I think it is highly probable that both pearls belonged to pink. The pearl with cracks in her face being Earth's Pearl predecessor.
i think its also worth adding that some gems, especially those on home world, might have assumed that rose was an off color because it aligned with homeworld's whole philosophy that off color gems were problem makers that needed to be dealt with. also with regard to her powers, i think on homeworld's side of things, any claims that would have reached the diamonds (who never saw the battlefield for themselves) would have been disregarded as rebel propaganda and similarly within the rebellion the vast majority of members would not have interacted with rose at length so differences in power would have went unnoticed and anything they did know about would have fit into the narrative that rose is this almost saint like figure with special abilities; whether or not these stories would have been taken entirely literally or if they were given a more folkloric quality is also possible. Many gems might have been entirely unaware of what rose quartzes could even do since they were decommissioned at some point not to mention that unless a gems purpose involved knowing the classifications of gems they might not know the details of different gem types power just in general.

The first episode is left on a cliffhanger where everyone is cheering Kid Cosmic’s victory and they’re all happy, except for Papa G. He seems confused, unsure, skeptical

Hrm... Okay. I used to believe the Pearl Swap theory, but now I like the Pearl Replacement idea pretty nicely. It's all based on what we can infer about gem culture, but let's presume that Pearls are either 1. Created by Diamonds, directly, as their personal servants 2. Created in a Kindergarten, but assigned to individual Diamonds (and color-coded appropriately) So, what could these two things mean for this theory? Depends based on which version we go with: 1. By being directly created, the Diamonds can control aspects of their formation, leading them to have different configurations/colorings. And the Diamonds being vain, Blue Yellow and Pink each made their Pearls in their own image. They matched color and gem location because that's what the Diamond willed into creation. With Pink's replacement Pearl being made by White, herself, for Pink. White would have the power to bestow such an ability, I would think, and would be able to access more of the spectrums of light (allowing our Pearl to have multi-colored outfits, whereas most gems have monotone outfits, matching their gem colors) 2. Alternatively if they come from a Kindergarten, as per normal, it could just be that they were separated by coloration, like we do with real gems. Like, how in real life, rubies and sapphires are technically both just corundum, just reacting with different stuff. However, the fact that it's an ability specific to Pearl/Pink, and not seen in any of the other Diamonds and their gems, idk how that may have come about. . . Perhaps it was White manipulating her mind, but we can't really say for certain, in this version, because the Diamonds would have a lot less direct control over Pearl's creation.

I'm definitely on the "They recognized her, but could not Possibly Imagine Pink would hide like that (Also she was dead) so they just brushed it off as an Amazingly Similar looking gem..." but my issue is that if they immediately recognize "Who" a gem is, they 'should' have also recognized "What" her gem was, so that would have blown her cover.

my theory is that white never had a pearl, pink pearl used to be pink diamonds pearl and was swapped out for a ‘more sensible pearl’ because she believed pink pearl was a bad influence on pink diamond. pearl was made specifically for pink diamond, but was made to be more like white diamond so she could balance out pink’s chaotic personality. and i think the reason why white diamond kept pink pearl is simply to enact a weird punishment on her. why else would white diamond need a pearl, especially one as cutesy and fun as pink pearl, other than to puppet around a gem who stepped out of line.

Imagine you were just some avaerage gem, and you manage to spot the difference, what exactly are you going to do with that information? You gonna run up to the authorities and accuse what to most people is just an above average rose quartz is actually Pink Diamond? That prospect gets even worse after the staged shattering. It would be like if I was walking down the street one day walked past an old woman and happened to notice it was Queen victoria in disguise, like, what do I do with that? And think about it from the POV of the gem who noticed, what is she going to think? That this highly unlikely, borderline impossible thing is happening, or that she's simply mistaken.
Nothing in this world will ever make me believe that our pearl was made for pink…. There are only 4 pearls in the whole show and each one has a gem placement corresponding to their respective diamond… if our pearl was “made” for pink, why wasn’t her gem placed on her stomach? I will always believe tiara she was originally made for white diamond but was deemed “defective” because of her colors.. same as how pink was deemed defective because of her size.
The only thing that confuses me is why would white diemond choose to take volleyball as her pealr? Like she's pink diamonds old pearl and her eye is messed up badly, it doesn't make any sense why white diamond would choose to have such a inperfect pearl as her own since she was super obsessed with everything being perfect
I still think 'where's white diamond's pearl?' is unresolved, the pearls aren't _just_ for feeling superior to, they're very useful assistants. I mean, she uses Volleyball that way, why wouldn't she have a pearl before?
They shouldn't be able to tell by the color. The color is from impurities in the gem, and diamond and quartz both have a wide variety of colors. They should have been able to tell by the index of refraction. Quartz has an index of refraction of 1.55 and diamond has an index of refraction of 2.42.
Pink had her own that was taken by white and our pearl is a "gift" from white but she's basic and default which white sees as bad but pink sees as a blank slate to be molded into whatever pearl wants to be herself
I think it’s because nobody was looking for those differences. Why would they? Unless there was some indication that Pink Diamond had hidden herself as a Quartz, nobody would look for the evidence. Anyone who’d point it out would be considered a conspiracy theorist (at best).

The pearl swap theory is honestly not for discussion unless you want it as a headcannon. Pearl was never white’s and specifically made for pink. However, the creation of pearls are indeed connected to white diamond. White diamond created the reef on her 5th colony (as said by one of the makers). So it makes sense as to why pearls default design has her gem in her forehead. If she was customized, her gem would be place elsewhere and look more like pink. Our pearl’s design is the default. So she’s gonna represent white originally.
I think they did swap, maybe because pink diamond felt so bad for pink pearl when she did that to her eye so she wanted to swap. When pink diamond got her colony she and pearl didn’t get along that well, pearl looked more shy, even though they should’ve known each for a long time. In the movie the title says 3.0 if you think about it the first time was when she was created and shown to white, then she swapped and shown to pink and then to Greg which is the third time. And that she could only take an order like that from her diamond is true, but she totally forgot her past which makes pink her first diamond. Steven’s flashback also shows volleyball with pink diamond and they look like they’re getting really along and know each other. She wanted her colony which, but didn’t get on then she hurt volleyball (pink pearl), then when she has her colony we see only OG pearl so I guess after she hurt volleyball she and white switched.

i always just assumed that a diamond's shapeshifting abilities were far superior to normal gems and even translated into their gems, that's the easiest explanation not only that, we can also assume that pink diamond is in some way related to spinels who can manipulate their body beyond what most gems can, maybe pink even learned a few tricks from her own spinel
I only came to this vid after watching the episode in SU Future where pink pearl remarks that she’s older than pearl. I have a theory that this could mean one of two things: - Our Pearl was created after the original Pink Pearl. This highly supports the idea that the pearls were never swapped to begin with and that our Pearl was truly created only for Pink after the incident with Pink Pearl. - Our Pearl was rejuvenated and actually swapped with Pink Pearl. Think of it this way - when the gems rejuvenated, they had no recollection of their former selves. It’s quite possible that when a gem is rejuvenated, their age also resets. It’s quite possible that Pink Pearl knew our Pearl was rejuvenated and therefore “younger” than her even though they may actually be the same age. (I believe that Pink Pearl was never rejuvenated, hence her abilities to recall her memories of Pink. It’s quite possible that Pearl might’ve suffered the same treatment as Pink Pearl - complete mind control - if she was ever owned by white and possibly rejuvenated for absolutely no reason other than to reset her for pink). Rejuvenation could also explain the customization of pearls outfit for pink while still retaining features that specifically make her look like a white Pearl and as another comment pointed out, could explain the “3” mentioned when Pearl rejuvenated during the movie. Personally, based on the video, comments from the crewniverse, and the way the line was worded in the episode, I highly believe the first of my two theories is probably correct. (Which leaves the question of why white diamond would never have a Pearl until taking Pinks Pearl).
Gonna state the obvious, they're the Power Rangers, and still have their sense of teamwork and selflessness, but with the important detail that the Rangers were always a defensive unit, and their battles were more often than not against enemies who'd already identified as hostile and had made their intentions clear to conquer Earth, or "cleanse" it. And EVEN THEN they'd have episodes of monsters of the week showing more free will than their masters were comfortable with (more so in the Japanese version, most of the characters were turned into fake-defectors in Rangers).
Frankly just from what Sugar said, Pink Diamond's gem stopped being "Pink Diamond" because Pink Diamond herself no longer saw herself as Pink Diamond. She wanted to be a Rose Quartz and the gem responded to that wish. And when she "died" to give birth to Steven, the gem stopped being "Pink Diamond's Gem" complete and became Steven Universe. We saw that when White Diamond forcefully took the gem out of Steven. It cycled through the Pink Diamond and Rose Quartz identity but ultimately it knew it was Steven Universe. That's why Pink Steven exists. The gem itself "shape-shifted" and that's why no one could identify it. It didn't show signs of change, but it clearly DID change.
I think there was a pearl swap, and a part of the SU movie points to this being a possibility. After Spinel rejuvenates the Crystal Gems, and Pearl reforms, she sings "system/BOOT.pearlfinal(3).info". The three in the parenthesis would not be there if Pearl had not been rejuvenated previously, and instead the song would have been "system/BOOT.pearlfinal(2).info". Unlike the other diamonds, White didn't seem to have any use for a pearl, so it makes sense that White would just factory reset her pearl and give her to Pink after Volleyball was damaged.
2:46 This ironically shows what they say abut square pegs in round holes. Lots of fans were TICKED OFF at Act of God the comic story, where the heroes lose their powers, act like a buncha brats with their toys taken away (except Captain Marvel ironically), until Batman 'shows them the light.' It didn't READ like a DC Superhero comic! Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman, isn't supposed to be Watchmen, it's not supposed to be The Boys, it's not supposed to be Invincible ... I ironically didn't mind a battle with the Biker in Black here... it showed that he was old news, that the heroes has grown beyond him.
Tbh its kinda like if a person was somehow able to change their height. Thats not something you can properly fake, especiaply if the taller guy had nothing hiding what could potentially be some sort of extension to make him look taller. Its possible to make disguises to a face that look quite real, to put on a wig that also looks like real mop of hair connected to your head, you can use contact lenses to make your irises look a different colour, you can even paint your skin if needed, all to make yourself look different, but one thing you can’t fake and make it believable past any proper inspection is height. With gems, their bodies can be completely altered by simple shapeshifting aside from their colour, tho that can prolly be faked in other ways that gems likely wouldn’t know about, and the shape of their gem. If the gem is destroyed, they are destroyed, its the one thing about their body that can’t be faked through shapeshifting. If she hid her gem somehow then her identity might get called into question, because it would be odd that a gem’s gem is always hidden from sight, but her’s was where everyone in front of her could see it, clearly looking like a rose quartz. Nobody would think that a tall guy with shorts on and a short guy with pants on were the same person, and for the gems, the shapes visible for the diamond and rose quartz just seemed too different to be the same
there is another caracter that can order pearl, GREG. it is possible (and want i belive to be troue) that pearl was originaly with's. But when pink damage Volley Ball pearl was rejuvinated to serv pink as a brend new pearl and voley was taken by whith

“we can’t look to the show for clarity” we can. pearl was obsessed with rose, in all flashbacks we see of her, even moreso. it wasn’t because of rose leading the gems like the others it was, stalker -esc. pearl didn’t really see rose for who rose was, only what she dreamed her to be. that obsession never went to the next leader of the crystal gems, it didn’t go to steven, it lived and died with her diamond. it was designed. and not only is this blatantly spelled out in the movie, but there are numerous hints that make sense with how she talks about her. even as she started getting more romantic involvement, she never got the same dutiful unhealthy obsession she had with pink diamond or rose. sources, when she started trining connie, any flashbacks where she sparred against greg, the musical episode mr greg, steven universe future the movie, the episode we learn rose and pink are the same person. pearl was made for rose.
If ranked Xhan by her leader ship it would be very low due to her bad advice of being a leader. I would put Leonardo and Robin above her and definitely Optimus prime 100%.
Shouldn't her power to create life have been very suspicious to the other Crystal Gems? I think thats a pretty big plothole.
Maybe it is suspicious that a quartz is so powerful, but the powers had no relation to Pink Diamond, Pink had destructive powers, when she became good she discovered her healing powers, something that neither she nor any other gem knew, and I think that just as Jasper was stronger than her sisters, they thought that Rose was the strongest quartz (something that authority wouldn’t admit).
Im pretty sure what happened , that when pink diamond started complaining, and throwing tantrums to have her own colony that white started threatening pink diamond she will take her pearl if she doesn't behave, Im pretty sure she did something bad so white too her pink pearl and gave her a new pearl more intelligent, representing white diamond more and that is our pearl

I think... It's probably something they planned and then changed several times during development. I do imagine at some point she was White's pearl. There was too much evidence at many points that she was. Then they changed. Happens.
They play it off like Rose didn't have a plan and it was just serendipity that Pearl suggested they explore. I believe it was stated that Pink diamond was responsible for the development of the rose quarts. I'm not sure of the timeline but it sure seems like that all was going according to plan. Pink is small for a diamond but Rose quarts are rather large for most gems.
My theory was always that Pearl had served Pink Diamond. Then, as the show went on, when Zircon suggested that only someone like a pearl could have gotten close enough to shatter Pink Diamond, I took that as confirmation both that Pearl had served Pink Diamond, and that the secret Pearl was keeping was that she had been the one to shatter Pink Diamond, rather than it having been Rose Quartz. Of course, only one of those things happened to be true lol.

To me it makes sense that nobody knew because it was a long time ago and they believed Pink was dead. It would be like seeing a childhood friend that you thought passed away but didn’t, you probably wouldn’t recognize them in person even if they had distinguishable features, as well as you would think of it as a coincidence as it couldn’t possibly be your friend that you believed passed.
I always figured that our Pearl was originally intended for White Diamond, but she was left in the backburner because she didn't actually need or wanted a pearl. Then Pink Diamond damaged her own pearl so she was given our Pearl based after White Diamond's image. The other Pearls match their Diamond's personality, and our Pearl's neurotic and controling nature seem to mostly match White Diamond.

my response to folks saying 'why did she take pink's pearl then if she didn't have a pearl before?' is simple Parental Emotional Abuse. losing her pearl was a punishment. white diamond would absolutely parade her around simply to rub it in and Make Pink Learn Her Lesson. white diamond wanted her to know that she was being punished. for the record im slightly skeptical about the line of argument that pearl is only pink's because pearl is the only gem that can be commanded by pink. it seems garnet was commanded by pink to not ask questions and the only times she breaks that rule are when the crew admitted to making a mistake. but i definitely agree that pearl was made for pink. my interpretation of the (3) in the movie is one i haven't seen here -- i assumed the diamonds did a beta version to make sure she was made with the right personality to "guide" pink. then when they were satisfied they reformed her, maybe to give the illusion that they hadn't been messing around with pearl's programming prior to giving her to pink.
