    Right? I feel like a lot of battles in FoG are almost 50/50 right up until the end and it's an all or nothing break at that point.

    I'm looking at ways to more effectively use my generals during combat and for the purposes of better battlefield organization and morale. I know that there's a distinct advantage to having organization with generals, but I haven't quite grokked that point yet. More reasons to play! :)

    @@pacificusfoxI’m also still learning, generals have some Byzantine rule sets that I don’t 100% understand but I hear that properly assigning them and re-deploying them to other units around the battlefield at the right time is important in competitive FoG.

  • @pacificusfox
    @pacificusfoxАй бұрын

    That would make sense. You would assume that generals have an outsized impact on the battle. I think that a general has an AoE that gives a buff to morale, but I haven't quite figured exactly how to properly take advantage of that. It can be decisive for sure!

    You would likely not have fared so well in game with the battle. Otherwise the cost in authority will be felt for a long time, I wonder if there wasn't an independent region just north of you or did Scotland already take that?

  • @pacificusfox
    @pacificusfoxАй бұрын

    Yeah, I was surprised at how long the negative authority impacted gameplay for the duration that it lasted. It really dragged us down in terms of moving up that ladder. There were two independent regions in the north, but we didn't have the naval transport capacity to go around Scotland to get to them. They were my first potential targets.

    31:09 you can adjust the scale of imported battles from the filed of glory medieval option menu. i like to keep them at very small because i don't like 2 hour battles.

    Thanks for the tip, I didn't know that was possible. Yeah, I was surprised when I first exported the battle since I was used to the scale being larger in FoG Medieval.

    Can't quite put my finger on why but Empires feels more 'joined up' than this one. The late game for both iterations still results in a near-unmanageable mess. The battle export remains clunky AF and is, let's be honest, a means to cheat your way of a bad spot. (Exported battles are rather easy to win.)

  • @pacificusfox
    @pacificusfoxАй бұрын

    I'm interested in what late game feels like. Honestly, I haven't completed a full game in either Empires or Kingdoms yet, and I'm not sure at what point it might feel like you're "done" with a particular playthrough or when you get to that point where it feels like you're indomitable. Do you feel like you get to the point of the game feeling unmanageable before that? In your opinion, does it feel like the turn times are too long, does the pacing slow down, does it feel like your decisions aren't as impactful, does it feel repetitive/uninteresting, etc.? I haven't tried an export as of yet. I feel like it would only be interesting if the battle is evenly matched or if you're at a disadvantage but absolutely have to pull off a win at a crucial point. Honestly, in a game with a scope as large as this (and most other 4x strategy games), individual battles rarely feel as if they deserve an export.

    Yeah, it's pretty crazy, especially when titles and kingdoms are transferred from one person to another and your vassals start conducting wars on their own accord. I've found that a fair amount of territorial expansion happens when my vassals take it upon themselves to expand the kingdom without my interference, although this also results in occasionally having to fight in wars that I had no role in starting.

I'm really enjoying the world building of this alternate history; there's a strong feeling of emergent gameplay that is dependent on family/dynastic dynamics that really makes the game progress differently from other 4X titles, even compared to other Paradox games.

It is also possible and vey fun in multiplayer. Maybe also fun to make a video on that? If you want we can try a multiplayer game some day? Greetings, from The Netherlands.

    Hi Coen! I first started playing Rome II with just Divide et Impera. I haven't actually played "vanilla" Rome 2, and I haven't really added other mods on top of DeI because I'm not sure if there'd be any compatibility issues. I haven't played any multiplayer games since I'm more into the strategic rather than the tactical side of the game, but that might change depending on whether I put in the time to get good at the tactical aspects of the TW games!

    You need to make hard choices. In the case of Ilmatar, you should have just claimed her title. Never mind the reputation loss, you can get that back by raiding and waging war. Many times past you have not made the right decision because it seems To have a bad effect but that is only short term, this game is played by having the long-term benefits In mind

  • @pacificusfox

    Thanks for the input. I'm still learning the ins and outs of reputation gain and loss and what actual effects that might have on a character's (and hence, a given domain's) play. I also like to role play a bit, and I haven't gotten too many monarchs/rulers who wouldn't mind being seen as tyrannical by their subjects, though I have used the disinherit option as a kind of proxy primogeniture with great success, regardless of the loss of opinion of those affected. You are right though, thinking about the long-term effects of certain decisions on the whole kingdom is important when considering a plan of action. I think as I become more familiar with the dynamics of power in the game and how to retain it (for example, what to do about holding two kingdom titles with no primogeniture law and enforced partition and using the disinherit option to great effect) I will be more clear on certain strategies.

    Sort of wack how some of the areas within Kingdom of Finland have (modern) Finnish Names, some have Swedish names and I think some have Latinized names.

  • @pacificusfox
    @pacificusfox3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, there are a couple really obvious areas like Nyland and Aland which are obviously Swedish, and some of the areas in the Baltic area are Latinized (and not Latvian or Lithuanian). There's also places like Memel which are (early) German, but there's also instances where the original Prussian names are retained. I know the folks at Paradox work hard to ensure a degree of accuracy, and sometimes I think they just have to split the difference between what's technically more accurate for the time period and what's more familiar to people without specialized knowledge. Hats off to them for keeping some of the Sami names--that was something I wasn't expecting, but good on them. I was also wondering if some of the names would change to Finnish equivalents depending on who controlled them, but I haven't seen that happen yet.

    Can you streighten areas. Build them military and resource ways?

  • @pacificusfox
    @pacificusfox3 жыл бұрын

    I've maxed out a few buildings in my capital region with the tech that's available to me at the moment. It seems that the acquisition of new innovations is pretty static at this point in the game and I just have to wait for them to develop for the most part. I'm wary of developing some of the counties because of the succession laws at this point that split the realm up automatically--I'm hesitant to strengthen areas that might devolve to a treacherous vassal and might be more difficult to recapture if the fort and garrison areas are strengthened. I'm much more likely to build those areas up once I can be sure that all the counties/titles will be transferred to one main heir.

  • @pacificusfox

    I looked it up the other day and there are a bunch of different kinds of buildings depending on the type of holding (castle, city, temple). Since we're still in the tribal era, I can't build any of the holdings other than the ones I already have, and the tech/innovation trees unlock a bunch of different kinds of buildings that I'm looking forward to exploring and building as the game develops. :)

  • @naturewort6592

    @@pacificusfox That makes sense. Interested to see how thinhs go forwarded. For me it starts to look like tribe työpe game is harder than many other. Way more equal between different between tribes and hard to grow many ways.

  • @pacificusfox
    @pacificusfox3 жыл бұрын

    I'm also excited to see how the game goes going forward. The tribal dynamic is very different from the baronies that I was used to from the first Crusader Kings game, and I'm not sure if they introduced that in CK2 since I didn't play it. Before you find the right innovation and progress to the early Middle Ages, there's nothing short of being nefarious that can prevent your entire realm from being split up between all your possible heirs. It definitely makes you think about strategy differently because you can't just amass a bunch of counties and expect your chiefdom to remain intact once your successor rises to power. It explains a lot of the nearly constant warfare with claims constantly changing hands between petty chiefdoms.

    Finally starting to get around to unlocking a bunch of the buildings for the holdings, but a lot of them are locked behind certain innovations/techs.
