It says uchidachi is Hongu Toranosuke and shidachi Hayashi Yazaemon. Does that mean Hongu was more senior to Hayashi? The one on the right side is Hongu and Hayashi is on the left, correct?

Not sure who was more senior, but they came from the same generation, so there were probably not many differences in regard to seniority.

It looks simple, but it is a very difficult technique. Too much force will slow down the swing speed.

This style of swordsmanship was the most feared in Japan at the end of the Edo period as the most insane swordsmanship. There are no defensive techniques in their style.

To get a sense of how terrifying Jigen Ryu is, next time you spar with someone, change the rules so that doubles count as a win for your opponent and they have zero self preservation… Now imagine someone who constantly fights with that mentality…

Utterly magnificent. This style uses the truth of combat as a weapon. Despite your training in the dojo, despite sparring, you WILL be afraid, and the Jigen Swordsmen cares for nothing but cutting you down. Fear is the greatest weapon.

yes every man in the street carries a katana sword and a few nunchakas as well as a few ninja stars - just in case some drunken lout gets abusive while out drinking at the local pub. I'm sure the ninjas and sumurai warriors of old would have just carried a 9mm today - their aim was to destroy an opponent and defend their turf. I don't think Japan attacked and pillaged China, Korea and Philippines using swords!

I notice only now that in the name of the school, the "to" part is written 刀 and not 道 as it is usually done nowadays. According to Sugino Y. and Otake R., there were discussions about changing the name of the school in those years so it's not that surprising.

Ever did that in a real situation against someone who puts on real resistance? I have. I once threw a guy who came at me in a bar. He spilled bear on my gf and when I confronted him he spilled bear on me. I pushed him. The guy literally backed to the other end of the bar and then started rushing at me. His hands were extended so to say, grab me. It was like he was handing it out for me. The opportunity was there and I just grabbed his wrist and twisted it. Whoops! Did a kotegaeshi. Man! It worked! I don't know if the stooge had done some training in aikido, but in any case, he fell on to the ground. Then I proceeded to secure him but some other guy jumped in and kicked the downed guy in the head. That was not right. Luckily the kicked guy was ok afterwards. But man, the kotegeashi...I'm telling you, it worked. That time against that guy, at least. Of course we were all a little bit drunk, but anyways, I felt like I was some sort of Steven Seagal or something. Fighting in a bar. I even remember seeing briefly a girl looking admirably at me doing my business. I'm telling you I even had a little ponytail back then! LMAO! 🤣🤣🤣

To answer your question, you must understand Jigen Ryu's philosophy. To the ryu, the best and only strategy is to attack and attack with sheer berzerker like ferocity with total disregard for your own life. If I die in the attempt, so be it. But I must destroy my enemy in the process as well. This is Jigen Ryu's approach to combat and why their swordsmen were so feared.

if you think it's a joke look at the wooden posts they're hitting with their wood swords. you don't wear down a solid wood beam like that with weak swings. these guys were scary back in the days when fights were still going on. a single cut from a jigen ryu fellow would probably chop off your limb. contrary to what you see in movies, normal samurai cuts wouldn't even make it through the bones in your hand. these guys wielded katana like meat cleavers and destroyed everything they touched. probably one of the strongest sword schools in japan.

It's Daitoryu Aikijijutsu, idori and hanzahandachi forms of first, ikajo, and second sequence, nikajo. Like idori forms of Yagiu Ryu, but with different names. Both Yagiu ryu and Daitoryu are "aiki" jujutsu tecniques. For example the same side-throw tecnique is named "hanminage" in Dairoryu and "yokotorinage" in Yagiu ryu.
