    Loved the content here and will throw in another twist….when altering yet ANOTHER pair of pants, I free the hem first, then try them on, inside out, to gauge the amount of fabric to remove from the width of the legs, and mark the new seam with a chalk line. Easy-peasy!💕

    What do you do with the excess threads at the beginning and end of a stitch? Wouldn’t they unravel if just cut off?

  • @StylishDTailors
    @StylishDTailorsСағат бұрын

    Yes you cut them, and that's what the backstitch lever is for. It locks in your stitches.

    This is very informative! Thank you❤ I used to do tug of war with my fabrics once I start running it in the presser foot hahaha! A lot of broken or bent needles! Then one time I came across with my neighbor who used to work as master sewer for big garment company told me to learn the basic of machine speed. Because I am new to sewing, I first need to know how much pressure I need to put in order for the machine to run. Removing the needle while practicing the speed helped me a lot. I learned to guide the fabric in a slow moving machine. Then I also learned to look into the edge of presser foot to make sure its within the straight line of stitch.

    Not locking Tunnel Vision on the needle is a Though one… being self taught I could have used this instruction before having to seam rip an afternoon away. 🤦‍♂️ I would love a short demo on pining ❤. I don’t know how long it will take to break my bad pinning habits but I would at least like to know how to do it right. Sure, I watched other videos but soo many are dresses and draping with a smash cut to “look how great it turned out”… 😑. Dresses have a lot of ‘fudge’ work in them and nailing a neat tidy alterations on a thin dress shirt seems to need better fundamentals I have yet to absorb particularly in pinning. The rest I am getting good at, and my fudge work would make the Swiss jealous 😊.

    My favorite way it keep my seams straight is using a quilting foot. It’s the foot that looks almost crooked, broken, or like weird steps. Depending which part of the foot you’re looking at, you can get 1/8”, 1/4”, or 1/2” inch seam allowances. I’ve tried many different seam allowance products, but this one is by far the easiest to use. Also, I can change my seam allowance without adjusting anything except what edge I’m aligning my fabric up with.

    You are going to think me crazy and block me forever now. Instead of overpriced lotions and "so-called" moisturisers, which are just mineral oils and water, use an animal oil like tallow or duck-fat, apply a small amount then wear think plastic gloves overnight as you sleep. Super soft hands in the morning, don't wash off any residual in the morning after taking off the gloves, it just absorbs. You won't try this because it sounds crazy and a billion dollar cosmetics industry could not possibly have a vested interest could they?

    Can you talk on different needle types for different fabrics, please. I, thankfully, did a test run on a piece of metallic thread/shimmering type fabric. I was pretty horrified to see that the brand new needle was in fact cutting fibres as it was going through. The pattern said nothing about using a round tipped needle to slide through the fibres. I did go out and get them. But, silly me, knew nothing or didn’t think about checking the fit of the dress…and it turns out my waist length was shorter. I didn’t do a mockup. Bonus was that I got to sell both the long and short versions of the dresses and came out ahead. But I really wanted it for myself. Lesson learned. But I haven’t felt like doing anything since, (and life happened too.) Now I’m getting back into it and binge watching videos. Namaste and thank you,

    Yeah definitely, jersey needles are one that I need to mention more because it definitely has its place in DIY tailoring. As you saw, it's a game changer and one that everyone needs in addition to a universal and denim needle.

    Of course if don't have a fancy backstitch option you can always simply stop, raise the presser-foot, rotate the clothing 180°, then drop the presser-foot and cover the previous stitches.

    Side seams on a t-shirt or a dress shirt take about 30 seconds per side when running it through your sewing machine. If you already have your measurements from a previous similar sized garment you can skip the measuring step. And yup, a straight stitch is all I've ever used to alter my clothes. Never had any major issues at all.
