  Matthew King was such a terrific character in Emmerdale and in my opinion he was without question the best out of all of the kings and it is just such a real shame that he got killed off in Emmerdale as the show has not been the same without him since he got killed off

  I lived in the UK at the time of this episode in 1971. People in those days would wire or re-wire the electric plugs themselves, often connecting them incorrectly. Or the plug pins would be loose and people tried to fix this themselves. Because of the high voltage in the UK, and because of the complicated connections, every year many people would be electrocuted when plugging in plugs, or would die from electric-plug fires. Val was a beloved character on the series. So when Anne Reid, who played Val, decided to leave the show the writers and/or producers decided to write this story line to educate the public on the dangers of using a damaged cord, or manipulating the pins themselves. If my memory is correct, the public was told ahead of time that Val was going to be electrocuted! There was a big article in the TV Times and probably elsewhere. This was done to avoid the audience being surprised and traumatized, and also as a buildup to the importance of staying home for this episode. (No DVRs in those days!)

Pure quality!!!💯💯💯

  This was a deeply unsatisfying climax after a year's worth of storyline. It's over within a minute and Rita doesn't even say anything. Should have been a big dramatic showdown
