  It didn't take too long, possibly a few weeks. Both my parents are still Italian citizens, so that may have helped speed up the process.

  Hearing you speaking the dialect made me think of my grandparents and the summers I spent in agrigento with them. I miss them and miss hearing those words. I lost it over the years not using it living in the states…you speak wonderful!! Thank you for speaking this beautiful language Sicilia beddu!!

  Da sardo ho capito buona parte delle parole tranne alcune dai suoni alieni alla lingua sarda, per il resto ho riconosciuto alcune caratteristiche simili al sardo tipo i finali di parola in -u e alcune parole praticamente identiche. Sono perfettamente d'accordo sul fatto che ciò che conti alla fine è se la lingua, o il dialetto che sia, vengano parlate affinché non muoiano e che soprattutto fanno parte della cultura e dell'identità di ognuno di noi perché l'appartenere a un popolo, nel mio caso il sardo, non esclude l'esser italiano, e viceversa, ma è anzi una sfumatura in più che ci rende unici.

È vero, certe sfumature linguistiche possono sembrare un po' strane, ma sono proprio queste differenze che rendono ogni lingua così interessante, giusto?   Sicilian is a proper language with its own literature. That should be the national language of the Sicilian state in my opinion. Being that is part of the Italian Republic of course Italian should be an important part of the official state.

  I grew up in little italy Toronto (St Clair) in the 60/70/80s, and I feel blessed to have lived the experience of hearing every Italian dialect under the sun! God bless all the Italian who immigrated to Canada, Australia, USA, Argentina etc.. Their contributions have positively impacted everyone around them in countless ways ❤ God's Peace

  i can understand standard Italian, like the people speak on the news programs that are meant for a wide audience outside of Italy, but there were some words and phrases that i did not recognize - such as the varied use of the word "Come" and use of other words in place of words that I would expect such as the prepositions "di," "d'" dalle" degli". Anyway that was interesting, thank you.

  @@vincemelbourne yes, but german and english are close. haus, maus, bier are pretty much the same, but i can't think of phrases that are the same. when you say things like "sopra tutto" it thicks my ear. that's pretty close to italian. to my ear.

  @@jameshudson169 Yes you're right. Italian and Sicilian are really closely related. They both belong to the Italo-Dalmatian language family, which most of the central and southern Italian languages/dialects belong to. So I guess it is the similarity between English as spoken in England and English as spoken in Scotland or better still, between English and Scotts. Similar but not the same. 😊🙏

  @@vincemelbourne yes, but i ask myself how often does a scottsman throw some english in their scotts in just call it scotts? i read that catalan children have a hard time distinguishing the spanish or catalan origin of words. a speaker of pennsylvania dutch on the other hand probably has little exposure to standard german, but would use quite a bit of english. my question is how much borrowed italian is there in sicilian?

  @@jameshudson169 Italian has influenced Sicilian a lot, and Sicilian has also affected Italian. They've borrowed words from each other over time. All the languages in Italy, including Sicilian, have helped shape standard Italian. This is why standard Italian has always been easy for Italians to understand, even if it's not their first language. However, things are changing, with more Italians now speaking only standard Italian, while local languages like Sicilian are mostly spoken by older people. It's hard to say exactly how much Italian words are in Sicilian, but it's clear that both languages have influenced each other.

  My father had 6 brothers they got together every Sunday and spoke Sicilian, unfortunately the children understood but didn't speak as we were in America and had to Americanize,so sad we mostly lost the Language

  My mom was Sicilian and she had a different way of pronouncing "figlio" & "figlia.". She would always say to my brother, "my son, my son.". But she pronounced it "ma feegyo, ma feegyo.". And to me she would say, "ma feegya" Is that a Sicilian dialect??! Or was that just her baby-talk? (Which she often did with the kids).

  Thanks for your comment. That seems to be Sicilian. Every area of Sicily has it's own dialect of Sicilian, so the language differs as you move from one town to the next, but it is usually possible for all Sicilians to understand each other. All the best 😊🙏

  It’s wonderful that you can speak Siciliano. I hope that your family are able to pass it down through the generations. Some of us have not been so lucky to have the language passed down and must travel back to our ancestors homelands to learn it. It is a fantastic legacy that your parents have left for you and your family Vince 🤝

  grazie tanto per il vostro video. I mie genitori erano della Sicilia. hanno lasciato la Sicilia nel 1930. sono andati a Milano e dopo a Roma. nel 1947 abbiamo lasciata l’Italia per le state unite. I mie genitori parlavano l’italiano con noi bambini e il siciliano tra lori stesi. io non posso parlare il siciliano, ma lo capisco. non ho mai andarti a scola in Italia perché ero tropo giovane. grazie mille .
