Loved this so much! Your spreads are so beautiful! ❤ I was trying to read more sci-fi in 2023-24 and tried to pick books that offer something beyond just sci-fi (which I did like when I was younger but hadn't explored much in my 20s). Didn't read as many as I planned to yet but as examples, I picked Grass by Sheri S. Tepper for its feminist lean, Exhalation because Ted Chiang and because it's a set of stories exploring different aspects of sci-fi. So I guess I pick books that have ideas that speak to me beyond the genre itself somehow, if that helps.

Loved all the spreads but especially the last one, so creative 🖤 And what you said on "Earthlings" really resonated with me. I've only read her "Convenience store woman" and even though there were many important topics touched, I hated the way the author presents them. Like, for instance, I could relate to MC being childfree, but in that one scene she straight up thinks of unaliving her sister's baby so that it would stop crying. I guess being childfree in a traditional society is controversial enough and there isn't any need to throw in things like that other than for shock value.
@chiara.kikisbookishservice2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much 💕 oh wow, I think I completely blocked out that part from convenience store woman until remembering now... but yes, there's much more of that in earthlings except in this one she actually acts on her dark thoughts
@grff_2 ай бұрын
Thanks for your review of Earthlings! When people call books "weird" it just makes me wanna read them more, i like the off putting feel some books can give, but i definitely don't like something like how you described that book, I'll take it off my list of books to buy😅

Yes same, I love quirky and odd books! I'm glad I got to warn you 😅
@themidnightreader2 ай бұрын
I now feel entirely justified by having no desire at all to read earthlings 😂 I really appreciated you calling it out for being way more than weird. I don't mind sad books or twisted themes, but yeah I agree with what you, it has to end somehow with a bit of hope or I don't want to spend the time reading it. I think I would definitely enjoy scythe!
@chiara.kikisbookishservice2 ай бұрын
Haha yes definitely would stay away from that one 😂 I want no part of this booktube trend of recommending shocking and outrageous books haha. But would definitely recommend Scythe!! Some called it a worthy successor to the hunger games and I might agree... (minus the nostalgia)

I FINALLY got to watch this video till the end! 💕 I read Remain of the Day by Ishiguru first and I absolutely enjoyed that one a lot more than his other works. I think in total I've read 4-5 of his books and still my first read remained my most favorite. Never Let Me Go though was a one star for me 😁 couldn't connect with it but Remain of the Day had a certain melancholy in it that I really felt... if you ever decide to pick it up, I hope you'll love it ❣ and Circe! yay! such an amazing book that one. I really need to reread it for sure. I remember during the pandemic, I dedicated December to retellings / gods related stories and I read the Percy Jackson series, both Miller's books and Neil Gaiman's American Gods and Norse Mythology. it was the best reading month I had ❤

you are definitely inspiring me to pick up some mary oliver poetry 😊So glad you enjoyed Circe! It was one of the first greek retellings I read and I've found myself finding all the rest since falling a bit short. It had a very special something that made it work so profoundly well. Also congratulations I think you definitely found the most pretentious sentences in literature, I'm laughing so hard. Dirty little bookworm is definitely going in the rotation.

@chiara.kikisbookishservice2 ай бұрын
Ahh it's been the opposite for me haha, Never Let Me Go seemed a safe choice because it's kind of dark academia, the others sound a little more intimidating to me. Glad to hear you enjoyed the Buried Giant, I think I may read that one next! Thank you ❤️ And thank you for the poetry recommendation!

I've been meaning to ask you for a long time, where do you get your ideas from? Does anything inspire you to make these spreads like the way you make them?? Maybe I'm out of loop, but so far I've seen, you are the only one who makes such distinct journal spreads on KZread. It's very unique. That's why I'm curious. Have you tried painting before?? Oohh!! So many questions 😅
@chiara.kikisbookishservice3 ай бұрын
Ahhh thanks for the question, I hope I can answer it 😅 I usually just try to create something that has a similar vibe to the book. Sometimes a specific passage or element from the book inspires me, like Manderley in Rebecca or the Hogwarts letter from Harry Potter, and other times I start from the general atmosphere of for example dark academia which always makes me go for scrapbooking or if there's something whimsical I go for doodles and patterns. Sometimes I'm completely stuck and that's when I try to find inspiration elsewhere, like music or movies that I associate with the book or I start doodling until something halfway decent comes out 😅 I hope that somehow answers it haha? It's not an exact process, but usually it goes kind of like this! I've not really painted before, except for some attempts at small water colour paintings. I always like it when I managed to include it in a spread, I wish I would think of it more often!

I'm so happy to hear that! 🥰 that book is such a gem, glad you enjoyed it too!
Love this new cinematic style!
Thank you 🥰 glad you like it!!
Thank you so much 💕 oh wow, I think I completely blocked out that part from convenience store woman until remembering now... but yes, there's much more of that in earthlings except in this one she actually acts on her dark thoughts
Thanks for your review of Earthlings! When people call books "weird" it just makes me wanna read them more, i like the off putting feel some books can give, but i definitely don't like something like how you described that book, I'll take it off my list of books to buy😅
Yes same, I love quirky and odd books! I'm glad I got to warn you 😅
I now feel entirely justified by having no desire at all to read earthlings 😂 I really appreciated you calling it out for being way more than weird. I don't mind sad books or twisted themes, but yeah I agree with what you, it has to end somehow with a bit of hope or I don't want to spend the time reading it. I think I would definitely enjoy scythe!
Haha yes definitely would stay away from that one 😂 I want no part of this booktube trend of recommending shocking and outrageous books haha. But would definitely recommend Scythe!! Some called it a worthy successor to the hunger games and I might agree... (minus the nostalgia)
i'm so glad you enjoyed scythe as much as I did! I loved your spreads 🥰
Yess I really loved it!! Thank you 💕
I would say Scythe is a futuristic "slice of life" 🥁
And a rather literal one ;)
Ohh the Remains of the Day hadn't really been on my list, but it is now haha. And definitely feel like I should read more retellings after Circe!!!
I love your spread for Doe maar niet! Thank you for translating those quotes for us, I’m so jealous you got to read it. It seems like an interesting read!
I’ll have to pick up the Assassin’s Apprentice! I like an easy to follow fantasy. In that vein you might like Tress On The Emerald Sea!
Thank you!! I wasn't sure if people would be interested in Dutch books, but it was such a nice read I had to include it somehow! Thanks for that recommendation, it seems like the whimsical fantasy type I would enjoy ☺️
Beautiful journal
you are definitely inspiring me to pick up some mary oliver poetry 😊So glad you enjoyed Circe!
Yess please do! They are such sparkles of joy. Ahh yes that's what I fear now too, Circe may have raised the bar too high 🙃
Never Let Me Go sounds intriguing 🤔! I’ve been “scared” 😅of it. I really enjoyed Buried Giant, Klara & the Sun and Remains of the Day! Mary Oliver is a favorite. ♥️🌿 lovely wrap up as always! ☺️😍♥️✨I recommend the collection of poetry by Wendell Berry called ‘Peace of Wild Things’.
As always, your spreads are works of art, my favorite being the ones for Circe and Never let me go. And your impressions of Franny and Zooey made me want to re-read it. I used to adore Salinger, but haven't re-read his works in a long time
Thank you for your supportive words as always!! Franny and Zooey was quite a surprise for me, I'd only read the Catcher in the Rye before which was yeaars ago, but now I want to read the rest of his work too!
I love your content and creativity. Just wanted to say that I was watching this video with my fiancé and we both agree that you can DEFINITELY narrate audiobooks
Thank you so much!! Ohhh I'd actually love to try out narrating an audiobook. I've been really enjoying reading passages in these wrap up videos lately, so I might try some day ☺️
Such a beautiful video and beautiful spreads. I love how creative you are with each reading review, I am amazed by how unique they turn out <3
Thank you so much!! Glad you like the spreads 💕
