Because back in the 80’s, guns were seen as this big ol’ scary thing that’s “the evilest thing in the universe”. Megatron is considered the big bad of the Transformers universe; has been since G1 started. So that’s why he’s a gun.

All the pistol Megatrons had some pretty unique approaches when dealing with the transformation of the arms, but a majority of them use similar techniques when dealing with the legs by turning them into the grip.

In my honest opinion, the OG alt mode was the best out of all of them. Others may have been more complex in terms of look and transformation, but the fact that Megatron could vary the size of his pistol to fit the intended user or use is beyond what any other Transformers continuity has for his alt mode.
