    Hi Carl, Thanks for the video. That's a cumbersome way to make it happen. It would be much better to imbed a video player with some control options... now we also have Pipewire which suppose to replace jack... Adding the ability to use VST in Musescore on Linux is also needed. I want to use have more control on the reverb and I cant. Also, the strings harmonics... They using the wrong symbol for that. The circle is for open strings harmonics but not for the artificial harmonics. This will confuse players. Apart of that, when thinking about it, the film composers of the golden area had only pencil and paper. They did much better music that tells the story. They really had control on music.

    @laylasmart We now have a MuseScore 4 pull request release that gives direct sync between M4 and any video player or DAW that is Jack capable. As for harmonics symbols, M4 has visibility and character assignment that allows anyone to use the characters of their choosing and call upon the appropriate Muse Sound.

  • @laylasmart

    @@carlirwinmusic Harmonics symbols. I wouldn't know how to change the symbol appearance and how to make it function as is suppose to be. Artificial harmonics are marked forth above the written note with a shape of a diamond. Also, is it possible to make both open and artificial harmonic symbols work differently? Any video tutorial about that? Pull request - That means that we will always be depended on the abilities of an external software and it's options, and we will also loose system resources to make an external software to work. Not everyone have an high-end computer with dedicated screen card, tones of ram and external sound card. An imbedded video player within Musescore will be a wiser way to go. Yes, Jack can still be there if needed just in case, and still, when things work natively, everything become much easier with less hassle. Also, where is the VST options in M4 on Linux? It does not exist. We have tones of free VST sounds and effects for Linux and no way to use them on M4. As for the idea of the pull request itself, it seems like people share their personal experience with M4 and the request they ask, which is fine. However, there are things that are accepted in all over the world of orchestral music. It is not personal need to have a video player imbedded in M4 but something that must be there natively as part of M4 and it is better be a dynamic video player that it's size can be change like changing the size of a folder. I'm no programer, but there are many open source video player the can be imbed within M4 or taking them as an example to create one using AI. github.com/topics/video-player

  • @carlirwinmusic
    @carlirwinmusic16 күн бұрын

    @laylasmart on the issues re: the Jack pull request branch... adding a video player will use more system resources than M4 without a video player. This is unavoidable. However, the Jack build runs perfectly smoothly on a home computer system core i5 with about 8g of ram. I see no reason why M4 shouldn't have an internal video player. I'm not against it. Re: Linux VST function... the Jack pull request provides sync with DAW so the mixing of M4 sounds with external effects, instrumentation and midi is available now.

    A small nit to pick: it may be true that (digital) signal processing is "all math", however it's not true that all algorithms are the same. There are lots of different ways (i.e. algorithms) to do reverb for example, even a specific technique like convolution reverb. Something as simple as an equalizer that cuts or amplifies certain frequencies of a signal can be implemented in different ways. Just because two different plugins have a knob that can raise or lower the amplitude of a certain frequency doesn't mean they are doing the same math (almost certainly they are not), let alone that they will sound the same. Equalizers are essentially bandpass filters, that can have lots of different parameters under control (some of which may have default values hidden from the user for simplicity - what type of filter, windowing, Q, etc.; some of these are controllable in some plugins, some not). This is why Waves plugins, for example, are so popular - they sound good to many people, and the reason they sound good is presumably because of their algorithms. If all equalizer (or delay, reverb, modulation, etc.) plugins sounded the same, the market wouldn't support the hundreds of different ones people pay for on Windows and Mac (and even Linux, I dare say). I think it's more accurate to say that DSP is (mostly) all code, rather than all math. The code includes the math, but there are lots of different ways/algorithms to do the math, or even math that can be done to achieve the same/similar sonic effect. The same code however, will presumably produce the same output (setting aside hardware issues like roundoff error, approximation error, and other finite register effects; hence the "mostly" above), which can presumably be run on a Linux system just as well as on Windows or Mac. Skeptics say you get what you pay for (i.e. pay talented engineers and programmers to create). The flipside is that the free Linux plugins of today surely blow away the proprietary plugins of say, 20 or 30 years ago. When I was in school studying signal processing in the 80's, plugins didn't even exist, let alone DAWs (Fairlight and Synclavier don't count!). I used Personal Composer to record MIDI on a 286 with a couple hardware synths and a cassette deck back then and I was living the dream lol. Perspective is everything.

    @robarth-meltedcheesehomest4012 you can use vst3 plugins in Linux. They have to be Linux vst3 plugins. Usually Linux vst3 plugins also come in LV2, but Ardour Qtractor and the Carla plugin environment can host Linux vst3. The issue is that your favorite Win/Mac vst3 plugins likely don't have Linux vst3 variations available. But this video features the philosophy that Linux users simply don't use Win/Mac exclusive tools because we have our own fully featured tools.

    Hot take: LMMS is not a DAW

  • @carlirwinmusic
    @carlirwinmusic25 күн бұрын

    @LinuxCreative some would say that it is a midi sequencer. But, can it sequence digital audio? Yes. It does essentially everything but record. The creator of Qtractor is adamant that Qtractor is not a DAW but rather IT is a sequencer... in spite of the fact that it does record audio. It seems to me that the criteria is pretty straight forward: Does the application sequence digital audio? Anything beyond that is really one fabricating their own meaning for words. Ultimately, Audacity is a DAW, as is LMMS and even Hydrogen (although we have the term Drum Computer/Sequencer for that type of application as well) albeit with significant differences in purpose and mode. But beyond the point I have made here regarding definitions, I can create identical orchestral mockups in LMMS, Qtractor, and Ardour using the same plugins and audio... so... Some folks may not be aware that LMMS can handle a project like that.

  • @LinuxCreative
    @LinuxCreative25 күн бұрын

    @@carlirwinmusic LMMS is absolutely a neat piece of FOSS, but I would not call anything a DAW if you can't record audio into it. I didn't consider FL Studio a DAW until that feature was added back in the mid 2000's. It must just be my musician criteria. If I can't plug in an instrument or microphone and hit record, that means I need a real DAW to do half the work!

  • @carlirwinmusic
    @carlirwinmusic2 ай бұрын

    That's a textbook V7 - I cadence. I'm not sure that it could be categorized as "harsh". It's about the most stable and motivated resolution that there is in the whole of western music (including all styles).

  • @javiermedina5313
    @javiermedina53132 ай бұрын

    @@carlirwinmusic I think it's the voice conducting the problem in that part. I know what a V7 - I is... I have 20 years studying music and composition. 7th dominant chords are pretty rare in most of modern western cinematic style, especially if there's no preparation of the 7th, here the problem seems to be the voice conducting, not the 7th itself. As someone who uses 7th chords in almost every non-major harmony, IMO I would just get rid of that 7th or change the voice conducting, I know many pro composers, a lot better than me, that would say the same.

  • @carlirwinmusic

    @@javiermedina5313 I'm not terribly interested in starting a subjective argument over the phenomenology of a leaping interval in this context, especially given other striking intervallic features and added note harmonies written into the piece. But I definitely want to tamp down on this talk about 20 years of experience as a possible evidence of correctness. I have over 20 years of experience in music composition, performance and education... and yet I composed the thing this way. That doesn't really mean anything to the discussion. My point is that as "harsh" as harmonies can be (and are, by design, at other times in the piece) this application of a V7 is more like taking a trip down the street than taking a trip to the moon. Non-extended harmonies have always left room for the use of a 7th on a cadential V. A 7th is not like a 'jazz' thing or stylistically unique when applied in this way (it's not a G7... it's a functional V7 - which happens to be rooted in G). Now if this was another functional chord (apart from a secondary dominant or point of cadential modulation)... then I would understand the inquiry. It just seems like an odd, singular criticism. Anyway, thanks for the comment. Glad you enjoyed the piece!

    This is my review of the sounds as classical musician who plays often in orchestra . The strings are really good when they play both the higher and lower register. When there's the violin solo it's still good but it's much more clear that it's a virtual instrument. The woodwinds sound also very realistic. The worst one is the brass section, horns and trumpets in particular. The sound is not realistic nor good in tone. Overall still good when they play accents and fortissimo.

    It's fascinating how experienced, informed people can come to different conclusions over the subjectivity of sounds. As a classically trained brass player with a lot of experience in various brass idioms (symphonic, wind ensemble, quintet, drumcorps, solo work, etc.) I have found the brass samples to be quite stellar, provided that the writing leaves room for breathing and diversity of articulation. I am most concerned about the clarinet and static nature of the piano.

    Privet Carl.. I am Mikhail Rimsky-Korsakov. No relation, I was told. Known as Hans in West! 🙂 I do understand you, and totally agree with you. I do compose music, but rarely because I want to compose as you. As you said, there are no real demand for it unless commissioned which only happened to me once. I am, however, a military band expert, ie I am Director of Music of Military band, and Arranger. I arranged thousands of music as I found that commissions for Wind Ensembles are far more in demand. I even have music in your country's military band's library! My actual point here is that when I compose or rather arrange stuff, I normally have 2 scores...one called "xxxxx (PrintScore).dorico" and "xxxxx(MidiScore).Dorico. (It used to be xxxx(yyy).sib or .mus) Anyway, my PrintScore is for Notation ie Printing my work for ensemble. My MidiScore is like yours. All 'ugly' stuff is notated including midi CC texts, my fp looks just like yours. The purpose of this is that other directors who commissioned a piece wants me to email him/her periodic mp3s of work progress. In the past, mockups from PrintScore gave them wrong impressions on the score, so I, like you, developed idea of the MidiScore to imprint in their minds more realistic sound which also improved their performance as many derectors of bands are quite mediocre conductors and needs so guidance from my mockups! 😬😂 Hope others also start to understand this approach of ours. I must lastly also say that with Dorico Pro, mockups are automatically far more realistic as one have DAW & Notation workflow all in one project. Pricy, I know (for us), but you Western Friends have money for this! ;-) Keep well and keep educating your Muse Community! Mikhail До свидания PS. Be aware that you can use any .sf2 in the Linux build. This means that you could convert sounds from a good sfz library in Polyphone to sf2 and use it natively in M4. This is how I get brass mutes into M4 (as the Muse Sounds doesn't have those samples yet).

    @@laylasmart Good news. I just checked this morning and there is an indication for harmonics in the articulations panel. Applying the circle harmonics figure to a note calls up true harmonics samples for strings.

    Is there an anechoic recorded string library with controllable bow-pressure, bow speed, bow position, vibrato, similar to Audio Modeling strings?

    I don't know of any open-source work like this yet. The closest that you can get to it right now, for free, is the MuseScore 4 play engine and the Muse Sounds sample set. I don't know that the samples are recorded in an absolutely dead space as the lowest reverb settings still imply a real room. But the AI driving the engine is pretty slick with respect to choosing applicable artifacts (bowing and portamento, etc.) given the context of the notation. You don't have finite control over this, apart from choosing to use different dynamics or articulations to call up different samples (which is what I do to dial in mockups). Voice doubling (solos with sections) and contrast panning techniques take the engine and samples even further. The VPO samples are pretty dead (as many of the samples were originally recorded for scientific analysis at the University of Iowa). VPO has mod-wheel crossfading for dynamic velocity, but there are no specific controls for artifact sounds and no AI components.

    Thanks for showcasing the powerful abilities of Virtual Symphonic Orchestra. Excellent demonstration Carl! Did you had to deal with any degree of Negative Latency Compensation for the specific SFZ instrument, or ensemble? I mean especially with Legato patches is there an initial delay which has to be considered? Keep up the excellent work demonstrating the wonderful and FREE world of scoring on Linux platform, with Ardour and fully open-source sampled instruments. :-)

    I have not had any issues with latency on this system. I am running a real-time Linux kernel. All responses are well within limits that can be dealt with through quantization if/when needed.

    Do you have any experience with using Jack on Mac? You will need to investigate Logic's compatibility with Jack Audio Server's synchronized transport. If You can get Logic to sync with Jack, then it should be a simple matter of running the Musescore 4 Jack PR branch and Logic with their respective audio connections set to Jack. From there, you should be able to route the Musescore 4 audio output into a Logic stereo channel for mixing and sync. I know nothing about running Jack on Mac and to what extent Logic interfaces with Jack (if at all).

    @@carlirwinmusic Yes there is a great program called TXL that syncs MTC or SMPTE. kzread.infoaHdGUSUSSf0?si=8bmOYcYB5ZHIGngL Here it is syncing Dorico and Cubase. If we could get Musescore to send/receive MTC, TXL can link Musescore with Logic/Cubase/Ableton etc. They all have built in Video support.
