Well. On that recommendation, it's going on my list. Thanks!
Well done, really enjoyed. This hike has to be on my list. Breakfast for me is oatmeal with vanilla protein powder and some sort of dried fruit. All day energy.
Mmmmmmm that does sound good!
@mattshafter Excellent gear review. If you were doing a long hike, like the PCT, would you use the KS or the framed Omega backpack?
If your gear is super refined you could (and I did) do the KS40 through the sierra, but there's just undoubtably more flexibility with the Omega, better carrying, and no barrelling of the pack from a bear can. If I was doing the entire PCT, I would go with the Omega.
Hey man awesome video and that mold thing inside the pads is a myth!! You can get it in the outside fabrics! And they have a foil like material when heavy use it starts to come off and become transparent and look like mold !! So don’t throw your pads out they’re likely fine!!!
@@danielcamacho2123 Yessss I’ve also been told about the gear skeptic video. But I still want to know why both my pads failed at that time and why Exped says it is mold…. Hrmmmmm
tell me any agrument against playing music on you speaker when its playing just loud enough for you to hear it... and ive never met any hiker blasting music too loud so it can annoy anyone...
Tell you any argument? 1) Your argument is based only on your experience 2) If you're walking in the same direction, you can hear it (even worse it can be indistinct sound) 3) I have 29,000 likes from doing this joke.... There you go. You're welcome.
Matt, great video with some new hacks and changes to your setup from 2021. I’ve been using your pillow setup with a big sky pillow and a exped ul schnozzle pump sack, which doubles as a pack liner and pad pump bag! I was wondering what your thoughts were when deciding to go from the Arc UL to the Katabatic quilt?
Hi. I just wanted to try that pad attachment system and test the two best quilt on the market. Both are great. I would give the slight edge to Katabatic based mostly on the pad system.
This is a really good video. Nice with a different kind of setup than normal. I would love a "How I pack my bag"-video to follow this up. KZread lacks those.
@@Campahoy I have a whole “how to pack your backpack video.” The reason why my list is different is because other KZreadrs are focused on making affiliate brand deals and affiliate links.
@@MattShafter I understand. Ah sorry. I'm new to the channel so I must have missed it in the back catalog. will check it out. Gave me some good ideas. Pulling the trigger on world's most expensive pillow is not something I thought I would do.
After looking up a couple items I see your gear is thousands of dollars. I stopped watching.
@@willjcus Yeh, sounds like it’s not for you. I don’t watch the videos that are like “look at my Ferrari collection” either.
In my neck of the woods we call your quilt a sleeping bag. I have never heard them called quilts. Is that a Canadian thing?
But it has no zipper...I've never seen a "sleeping bag" that doesn't have a zipper. Do I sound Canadian? I'm from Illinois and my accent is Midland. lol
How does the ka 40 compare to hyper mountain gear
Thank you for your honesty in your gear choices! I will be sure to check these out! TY!
You’re welcome!
I did Rae Lakes loop from Bubbs Creek/Glenn Pass in 1960 when I was in HS.. I remember the gruelling switchbacks on Day 1. Wish i could still bacckpack like that. Few hikers and no permit. Thanks for the video.
Woooooooo sounds fun
I bring my German Shepard. She is a wonderful camping/hiking companion. She has a harness with molle pouches on each side and pulls a Burley cart. She helps carry the gear and security.
Hiking buddy!!
Nvm i found it! Youre still my favorite
Thanks!!!
You just might be my favorite person. Newbie here. I hope you answer questions. Is there a list with all this stuff or do I have to go back and watch this again and take notes?
Get the gear and practice several times in your back yard!
The only time I've liked and subscriped to a video upon request.
@@michaelbeary wooooooo
Nice video and suggestions. However, I think, for comparison, it would be useful to include the hiking poles as there are still people hiking without poles, but they are essential for the tent :-)
@@aeuropean1 Yeh, I literally just forgot to include them
bruh you wear fishnet
You scared of something? You get feelings, don’t you? Lol
Wonderful video. Great photography and super explanations. Loved to see the dining places, conditions of living rooms, washrooms etc. Thank you Sir.
@@commonsense5193 you’re welcome
I hike with a Bluetooth speaker. I wish you'd try and slap me.
Amazing vid. I'm taking so many suggestions from this (especially the pillow). I read that the topo pursuit 2 has a narrower toe box than pursuit 1 :/
Thanks!!! Yesssss I tried the 2s and they still work for me but ever so slightly narrower.
I am headed out to do this loop at the end of August. This will be my first solo backpacking trip. I am excited and nervous at the same time.
You can do it!
Excellent presentation. Thank you
Thank you!!
@MattShafter very professiona. I am not experienced at all so thanks for listing all the tips l🙏🪷🕉
Great, vid!
Thanks!!
I'm sorry but the wheight doesnt add up. its much heavier then 3.4 kg.
Lol I literally have a lighterpack link in the description. Let me know when you’ve looked at it.
Love your vlog ❤
Thank you!!
Great video Matt!
Glad you enjoyed it friend!!!! Keep rescuing them park goers!!!!!!!
I feel like this is what Patrick Bateman would sound like if he had taken up camping.
Truth!
I immediately recognized your Katabatic quilt. I too love mine, especially the pad attachment system. Keeps you toasty in the High Sierra.
Toastay!!
Great entertainment …
I went to school for years for this!
Thanks Matt for the excellent video with helpful information, your rationale for your choices and quality video production. A question and a tip to share: 1) What specific options did you get for your KS40 and also for your KS Omega? There's a lot of options on the site. 2) A tip: Agreed having a fabric back to a quilt is very helpful to block drafts, and there's a quick, inexpensive shortcut to turning any regular quilt into a quilt with a back - you can use a 3 oz bivy bag (I think MLD makes one) for cooler and colder weather under your quilt. This way someone who already has a quilt can get the same benefit without having to buy another quilt. And for those willing to DIY or find a seamstress, you can sew a fabric backing to your quilt.
1) KS Ultralight Omega 56L Torso = 53cm Hip Size = 95 to 104cm Pack Body Fabric = Black Ultra 200 Top Front pocket stripe color = Black Ultra 200 Side Pockets = Black 200d Spectra Diamond Ripstop Shoulder Strap = Black 200d Spectra Diamond Ripstop Padded Belt = Black 200d Spectra Diamond Ripstop Bottom Material = 330d Cordura Options 38mm Large Belt option. Sit Pad pockets pair (just like my previous two packs) Strong mesh back pocket 1 Ice Axe Loop left side Lateral Side Cords Load lifters = line loc and cords (if this is not possible, I understand) 20mm sternum strap Dry bag closure with snaps. 4 Bottom loops (option 2) Lycra mesh shoulder pockets (1 open Right, Left zipped.) Bottom Heavy Lycra Mesh Pocket
2) Yes, but a bivy bag doesn't insulate, it only blocks wind. At 35F I want to be insulated. I didn't explain that well.
@@MattShafter So you were referring to an actual sleeping with insulation on the bottom and top, rather than a quilt insulated on top with a fabric draft-blocking back? Timmermade also makes a quilt like I described with a fabric back that isn't insulated.
@@MattShafter It looks like you're referring to a sleeping bag without a hood (and I'm assuming you use your balaclava as the hood).
@@MattShafter Thanks Matt! Do you recall your options for the KS40?
Why wear the net base layer instead of just wearing the sun hoody with nothing underneath?
Hi. Because the mesh shirts that have open holes will let the sweat evaporate away from your skin and pass through your sun hoody. You then are cool and dry.
@@MattShafter do you mean that they create space between you and the hoody?
Amazing video brother!
Glad you liked it!
@@MattShafter ya man it was awesome! I liked the subtitles. I really want to do this loop this fall
The road to the western TH was damaged two winters ago and just reopened on June 10th, 2024. The bridge crossing woods creek was also damaged a few winters back and is still out. Based on reports that it could be forded at risk, I started out on juneteenth. When I arrived at Rae the next day, the Bench Lake ranger was opening up the cabin for the season. There were tons of northbound PCTers, but they wanted to get down to the suspension bridge and beyond. Also, there were not too many JMTers since a critical bridge in kings canyon is still out. PCTers were exiting bishop pass and re-entering via piute pass. Now, the San Joaquin below Evolution can be forded. So anyway, I ended up having Middle Rae all to myself! That was not the case 8 years ago. I used microspikes for part of the climb up to the pass, but they were not really needed. I planned to camp one more night , but hauled out since bubbs creek was so buggy. Was nice to see it again this year and I really enjoyed your video!
Thank you!
1st hiked the loop out of roads end (clockwise) ~8 years ago (aug '16) w/ 3 friends. On day 0, we car camped near grant grove to help acclimatize to the elev. We camped our 1st night in upper paradise and pushed up to Rae the next day for 2 nights. W/ the layover, explored 60 lakes basin. It was beautiful! The 4th night was spent off bubbs creek by the sphynx junction. Had a short 4 mile out the final day. Thanks for the vid!!!
Sounds like a great time!
Did this loop at age 13 and again at 15. Best backpacking trips of my life. Swam in one of the sixty lakes basin lakes with a group of only guys alfresco. Never moved so fast in my life. Saw a Russian satellite burn up reentering the earths atmosphere on one of the nights.Forgot to mention this was in 1966 and I’m 71 now and with bad knees will never be doing anything like this again. Guess that’s why it brings back such pleasant memories. Also forgot that, on the first trip on the last day by Bubbs creek we stopped to eat lunch by the creek on a low sandbar with our backs to the trail. We were finishing up lunch and heard a noise behind us to find a small bear on the raise ground behind us about 10 feet away sniffing our peanut butter poptart lunch. My uncle who was much wiser than a 13 year old said pack up fast and we went around the bear to catch and get down the trail just as momma bear was coming down the trail from up above. Later that afternoon my mischievous cousin who was 9 decided to walk over a log bridge next to the trail and went for a screaming, flying leap of the log when he almost stepped on a coiling rattlesnake. Glad to be back in Kings Canyon parking lot. Many memories of this loop!
Woooooo that sounds fun!
One of my favorite loops. Rae Lakes is a special place. Just stumbled upon your channel. Great vids dude! I’ve been living in TN and WY and watching your Sierra vids has made me want to get out there soon!
Welcome aboard!
What a valuable video and gear list. Many old favorites popped up in your list! Well done sir! Subbed
Thanks for the sub!
Man this is absolute wealth of knowledge!!
Thanks!
This is absolutely stunning!! Are permits hard to come by?
Yes. But I talk in the video that walk up permits can work.
Currently on the PCT and hiked over Kearsarge through Rae Lakes last month. Without question the section from there to Bishop Pass had my jaw on the ground at every moment of every day, with the lakes themselves being the pinnacle of natural beauty. I was getting chased by mosquitoes all day every day though, and vowed to return another month in the future when it’s not breeding season and spend more time there in a non-thru hiking mentality. I’ll be revisiting this video when that time comes.
Definitely worth a revisit!!! Don’t you just love the PCT right after Kennedy all the way through Sonora?!
Great video! Thanks for sharing.
You bet!
This place is magnificent! Watching this just makes me feel good man! Brilliant episode 🥾🥾
Wooooooo thanks!
