Thanks for the video. That finally enticed me to get into the game, i.e. open the box that has been waiting quietly for one year. I have one question. Because of several reasons (children, room, cat, gaming time-schedule), I favour Vassal for a lot of my wargames, the solo ones notably, Fields of Fire being a very good example. In your demonstration videos you usually have the charts embedded in the Vassal module. Do you scan the physical copies of the charts and then integrate them into the modules or do you get the charts in some electronic form from the publisher directly? For Fields of Fire I use both the files obtainable from GMT’s website and scans of the specific missions booklet that come in the box and are not publicly available. For the well known submarine games (Hunters/Hunted, Silent Victory, Beneath the Med) I also made scans of the charts found in the box, that I use together with an electronic version of the rules downloaded from the publisher’s page. This all is manageable but forces me to open several windows and to switch constantly between them and I would prefer to have everything embedded into Vassal, hence my question.

I scan in whatever I can't find digitally. Can be a pain sometimes. I get everything from them when I make an official module, but that is a courtesy for my labor! Books, I take out the staples so I can scan them better.

The only difference between mine and the released version is some charts. Everything else is the same. VASSAL is a great tool. Getting used to the interface is probable the hardest part. Most companies do the same thing as Compass, minimize charts to avoid Pirating. Some don't allow VASSAL at all. Charts that are missing, just keep the physical copy handy. I do most of my gaming on VASSAL as I have space issues and am disabled. Once you get used to the VASSAL interface, it gets much easier. When in doubt, right click, left click, double click to see how things react, interact. If you do something wrong, hit the undo button. That button is my friend!

That is a VASSAL control. If you double click quickly on a stack, it will expand. Then you can select individual counters and use their menus or just move them. The 4 arrow keys will also move a piece up/ down top/bottom within a stack. The should be a blue highlight on a single piece if you have it selected , otherwise the whole stack will be highlighted. Once you get used to VASSAL it is great, just some small things here and there to get the hang of.

Hi Greg. I am definitely noticing something not quite right with the kill logs. For some of my subs the lists are remaining true over time, but for some subs the kill logs are acting strange. I had one sub with a kill one turn, another kill later. It opens two kill logs windows, one for each kill. Another kill log opened later with the first line entry gone. I like this feature of the game, but I wished to bring it to your attention for feedback. I'm not complaining or trying to be a PITA, just hoping you like getting info from play testers. Hi Greg, I've been using the module to play SW and it is a great experience, speeding up the game and making tracking easier. I have found two things I'd like to pass on to you for your consideration: I think there may be a type of glitch in the individual subs' kill logs. When a sub gets a second or more kills, it opens another kill log box, cascading over the previous one. I was hoping to see the previous log, in which you could just drop down to the next line to add another kill. The other thing I ran into today was that there seems to be no way for the automatic tracking of ships sunk and tonnage to deal with the war event # 6, which allows you to double the tonnage of one or two ships sunk in a combat phase. It would be nice if possible for a means of appending the doubled tonnage to particular kills, so that the automatic tally was correct. I had a double tonnage sinking occur, so I kept a paper log from that point. Just suggestions, not complaints. I hope you find these of use. Thanks.

In the absence of a way to indicate the "to hit roll: beside each target I am doing that the same way as I do when playing the board game: I use d10s to indicate the "to hit" number and lay the dice out on paper combat table.
@randolphstead29886 ай бұрын
Hi Greg. Everything seems to be working well. I am logging individual sinkings in the sub's kill log. I make a simple entry like M 3T. Then in the notepad I keep a more detailed log with date & location of sinking, ship type & tonnage, name if a named ship. This is more for my fastidious inclination to keep records for post war analysis and as a backup for the sinkings tracking counters. I find that thing a little clunky. A few observations, if I may. From the videos I was under the impression that when subs returned to base the counters for spotted, RTB and such came off automatically. I have to do them manually. Am I doing something wrong? A wish, if you are seeking suggestions; I know you are busy, but a guy can dream... a box or means of putting in a "to hit" number next to targets would be nice. I am making such on a paper sheet. Really, no serious complaints. I am enjoying the ease of digital play and my wife is happy to get the dining room table back.

Hi Greg. Happy Saturday! I installed your module this morning. i had a bit of a slow start until I figured out how to separate the individual subs in a stack. Now that I have a sense of what I am doing I am loving it. I finished my board game Desperate Pearl campaign this morning with a narrow loss. I have been handicapping myself with the randomized reinforcement and returns from West Coast routine and that cost me a number of patrols from those subs. Perhaps the margin of victory. I am playing the campaign again and planning to take my reinforcements in week 1 as they arrive; I bet that will be the margin between victory and defeat. I am just loving how easy it is to pull draws from the cups, draw TDCs and then just hit the cleanup button. This module of yours is a winner in my opinion.

One thing I wish to mention: Is there the ability to write off a sub for constructive damage? This is a way to retire a heavily damaged sub without tallying it as sunk. Also, can you take subs out to send back for training purposes as the game occasionally demands?

Hi Greg. Will your module allow for the optional staggered reinforcements arrival and IJN unit arrivals? This spreads the arriving units across the four turns of a month randomly, so you don't have all units arriving or leaving at the beginning of the month. Also, will it allow for the damage of IJN units, whereby they are out of action and unavailable for cup draws until they have spent the assigned time in the repair yard? This VASSAL module looks great; thanks for sharing it.

@randolphstead29886 ай бұрын
@@Teufelhunde87 Hi Greg. That is how I play when I draw IJN ships that are not yet in play. My question relates specifically to the sub reinforcements. I like to add a bit of a handicap so that instead of all subs arriving in Week 1, the randomization routine may scatter them over the four weeks of a month. You may have six subs come in, but one in Week 1, 2 in Week 2, one in Week 3 and two in Week 4, or any combination that results. Can you do this within your VASSAL module, or does the player handle that outside the module and manually introduce the subs himself in the various weeks they arrive? Thanks.

All the cards should be available in the players hands on the pre-defined set ups. I wasn't allowed to put all the setups in per the game company. Not sure if that scenario made the cut or not! Can't remember!
@@Teufelhunde87 That’s too bad…I own the game and want to play the It’s All my Fault scenario via Vassal…bummer.
@@wartable you can set it up from scratch, all the cards are either in the hand or in the unit charts. Everything is there, just not preset.
@@Teufelhunde87 Great!…is there a scenario that has all the cards? Or they all do?
@@wartable they use different ones. All the cards are there, just put the ones not in use out of the hand. I usually put them outside the border.
@@Teufelhunde87 - thank you for the explanation. I was thinking indeed that you would be provided with easy to integrate files by designers or publishers when creating modules for them or play-testing their products, which makes full sense.
Would love to see the rest of the season if you're still interested. I love FAR.
I have to put it back up again! Got busy making modules, moving etc! Love this game!
@Teufelhunde87 Love to hear it! And hey, life gets busy, and sometimes we can't help what our brains hyperfixate on haha. Sometimes you just gotta play the game that gives the dopamine. 😄 Thanks for the uploads!
I am very thankful for the series of videos on that game. That convinced me to buy it… and play on Vassal as you do. While at it I also consider doing the same for the WWI game Aces of Valor.
I like the Berserker games Aces of Valor better than the one released by Legion Games. More of a challenge!
I wish you a whole lot of enjoyment.
How can obtain a copy of this spreadsheet?
Hope you’re doing well sir. Good to see the Combat rolling. Ridge assaults with wire and trenches can get dicey as they should be lol.
Doing ok! Thanks! Made it through Valentines Day! I love the ridge assaults. It is a matter of "can I get a foothold?". I'm hoping to get my campaign rolling more again, no module making scheduled, but I did pick up the Panzer series and finished my MBT series. I was good to myself this week!
I have an issue and I'm sure you'll have the answer. When playing a mission I shot rifle grenades and it left smoke. Now during the course of the turn the smoke is supposed to lessen and move with the wind, but once you set it on the board you can't move it if it is places on a foxhole. How do i unlock this?
All terrain counters need to hold shift key and select. So they don't move with stacks easily.
Thank you I must have missed that part of your play throughs.@@Teufelhunde87
@@timothyfreed5748 you can see me hold the shift key!!;😂🤣 That is a common VASSAL feature when you don't want markers being dragged around or selected with others. It's a great tool!
Glad to see you back again. All that Vassal work has been keeping you busy.
Maybe too much making modules!!!
Those are the sub menu items for each chart. Should close automatically. Make sure your running the current VASSAL version and maybe reinstall the module. No one has had that issue before.
Thanks Greg for doing this. I do a lot of stuff on VASSAL and this will be a great addition.
Thanks! I do most my stuff on VASSAL too! Hope these help!
Thank you. I guess the only issue I still have is the charts. It's not that they are missing but they are listed UNDER the tool bar and there is no X to remove them. They are there and not sure how to get rid of them. I went into the edit feature in the module and saw that they are listed as a tool bar item and looked to see how to get them off the screen, but there is no click box I can find to get rid of them. I could send you a screen shot to let you know what I am talking about.
@@timothyfreed5748 There is an X on every window in VASSAL. drag the window around, resize it, until you see the x.
These arent windows. They are like access bars below the tool bar. It's okay I'll live with it. Not sure how to explain it except to send a screen shot.
I have been trying to play the first mission of my campaign and i cannot get my counters to unstack like you do. I have to delete the order counter to give the unit counter an order. I have Combat 3.1 and all the extensions, but the stack stays locked. Also you took the weapons chart off the main game screen. Is there a reason for this? I love the game just a few things have changed and disappeared from the version 1.1. I have been watching your videos for this but it really isn't saying how to make these work like you show on your game. What can I do.
I'm also wondering why I have all the charts on the front screen that is also in the drop down menu. Is there a way to take those out as well? I have a screen shot I can send you to show you what I mean. The weapons chart does not even show up on the game.
@@timothyfreed5748 A lot of this is the basic VASSAL interface. If you open a chart, you have to close it or move it when you are done with it. I slide mine to my second screen or close them when I am done with them. You can close them by hitting the X in the top right of the chart window.
Okay thank you. I didnt see the close x. How do I bring back the weapons charts. Those are not on the screen. I went into the setup screen and saw where it is listed but it's not showing on the screen when I drop down the menu.
@@timothyfreed5748 they may not be in the module, Compass restricts the amount of charts to use, the original author used a lot of them. If they aren't in the charts menu they aren't there. I added them to mine to aidy recordings, but can't distribute those.
Nicely done, Greg.
Thank you sir!
You are most welcome, young man. 😁@@Teufelhunde87
Hey Greg 😊
Hey Erich!
thanks for doing this.... it is awesome stuff and glad you can show people how to use it...
Thanks Jester! Looks like another great game from Greg Smith!
Yay, another game from Compass that I'm really looking forward to!
Hi Greg, I have a question about increasing the players side. Making a second Soviet player and Germany player in a module. I can't seem to get it to fully work. Seems to act more like an observer player.
That comes down to definition of player sides and assigning sides to markers, decks, etc. you need to make sure that sides are assigned to everything you want that player to control.
Thanks so much for the reply. The Third Winter was created with one German and one Soviet player along with a solo. I created another German and Soviet player. They seem to work with everything except when I add the new players to the private windows so that player can mask units. They can't mask or see masked units.
Thanks Greg. Another game that I've been waiting for.
Nice work as always. I’m looking forward to this game.
I'm planning on starting the Long Campaign tomorrow, using your module, Greg. I left a link to this video on the SW2/IJN2 forum on Board Game Geek. I'm hoping to drum up support for your module.
Thanks! I hope to start one up soon, but I am working on Atlantic Sentinels now(Official) so I will have to wait a little longer.
Overall, I am really enjoying this module. It speeds up my game play and I don't have to worry about my game getting liquids spilled on it or a cat jumping on the table and playing ping pong with the game pieces.
Sounds like a VASSAL issue, the log is straightforward. I'll remove it when I get time. Can't invest much more time in this module, it was just meant to be an alternative to the official module. It has become anything but that.
@@Teufelhunde87 I m sorry to hear that, Greg, but at the same time I know from viewing all of your videos that this module has been a great demand on your time. I appreciate all of the work you have done. I've not even looked at that other module and had no idea it was the official module. I am cherry green to VASSAL and my only experience with it is by playing with your module. It's been a great ride. I really enjoy that my cardboard pieces are not sustaining wear and tear. Occasionally I have had to glue back down a corner as it started to delaminate.
@@randolphstead2988 I was doing the same, the counters were coming apart. Haven't had time to actually play since.
@@Teufelhunde87 Hey Greg, I have been thinking that it would be a shame if you removed the kill log function, even thought it may seem a bit wonky. I just had a double kill log show up. The second one was kind of ghostly and was for a different sub. When I clicked on the X it went away and I was still able to input my most recent kill for the correct sub. It's up to you, of course as it is your module. This is not the type of thing that breaks a game, but I will be happy to go with whichever choice you make. Have a great day, and please, get to some gaming and enjoy this beautiful module you have created. I downloaded the other module to have a look at it. I did not like it at first impression and removed it.
@@randolphstead2988 make sure you only have one sub selected. If you click a stack without expanding it, it will perform the command for all of them
Hi Greg, I've been using the module to play SW and it is a great experience, speeding up the game and making tracking easier. Thanks.
You can adjust the tonnage log by selecting "Set Tonnage" and enter the adjusted amount.
@@Teufelhunde87 Greg, I just tinkered with the tracking markers and now I know how to set them. I did not know that could be done. Thanks!
I really enjoyed the game, but you kept putting low on ammo on the guy being shot instead of the shooter.
In the absence of a way to indicate the "to hit roll: beside each target I am doing that the same way as I do when playing the board game: I use d10s to indicate the "to hit" number and lay the dice out on paper combat table.
The counters should all go off when the subs go to the broom box or the repair hold box in the Port menu. I will double check tomorrow to make sure that didn't get lost somehow. VASSAL can be like dominos sometimes when you change something.
@@Teufelhunde87 I have not been doing anything at all with the port menu, just dumping the subs straight into the broom box or repair box. Perhaps that's why they are not dropping off automatically. I have shut down my computer and heading to bed now. I've been awake for about 28 hours and am dozing off. I will watch again your "Take 5" video and perhaps I will pick up a vital detail. Good night, Captain.
@@randolphstead2988 Yes, there are a lot of menus that pop up. Some are only visible when you are where you can use them. Right click the counters a lot!
@@Teufelhunde87As I am watching your video again I realize it is my error, not a flaw in your coding. I should drop the subs in the port box, then use the port menu to direct them to repair or broombox. To quote Homer J. Simpson: "D'oh!" Goodnight, Greg.
Hi Greg. Me again. I've been making my way through your videos and I see you now have the IJN ships in your module. I visited the VASSAL website on my phone and I see a SW 2.0-IJN available for download. Are you the author of that module? I have not yet downloaded it on my home PC, but I am hoping you are the author, as I now feel a sense of loyalty to you. I've never used VASSAL but plan to try it when my current Desperate Pearl campaign is completed.
Yes, not perfect but it makes playing the game much easier!
Make sure you get my module, there are 2.
@@Teufelhunde87 Ah, I see it now. I had to scroll sideways on my phone. I will make sure I use yours. Thanks again, for your labour of love.
I am not going into coding all the availability dates for IJN ships. The way I play is if I draw something ineligible, I return it and draw again. I just don't have the time to go in and code everything variable in this game.
Thanks.
@@randolphstead2988 I have all the US subs separated by entry date on the sub sheet, but nothing to automate bringing them out. The player would need to do the stagger entry on their own. I'm sure automation could be added and tied into my turn counter, but I can't invest more time right now.
@@Teufelhunde87 That's alright. This is a tremendous labour of love on your part, and I am sure we are all grateful for your work.
