespoons of isopropyl alcohol (60 to 90% doesn't matter), the rest the cleanest water you have. After oil spills they wash sea birds with Dawn, to get off the oil, but keep the feather's natural oils. Hope this helps and thanks Shurhold for the video. I have some of your products.

    Very informative, Barry. I assume engines are kept running. I have a 27' sailboat and this will be my first time through locks. Biggest concern: my crewmate dropped out of this part. I wonder if I can handle it solo... Is there enough line so I can be in between the cleats? Seems unlikely and very difficult to maintain control.

  • @Shurhold
    @Shurhold2 жыл бұрын

    People do it solo, but as the boat gets longer it gets harder to do. There is usually plenty of line. Down is harder than up. They ask that you kill your engines while in the lock.
