Basically, I'm an IT engineer, certificated private pilot, and learning guitarist. I'm not some hardcore looking to shred and start a band or anything like that. Between working full-time, grad school, and all the other crap I get into. There is just not enough time in a day. So I time-slice every day. I hope you enjoy my videos as I live life's journey...

A couple of minor things. Don't switch your aux power to APU until your APU is up and running. The start order for C-130J engines by the checklist is 3-4-2-1. Always start #3 first as that has your primary electrical generator. Once that's running you can switch off your aux power and your batt. Also make sure your oil flaps are set to auto before start any engine otherwise your oil will over heat.

Yeah, DCS is highly detailed. Especially in VR and in high fidelity aircraft. VR brings a whole new level of immersion. As a pilot IRL, the first time I dropped into the sim cockpit using VR, I was overwhelmed by the level of detail. Even though I knew I wasn't moving, the motion being fed to my brain through the visuals gave me vertigo for a short while. I also blurted out "Whoa!" a few times. Now I don't think I could fly in the sim any other way.

The Tu-160 still flying caught me off-guard. It said the Tu was destroyed after the 2nd missile hit; which it said the Tu was destroyed. But I guess it was able to stay up on one engine. The R-77M was just a little too far out and lost steam within a couple miles from the Tu-160. It was a loooooonnnnnng shot anyway. With more altitude it would have hit.

The RWR going off is due to it's proximity to the SAM site at the airbase. It tapers off once I get some distance away. And for some reason, one of the F-16s decided to follow me and it's radar was locking me the whole time..

The MiG-21bis is an agile fighter for it's day. However, it's NO match for fighters like the MiG-29, F-16, or F/A-18. The P2W ratios of more modern fighters is much higher. And they can turn tighter and fast than the 21. Still, the 21 is a joy to fly. I'd love to get my hands on a surplus 21 if I had excessive amount of $$$. Yeah right! You can buy a MiG-29 Fulcrum for about $5 mil. Cost you around $60k per flight. Yeah, I have no wealthy relatives.... ;-)

A little context to this video. I was returning from a successful intercept mission. I actually dropped two outboard IR missiles to balance the MiG-21. As I approached the airport, I assumed a position in the pattern around 2k feet @ around 500 kph. You see me checking my position relative to the runway and adjusting my position to widen my pattern a little. Middle of the runway, flaps to 20. End of the runway, extend landing gear. Then a turning base to final, keeping my speed above 300 kph. Near final, flaps to full. I notice that I'm getting a little slow (near 300 kph). So If you look, you can see my engine rpms go from 80ish % to 90+% as the MiG is as dirty as it gets and this engine power setting is required. I only recently discovered that full flaps disables the afterburners. So if for some reason, you get too slow and need to go around, you have to go flaps 20 to have the AB available. As with most of the MiGs, they tend to encounter dramatic sink rates at slower speeds. You're not stalling the aircraft, it just needs more speed to produce lift. Otherwise, it will pancake the runway too hard for the landing gear; either bending the gear and/or blowing the tires. As I start to flare the nose, some 20-30 feet above the runway, I just wait and slowly reduce engine power. This is pretty standard for landing aircraft IRL. Just wait, let it settle in ground effect. I probably could have waited even longer and had a smoother touch-down without reducing power. I certainly had enough runway to do it. In cases where you have limited runway, you gotta get the feet on the runway and begin braking ASAP. When that happens, the MiG-21 has both a drag chute and good brakes and will slow quickly. You can hear me pull the throttle to idle after deploying the drag chute. Once I'm at taxi speed, I cut the drag chute loose and head for the parking ramp. In the MiG-21, there is NO nose-wheel steering. So you have to use a combination of rudder, brakes, and throttle to turn. Disturbed was added for your listening pleasure.. ;-)

Note that the whole point of this exercise was to hover-taxi in ground effect, practice slow stable flight, then pattern back around for landing; avoiding vortex ring state (VRS) when going to a hover state. The only symptoms is a heavy vibration before the helicopter stops flying. So keeping a forward momentum seems to avoid this state. The Huey is really bad about getting into VRS.

The auto-trim almost did me on initial lift-off. I wasn't expect it to shoot up like it did. Gotta be careful when using it.

Some of the runways do look like taxi-ways. Not sure why the video picked that frame. I'm just happy that I'm no longer breaking the landing gear. LOL The flight dynamics are pretty good in DCS. I returned from a mission today and when I flared, I floated down the runway. With the throttle at idle, it just kept floating. I had a headwind at 7 mph so I guess it was giving more lift than expected. So I had to do a go-around or break the jet when if finally stopped flying (stalled). I think I'm gonna move to the Tomcat next. ;-)
