Gramophones, record players and phonographs - repairing, building and experimenting with them
Building, fixing, making, experimenting, and just learning about the technology of gramophones, phonographs and record players. Its not all vintage stuff though and I also do related projects on my 3D printer and lathe and also make use of electronics, especially Arduinos to add a modern twist to older technology.
I've been growing the channel for a few years and I'm now publishing a mixture of long form and shorts with new material every week. I'd love to share all my latest videos with you so please subscribe to get the latest. Thanks 👍😀

Thanks for this. I have been trying to find a proper 78 stylus, because mine are very expensive, and I know using a 45 stylus would not only ruin the record, but the stylus as well. I only got one of these players for recording 78's. So I got the one that records straight to USB. Then I can transfer the files to a computer for cleaning.
@TheBudgie29 Glad you enjoyed it. I had to watch this video again to remember what I said in it! 😅. As you say, best not to use a 45rpm type stylus as the shellac 78s could damage it, and this then could damage your vinyl also. Thanks 👍 😀
I’m getting one of those for my birthday
Good stuff but can you start upload new things? I’m just seeing too much on this now and it’s quite repetitive. No offence. Regards, TM.
Yes, there is new content scheduled for tomorrow. I did this one as I realised all my shorts were showing a 45rpm record, and I wanted to do at least one with a 33rpm album. That one, I picked up at the weekend. Thanks
Hard to judge, they all sound different with very different types of dreadfulness.
I'm guessing from your channel you prefer a more modern means of reproduction 🤔
@@mrrgstuff Yes, that's very true. I'm sorry if my comment was a little hard. I appreciate it's a hobby and I'm sure you would agree it's not the highest fidelity. I did find your video interesting. I had a wind-up record player as a kid. I spent many hours playing 78rpm records left to me by relatives. I think from memory it had a rather good sound box and sounded quite nice with long play needles.
@MichaelBeeny Yes, indeed, it certainly is not high fidelity! 😅. I have invested in a modern cartridge but find it is very good at picking up surface noise along with the music: kzread.info/dash/bejne/f4x7xdyxp8-zicY.html More modern records, like this 1930s one I do think, sound pretty good on an acoustic gramophone, however: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eZWfqNR8mJjJmKw.htmlsi=DTCG1Nf3X0a-48pp I am more interested in the machines and the technology than the actual music, though 😉. Thanks
At least it's imperfect enough to avoid KZread copyright ID detection
Actually, I tried recording it on a modern Pro-ject turntable first. Google certainly understands what it is. KZread seems very unfussed. Only once I had determined that did I try it on the gramophone.
Шум мотор редуктора сильно выделяетря на фоне музыки. Интересно, а если в место мотор редуктора поставить безколекторный электродвигатель, например колесо от гироскутера или от подобной техники.
Yes, gear noise is a problem. There are other technical solutions I may try to improve the situation. I also usually place the microphone near the end of the horn, but didn't in this case. Thanks 👍 😀
@@user-eg2ng8gk9f Yes, that's a good idea. I would like to try some sort of compressed air drive at some point. Thanks 👍 😀
Yo that's sick, I've been trying to do something like that for a while. By the way, what record is that? I think I might try to find it off of eBay.
@Sup3rFluxYT It's "Canadian Capers", by Harry Roy and his Orchestra. You might like this one too: kzread.infoIDY8vaHCAtw?feature=share Thanks 👍 😀
@@mrrgstuff Thank you too. That stuff is very interesting to me.
@Sup3rFluxYT This one is quite old, but good to watch if you are looking to build something: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fId_k7irhainZ84.html
@@mrrgstuff Sweet, thank you so much I've been looking for something like that for a while now.
hey i have a question: i have a hmv 103 myself and the main spindle gear is broken, do you happen to know anywhere i can get one of these? its the same one as there is in this one (its a 426 motor)
Unfortunately, not. It might be worth you joing "The Talking Machine Forum", as there is a section on there where people buy and sell stuff. Good luck 👍
I wonder if adding more mass to the turntable would improve the wow/flutter? That HMV 130 uses a 3 spring motor which should have plenty of torque for the job when it’s fully wound
@bigcheeses It's a good question. The turntable is already quite heavy, though it would cope with more weight. The motor should be a 2 spring HMV type 32 motor, but it's a little more complicated than that! 😅 Did you see this video, as it explains: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aISWqsh6p5mwp9I.html Thanks 👍 😀
Time is very precious. Please don't waste your precious time.
Ita all fun until you hear "Start Remembering What You Hear"
This process is not cleaning. It's just wax. You should wash with water and soap if found record was dirty.
@vinylman1973return It was just an experiment, and I am not claiming it is a good or effective way to clean a shellac record. However, I don't believe this hand cleaner is wax. It does clean as dirt is clearly removed. I will try soap and water in a future video, though I know lots of people do use that. Thanks
How do you think that I should buy a fake gramophone because it is the only thing that I get in Lebanon😅
I can't really advise on how to buy one. Whether it is worth getting one depends on what you intend to use it for. They usually can be made to play, but they are not suitable as everyday players for your 78 collection. Even after quite a bit of adjustment, they are still very rough on the records and don't sound that good. Hope that helps.
Well I intend using it to listen to music
Thank you for the advice I will keep it in mind when I go to buy my first record player
And also your videos are amazing I love them
These fakes machines can be a lot of fun, but they are not sold to actually play records, though they usually will. Have you seen the playlist of the improvements I have made?: kzread.info/head/PLsCYUbO6xxnSQxENr28Cg05DiRuC5O47w&si=CBaUTnGZN_IUFDf_ One problem I have not yet properly dealt with is that they tend to play too fast. Good luck. Thanks 👍 😀
Nice and imaginative machine. You are the best 👏👏👏
@@microbi46 That is very kind of you to say! Thanks 👍 😀
Imaginative & fun! Reminds me of an early Berliner hand cranked gramophone, brought up to date with reliable speed control, but retaining an acoustic sound. Speaking of which, is this an electrically recorded Little Marvel? Gut feeling is this would make any electric record sound acoustic. Would like to hear it playing those electric music hall revival records, hoping it would give them an old timey sound.
Thanks 👍 😀. I do have quite a selection of smaller records I can play on this, so there will be more. I don't know about this specific record. I haven't been able to find a date for it.
What function does the electronics do in that setup ?
@@Toms3200 There are 2 circuits in there. One ensures the record speed is constant. The other provides a guide for cranking speed. More details can be found in these videos: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iJdsms9plqevZag.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/m2uhlaNqYNTOqLw.html Thanks 👍 😀
"Start remembering what you hear"💀
Interesting device, reminds me of those delightful steampunk contraptions that I've seen on the internet. Well done.
@neilgoloy3582 Thanks 😀👍. Glad you enjoyed it!
That's soo cool! Thanks for that, enjoyed watching. Can't tell you the amount of times I've forgot the needle playing a track. It's worse when it's up loud and it has a label or something in the runout groove. Wwhhhsssss uggghh quick 😂 Cheers!
Thanks 👍 😀
Cool!
@@NippersLounge Thanks 😀👍
@@mrrgstuff you’re welcome
😂😂😂 this is great! The whine is killing me though 😂😂
Thanks 👍 😀. Yes, the motor/gearbox noise is annoying! 😅. Have you seen this one? kzread.info/dash/bejne/d4aawcuieq3Nmco.htmlsi=bsaA7c5Ye9k3pdwZ 😀
Vraiment cool cette petite machine, heureusement que c'est pas un disque de 30 cm 😂, sinon votre bras ce décroche, non je rigole, très ingénieux j'adore 👍
Thanks 👍 😀. Glad you enjoyed it. It is not too hard to wind, but yes, a 30cm record would be more tiring! 😅
Wow your garden is lovely I am really digging the dead plants cemetery look it so halloweeny
Cool record and nice phonograph cool Idea that it runs in Human energy 😊
Glad you liked it. You might enjoy this video too: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iJdsms9plqevZag.htmlsi=5EaX7FOxbSi5gVtJ Thanks 👍 😀
I am more interested in the record
Which one, the 45rpm or 33rpm one? I've posted details of the former on my community tab. Thanks 👍 😀
At first glance I thought that was an ice-cream wafer laying on top 🤣👍
😅 Thanks 👍 😀

Can the 'victor program transcription records' be played this gramophone?
I'm sorry, I don't know. I have never seen one of those records, and I don't know anything about them.
Another quality tune released by Imperial Records. Class.
Thanks 👍 😀
Nice Record, You don't get any copyright issues right ? Cool video
@vogelfranzi5315 This record seems to avoid any copyright issues, but that of course could change any day. Thanks 👍 😀
This is what ive been doing for years
