I think the main problem with Gary's output, since 1994, is that it's just him. He needs the input of other musicians, like when he first began, to add that certain spark. He has always been a control freak over his songs but just having another person play what he tells them (Steve Harris) and then burying it in his "wall of sound" just doesn't cut it. When you listen to Replicas, TPP, Telekon, Dance and even I, Assassin, you can hear the other musicians' influences coming through which adds another dimension to his songs. I too write on my own but I understand that your own ideas can become stale, even without you realising it. I, like some others, wish he would work with Chris Corner (IAMX) instead of Ade Fenton, as I don't think Ade Fenton is accomplished enough as a musician to know what is needed to halt the monotony. I personally think M&S is a better album than both Savage and Intruder - yes it is a mish-mash of ideas, but at least it isn't boring, and sadly that is where we are today. Intruder is a bore and no amount of "effected" CR78 or Vox Humana makes it better.

I hear all you're saying on this review and the reasons given, and appreciate your opinions. I might be rare in Gary Numan fandom for actually liking a lot of the jazz-funk fusion period of his career. The presence of saxophone and female backing vocals complement the harder synth sounds rather than drown them out. Perhaps it's because I came to Gary Numan around this time. I discovered him late with the 1989 live album The Skin Mechanic and was blown away by it. Fascinating to contemplate your suggestion that Ade Orange should have produced the whole record. I bet that would have made all the difference. Maybe I'm also more forgiving because I know the album was made at a very low point in Gary's life; he was out of inspiration and bordering on bankruptcy (and after the record's failure *was* bankrupt). It was cobbled together a bit at a time and he used whomever was available to play on and produce each track, hence the lack of cohesion. Unlike you, I really like the title track! I don't mind Unknown and Hostile either. Both New Thing and The Need go on too long because there aren't enough songs on the album, I suspect. The Need is boring, I'll grant you that. On the CD release containing all the B-Sides, there is the sublime A Time to Die. I Can't Stop is best served live (and the best version is on The Skin Mechanic video, now released on DVD and CD as Hammersmith Live 1989 (not to be confused with the live album of the same name, which was actually highlights from the 1988 tour!!)). I enjoyed your honest review here. Thanks for sharing.

I love this guy very much, his show in Athens Ga blew me away. Apologies, after realizing that Luis has passed I can only send the hardest condolences a musician can send. Please, everybody who's interesting in the world mind altering drugs. For the love of any god that will listen please vet the hell out of every person you meet. Nobody has your back like your closest, and nobody should have to die because of a filthy drug dealer slinging the dreaded F drug tightly packaged in a generally harmless recreational experience. Rest in Peace Luis, I'm so happy I was able to share your amazing live show experience with my closest friends.

Omg I just learned about his transition. The point of last night which was Friday was to listen to The Soft Moons last 3 albums as my Friday night thing to do. I really like Wasting. I discovered The Soft Moon in 2013. What a gifted musician he is. He's from my city of Los Angeles. Also getting into Silent Servants music who also died with him and Silent Servants wife. Listening to his interviews , music , I kind of get it why I too would escape using drugs.

I liked Intruder, LOVED Savage. Tyler has some solid points about Gary's constant God references. Trent Reznor does the same in NIN. As far as the sound of the album, it is smoother than Savage, but a lot less impactful. Intruder is slightly bland, and is repetitive, but I can tell it's a concept album. Splinter (Songs from a Broken Mind), 2013 - Producer Ade Fenton. Savage (Songs from a Broken World), 2017 - Producer Ade Fenton. Intruder, 2021 - Producer Ade Fenton. No wonder the sound is too much the same. Savage has memorable tracks. Intruder does not.

If you haven't heard the maxi-single 12" extended version of We Take Mystery you are in for a treat. Upgrade your stylus, hook up the sub woofer, and enter the gates of heaven. The slow version on the flip side just fucking swings. Same goes for the 12" for Love Needs No Disguise - WOW. Timeless track. How this wasn't a smash hit is beyond me.

Such a lovely fella and a desperately sad loss to the world of music and art. F**king fentanyl. It can all be quite overwhelming trying to figure out how to minimise premature deaths as best we can. I had my time using drugs and I genuinely feel for those we have lost. They never set out for the end result, and too much finger pointing and victim blaming occurs. It usually comes from people who haven't been through it but live their lives in such sanctimonious fashion. People who pretend to have empathy, but behind it all they're really only a seething judgemental mess. Drug use is such an incredibly complex issue that is almost always linked to childhood trauma. Sorry just venting here. I came off another YT video filled with a load of self appointed judges and it just pissed me off.

His music meant so much to me, both as a listener and as a fellow musician. He sold me the electronic drum pad he used on Total Decay and Zeros a couple of years ago and that was how I first talked to him. I can't imagine the loss that you have experienced and the pain that you have been going through these last few weeks, but hopefully knowing that his music made an impact on people's lives and is loved throughout the world gives you some solace. His memory is going to live on.

@marioncvasquez I played his music today in the elementary school I work at while working on decorating a classroom door. Kids coming and going in the hall were hearing me listening to Soft Moon. Even the janitor walked by and asked who was I listening to. He lives on through his music and will be played anywhere and everywhere....even an elementary school. I'm sure Luis would love that. So glad and appreciative I got see him live and meet him and the band.
