@@philsantillan Aye. 'Tis me...the canoe guru😂
Do you recall the location or campsite number on Jordan lake with the beach and stairs to the kitchen? Planning a trip June 2024. Thanks
The site we stayed at was 1203 (on BWCA.com & Paddle Planner). Site 1201 looked very nice and secluded as well! Site 1202 was average. Be sure to locate the pictographs in the narrows towards Ima Lake while you're there. They're faint, but still cool. Have fun!
You are allowed to use the Canadian portage at Prairie Portage without any special permits as is the case for all portages on the border.
That's what we wanted to think, but we had read so much conflicting information about using the Canadian Portage-- and considering there was a portage on the USA side, we decided not to gamble and risk pissing off our northern neighbors.
I'll bet you were the couple I passed your first morning. I was paddling a Savage River Blackwater, with a rudder. Yes, it was HOT! I was on my way to Lake Superior so I had to log lots of miles in that heat. I left Mountain Lake on Wednesday morning and just about froze to death, cold and rainy. Spent the night at Ft. Charlotte and did the Grand Portage Thurs. morning.
Yes! You were flying, caught up with us at the giant beaver dam. How did you fare in the storm?
I was on Rose Lake, BeaV 's team had caught up to me ( they started at Rainy Lake on Saturday) We all took shelter under an upturned canoe at the beginning of the 2 mile portage. We all camped together on Mtn. Lake. A solo tripper was gracious enough to invite BeaV's team in. I arrived later at 11pm. One very dark night!@@mandyaugustin
@@voyager5832 That is too cool! How was the 10 mile Grand Portage? Did you plan to meet up with BeaV? They do some crazy routes eh? I've read about them on BWCA.com. Do they have any videos as well? I'm sure you made that solo tripper's trip btw!
Thye Grand Portage wasn't bad. It's 9 miles despite all the signs saying it's 8 1/2. There's a bunch of us that do the border route every year. We stay at the casino in Grand Portage and have a hospitality room to party in and swap stories. I'm signed up for 2024. This will be my 7th time doing it.@@DaneCordes
wow that lake at the end! Nice trip, looks like this is a fun route
One of my favorites and it's light on the portaging! It was a fun solo, but I'm hoping to do it again in 2024 with a crew. Thanks!
@@DaneCordes I was looking for a late summer route I could do in my kayak, likely a solo trip as well as I dont know anyone will join me. I sold my canoes to buy the kayaks to paddle the mississippi and now I wish I had saved one of them. They kayak is heavy so limited portages would be a blessing
@@escapewithjay I think the kayak would be doable. Otherwise, I rented a really nice solo canoe from Gunflint Lodge and then they picked me up from Voyageur Outfitters. You should check this video out of the Granite River. It's my favorite! kzread.info/dash/bejne/fX-nw5ahdbDep7w.html
Nice trip, thanks for sharing
How long did it take you to get from the drop off into knife lake? Thinking of taking this route next year
You definitely should! From Rocky Point (American Point) we fought a gnarly headwind the entire way to the campsite directly across from Thunder Point which took us about 9 hours. With no wind, I think we could've paddled that in 6 or 7 hours. You never know what Mother Nature is going to throw at ya! Would still do it again in a heartbeat though.
Oh wow. That was a lot faster than paddle planner forecasted :). Thanks for the feedback :)
Actually, thinking more about it...6-7 hours with a tail wind. 7-8 hours with no wind. And 8+ hours with a headwind. Final answer 😂
@@DaneCordes lol...thanks again. I think we're gonna try to do American Point to some place on knife or south arm - base camp for a few days (we like to fish) and then go back to American Point. Not my final answer, but that's the plan. Trying to find info on what campsites are good for hammock camping is a little hard. How do the campsites look? Probably going to have a group of 6.
wonderful views.i went that way a bunch of times in the 80's 90's on my way to la croix before i started trips to canada.everything did not change much i see.
That's great to hear! I don't like change. I heard that the pictos were much brighter, even just as recent as the 90's, but we thought they still looked very nice.
Even the squirrel was like “yeah it’s too hot. Just gonna chill on this branch here for a sec!” 😂
That cool...
Any chance there's lead in the paint that you're sanding?
Great question! I asked the previous owner about the paint and he said they used spray paint in the early 90's. Since lead paint was banned in 1978, I'm hoping it was safe. I probably should've still used a respirator instead of an n95 though. I'll take an IQ test this weekend!
@@DaneCordes I'm glad you had that information. I have a vintage canoe to clean up too but I don't think I can take a chance sanding the paint off.
@@colomblanco Well good luck with the project! It was kind of fun.
Solution is to wet sand.
Another great video 😊 how many trips is that this year? #goals
This was our 4th, but we got 1 left! The Little Indian Sioux River North in September. We've got 7 days set for it, but zero plan as of right now lol.
Thanks for sharing your trip !
I was at gunflint at the beach a week after you were…it’s beautiful country
I've been there 5 times now, and the last time was quite the circus! I believe the parents were trying to tire the children out before a wedding event. Can't blame em.
@@DaneCordes it’s always a circus on the gunflint
What's the max height on that drone?
It's a DJI Mini Pro 3. It will go as high as 1600 feet, although the gov limits it to 400. I like to just take it straight up for 1 minute and bring it right back down to the E.P. parking lot early morning or late afternoon for a quick 2 minute shot. I also use a flight tracker app, even though the planes are supposed to have a minimum ceiling in the park and can be heard a long long ways away. In Costa Rica, I took it up to the 500m max and almost lost it due to signal loss!
What kind of camp chair is the one Dan is using?
helinox.com/products/beach-chair?variant=31752887664717 We bought it (and our canoe) from Dan at the Silent Glide Canoe Shop. For some reason he only had the Leave Pattern...which is kinda fun. www.wisconsincanoesandkayaks.com/ It is a very low sitting chair. Sometimes difficult to crawl out of after a hard day and/or too many drinks!
How did I miss this video? 😂 thanks again for taking us along and then taking time to edit and post
It definitely takes me a while! Some people give me shit for the video quality or music...but it doesn't bother me. I didn't go to video editing school lol. This is mainly for us to remember trips by and for cool people to explore other E.P's! I'm glad some peeps find them fun. I would never take them down for 1 or 2 trolls!
@@DaneCordes lol...I appreciate these. Also gives me hope that my wife will take more trips with me. I always try to show her these videos and say, "Look...this couple goes a lot and they have fun!"
If you want to get the absolute best aluminum cleaner go to a welding store and get the stuff they use
I actually have to stop by Mississippi Welding Supply today. Will check it out. Thanks!
I just got mine the other day from the original owner who bought it in 74. His came with a sail rigging as well
I learned in the early 70's to paddle and sail in grumman canoes, time pf my life. Those sail rigs are harder to find these days, unless your very lucky! Just picked up a 15' in mint condition, doesn't look more than 3-4 yrs old he took excellant care of it.
@@dananorth895 The most rare part is the Mast Step casting that bolts onto the riveted flange in the front of the canoe. It's a square aluminum casting that the foot of the mast rests in. The spars can be had at any Metals Supermarket. Sail~Rite has easy to sew sail kits that will work. Mine has the standing lug sail (54 sq. ft.) for the 15ft Pooduck Skiff.
My son and I were there 2 weeks after you. Stayed at the first site as it was open and the 2nd site was occupied. Didn’t feel like paddling all the way to the east sites to see if they were occupied. We mainly fished, best walleye fishing I’ve ever had. Enjoyed your video
I bet it looked a lot better in there when everything greened up!
@@DaneCordes yes but the mosquitoes were of biblical proportions
@@kevincaspersen4456 Haha! Too funny. Glad I'm not the only one! I bet I had 100+ bites after this last trip.

Didn't even notice!
Thank you for your video, not able to go to Bwca this year. Binge watching videos
Well, I hope you get back up there next summer! Winter might be awesome too...but I'd need to invest in wayyy different gear.
Enjoyed your video, thanks for sharing..
Just found y'alls channel and it's great! Thanks for sharing! Yea, if you don't wanna fish and just wanna chill in your hammocks, have at it, to each their own! Keep it up and can't wait to see more stuff from ya!
Someday I'll get back into 🎣!
Compared to other areas you’ve been to, how would you rate this trip? Trying to plan for next year and I want to do something new. I’ve only been on granite river route.
I'd say this was middle of the road for us. We seek out places with good swimming, hammocking, and "froggin' & fishin'" aka clean shallows for the dog to stay busy but safe. The Jordan Lake site was pretty awesome. It is a bit of a turn off entering/exiting the park via a lake that motor boats are allowed, but such is life. How many days, how much effort, and what kind of trip (relaxing, fishing, site-seeing, etc) are you looking to have? We'd be happy to make some recommendations.
@@mandyaugustin took the wife on hey first trip and she gave some “requirements” for the next one. We are definitely hammock campers and she loves a good camp with a beach front. Short portages are preferred (less than 75 rod) and some cool things to explore.
@@philsantillan Let me think about this for a bit and I'll come up with something! In the meantime, I learned so much from the Tumblehome Podcast. You should check it out! It takes 10 or so episodes before they really hit their stride. tumblehomepodcast.com/ Erik from Tumblehome also posted a bunch of campsite pics w/ grades on the Clearwater Lodge website. clearwaterhistoriclodge.com/campsites/
Ooo…didn’t know about this website. I listen to their podcast but never went to the Clearwater site. Just listened to them while working out 😂
Wow - what an incredible route. Heading up to BWCA next month for a shorter loop, but definitely putting this one on my bucket list.
You must! So far, I think that part of the park was our favorite.
I just literally got done washing a 1968 grumman. With star bright aluminum cleaner/ restorer, basically acid. It removes oxidation and grime. It works well. I also used a medium grit scotch bright and rubbed lightly. I’m very happy with it.
I watched as many vids as I could before I started my project. Your way sounds like a great option!
What the h*** is BWCA E.P. Use word`s.... USA Vet
Howdy! It's short for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and E.P. is for Entry Point. There are over 50 different entry points to the park.
@@DaneCordes Thank you......US Vet.....Old E-Bike Chris No disrespect ....
@@chrisrenek9152 no offense taken man! Have a good one!
Hey Dane, do I have to come back to see better quality? It looks like YT has not finished processing the video. That portage to Crocodile is just miserable with the uphill. Will revisit the video in a couple of days.
Yeah, it seems like it's taking a while to go from SD to HD. That portage reminded me to go on a diet!
Beautiful area. Any chance you could share the brand on your camp chair and what you use for charging. We do a lot of remote camping and always looking for easy equiment.

Amazing video. We have not tried going in that early. What kind of boots are those?
You should! We tried on these Lacrosse boots at a Fleet Farm in Marshfield, WI and really liked them. They're similar to the brand Muck Boot. We wore sealskinz underneath and stayed very comfortable. We stayed at that site on Clove lake back in August 2020. Great swimming beach! Unfortunately ppl always leave lots of garbage in the BWCA I always come home with more of their garbage than my own. Leave No Trace folks!
Man that site was sweet! I'd love to be there in the summertime and just swim all day long.
love what you do. just the right mix of narration, sounds of the wilderness and music. I'd like to see some cooking, maybe some meal planning and gear, some fishing. and lastly, we gotta get you up off the ground. i never thought i could sleep in a hammock till i bought a good one. there are many.
Definitely! Putting these old vids together I'm realizing some other stuff that I want to remember that I don't have footage of. I hear that sky sleeping is the way to go. I really want to try it out. Maybe this summer...?
