This kind of storytelling was missing from Ragnarok, GoW (2018) had a lot of mysterious little tidbits that definitely kept you in the edge of your seat and captured a really interesting tone as a soft reboot, Ragnarok is very predictable and just kinda wraps up all the story threads set up without any tension or storytelling, it doesn't add any more lore or really *engage* you in any way, it was quite disappointing as a sequel

Something you missed in your analysis is that the Templars don't actually support the Loyalists later in the game. Yes, John Pitcairn was a Redcoat Officer (supposedly) attempting to make peace with the Sons of Liberty, but once the war started the Templars' goal shifted to influencing the outcome in their favor. Notably, Haytham and Connor are able to team up to hunt Benjamin Church because Church had betrayed them both: robbing the Continental Army and turning his back on the Templars to continue supporting England. As far as Charles Lee is concerned, Haytham was trying to set up Charles to be Commander of the Patriot army and, in real history, Charles actually was arguably the better choice in terms of military experience but he eventually ended up as second-in-command. The real Charles was generally okay with this decision, but he lost confidence in Washington during the early phases of the war. Historically, Charles was court-martialed after the Battle of Monmouth for incompetence and disrespect of a superior officer, and there were insubstantial rumors connecting him to conspiracies to remove Washington from command. In-game this can be interpreted as Haytham continually seeking control over the Patriot forces. With Charles's hero worship of him, that would have ultimately placed the fate of the revolution squarely in Haytham's hands, allowing him to build a Templar utopia according to his vision. Having lost out on command through political means, Haytham attempted to assassinate Washington to course correct, but you know how that turned out. Charles never knew about the connection between Haytham and Connor until just before Haytham's death, so his extreme hatred at the end of the game is fairly well justified. Connor was never more than an upstart to Charles, until he killed the man he respected most.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts bro, personally when it comes to real life history like I said in the video anything to do with the American Revolution I’m quite rusty on compared to other era’s that the franchise has been set in, so I honestly can’t speak to the part of the real life Charles, but only my views of the games portrayal of him and the other events in game. Haytham’s support of Charles just never clicked with me and always seemed strange that out of all of the Templars, Charles Lee was chosen as the final villain of the game when instead it should’ve been Haytham in my opinion at least, and by comparison Charles is a laughably bad villain when compared to Haytham which has always bothered me about AC3 ever since it came out in 2012. AC3 should have handled the conflict of the revolution better by having the loyalists be more morally ambiguous instead of these cookie cutter villains that we’re told to dislike from the outset, where as the patriots even though they have good intentions they inevitably are much more morally grey with Washington ordering the attack on Connor’s village, which I think was a great part of the game and would’ve loved to have seen more of that from the loyalists, with the capacity for both to be good and bad. These are just my overall thoughts regarding the groups and characters in the game but I do currently have a proper analysis video in the works for ac3 that will be covering all aspects of the game coming out quite soon!

@@lordology4815 That's what I'm saying though, there IS moral complexity on the Loyalist side. John Pitcairn was a British Officer trying to avoid a full on war, and Benjamin Church betrayed the Templars out of loyalty to England- there's even a cut voice clip of him singing Rule Britannia with his dying breaths. The more cartoonish villains, Thomas Hickey and Charles Lee, are Patriot officers. You say we're "told to dislike" them, but I just don't see that. We're introduced to them as Haytham and they become our ragtag band of lovable rogues, and then comes the revelation that they're actually Templars. They're still the same people, the only thing that actually changes is the context in which we view their actions. I'll make an exception for Lee on my last statement, since his next scene after the scene shift is him literally beating up a child. Not much nuance there, but maybe there are some memory shenanigans at play. Connor remembers the encounter in the worst possible way because it happened within hours of his village being burned and his mother killed. It makes sense that Lee would be more of a demon in his recollection since it became his driving motivation for so many years. From an outside perspective though, the player should realize that it makes no sense for the Templars to kill Connor's mother. (Although if you REALLY want to get into crack theories, imagine Lee's actions from the context that he's actually IN LOVE with Haytham and see where that takes you lol)

@@KicktheSky34 I never considered it from the perspectives of the Templars themselves in regards to Pitcairn and Church showing the loyalists in a different light, though I always found it funny that Pitcairn is trying to to meet with Adam’s and I think Hancock to try and make peace but next minute is absolutely blasting the hell out of bunker hill, but nonetheless that scene between Pitcairn and Connor is easily one of my favourites in the game ‘you wield your blade like a man but your mouth like a child’ but despite that being my favourite interaction in ac3 his actions of blasting bunker hill I thought was weird and then saying nah bro I just wanted peace lol. I didn’t know about Church saying that either, that’s actually a pretty cool touch and Church in game is not a good dude, taking advantage of the sick and helpless for his own profit from earlier convo’s with him is wild and that’s what I mean by them being dislikable, I wouldn’t say Charles is the same person as you said but I feel like personally ac1’s Templar targets I think are more morally ambiguous than in ac3 and that’s probably why I love ac1 so much, not for the gameplay but for which the villains were presented and made Altaïr (a truly devoted pupil of the creed) doubt his own actions despite his life long loyalty to them and of course through his own mentors manipulation, for me ac3 and by extension Rogue weren’t as morally ambiguous as they were trying to be, at least that’s how I see it! I appreciate the different perspective for which you’ve stated your points bro, definitely makes it way more interesting to discuss in an open type forum like this! Oh 100% bro, the Templars never set out to murder Connor’s mum but Charles did make it very clear to him what he thought about the native Americans which after seeing him suck up to Haytham was pretty funny and was like is this REALLY the same dude, and ok not gonna lie reading that last bit with Charles being in love with Haytham theory made me lol for real! 😂🤣

@@lordology4815 For sure! I'm a bit of a casual fanboy for the history of our Revolutionary War, so I can talk all day about this stuff. Naturally, AC3 is probably my favorite in the series. Top 3 anyway. Too bad Rogue was pretty much all wasted potential though, I kind of can't stand it. There's so much fertile ground for a betrayal storyline in this time period, but instead it boils down to a misunderstanding over previously unseen First Civ tech-of-the-week that hasn't been seen since and a teaser for Unity. Such a half-assed plot. The best I can say about it is that it fleshes out some of the background lore connecting Black Flag and Liberation to 3. And we got more Ben Franklin. Maybe Church’s comments about upcharging his patients hit different for me, as an American. To me, his attitude is no different from healthcare today. I don’t like it, but at least he’s honest about it. You're right though, he is probably the least likable of the Templar crew during the prologue. But I think he ends up being one of the more sympathetic by the end due to turning his back on the Templars. Defectors in this series usually end up on the opposing side. I can't think of many who tried to walk away entirely. I kind of respect it. Shay would've been a million times more intriguing if he'd walked out on the Templars after he stopping Achilles. His motives make no sense the more you think about them. And Pitcairn; one small problem I have with 3 is that it doesn’t really explain the progression of the war very well if you are just watching the cutscenes. The first shots were fired at Lexington and Concord, where the British were surprised by heavier than expected resistance from the hastily assembled colonial militia. The British fell back to Bunker Hill outside of Charleston, and the Patriots pursued them to press the attack, but eventually had to fall back themselves due to being outgunned and outnumbered. The two armies reorganized into what became the Siege of Boston. Now in-game, according to Pitcairn, he was originally heading to Concord to negotiate with Adams and Hancock but Connor and Paul Revere assumed he was coming to arrest them. By the time you catch up to him at Bunker Hill, it was too late for a peaceful solution. At that point the social unrest has become a full on insurrection, so he didn't have much choice beyond trying to end the conflict quickly. That’s what Haytham was talking about when he said Connor “cocked up thoroughly enough to start a goddamn war.” After the initial skirmishes the Declaration of Independence was officially ratified and George Washington was made Commander of the entire Colonial Army, such as it was. He then proceeded to get his ass kicked across the northeast the rest of the year by the better equipped and better trained British Army, eventually being chased out of New York entirely. What was left of his forces holed up in Valley Forge for the winter of 1777, so a lot of what Charles Lee and Haytham say in-game about him is actually fair criticism, if not completely spot on. The game glosses over pretty much all of this though. One second you're in New York, killing Hickey, then you're in Philly for the signing, and then it's suddenly winter of next year. 3's story was definitely rushed here and there...

I think in the book, Haytham eventually became disillusioned with the Templar’s goal, but was too deep into the life to be able to turn back. He thought the Templar was a kind of a black and white situation, where obviously their way is better, but after finding out what Reginald did to Edward, that view was shattered. Although he continuously follow the Templar’s cause, he couldn’t help but wonder time to time what would the Assassin be if his father was around. Would the brotherhood be better, even with himself by their side? It seems to him that the only reason the Templar feels like their method is the best, is because all this time they’ve been killing off people who had the chance to make the world a better place, since the Templar wanted it to be their ways only.

We know Haytham wanted connection and a family bc he once had tht in ac4's theatre ending. You didnt say but I bet even Ziio aligned more with the assassins--even moreso with her people being harbingers for the Isu and the sacred ground tht housed the temple. Haytham was dedicated to his mission, but also wanted strong relationships too and tht opposing ideology severely limited that. I never thought of Haytham viewing his father and the assassins in a more positive way. Certaintly makes him more tragic than what the game lets on.

What's painful about Haytham's story is that he actually can't go back to the life he knew. His entire life since young he was fooled by Reginald into thinking he was fighting for the right cause after Edward died. After finding out Reginald was the one who plotted Edward's death Haytham turned against him and even achieved his vengeance. But at that point Haytham was already too far deep as a Templar to turn back. So there was no choice for him to continue on with what he has been fighting for.

To be fair the templars aren’t evil, that’s why they made AC Rogue, to show it’s not a story of good vs evil, it’s two sides of the same coin. Pure freedom and liberty is just as dangerous as complete order and control. Haytham is a brilliant example of what the templars actually stand for, he even helps save the world from Achilles and the brotherhood he lead.

Although a story with a templar turning into an assassin like Shay's turning from assassin to templar would be an interesting thing to see, instead of the brotherhood welcoming him with open arms he has to slowly prove himself and show his loyalty (the MC doesn't need to agree with them, but have his own motives for going against the templars).

@@gunboymaximum3207 wasn’t that just Altair’s wife? I think they essentially covered that when they went to Cyprus in the PSP game.

@tiffanyroberts6460 I kinda missed that one, lol. Besides, you could have elements that call back to (Maria's?) Story and Shay's story. Along with having different elements, making it unique. The theme of this game could show that no matter if you're a templar or an assassin, there is corruption in both parties, and no matter how hard you try to be perfect, you can't save everyone and you will slip up. But then the main character can see the noble side of both parties eventually but choose to be a part of the assassins cause their cause isn't to control but to let people be free and, at least in his eyes, they are a lighter Grey than the templars. Shining some light on the philosophies of both groups like how AC III and AC rogue did. But the way he defects the templars could be in such a way that it's impossible to go back and say sorry. Hence why it would be called, Traitor

0:54 i love that it's common to believe that Kratos was, at the very least, semi-justified in his slaughtering of the pantheon

I really enjoy the fact that while Kratos was merciless, he also had a good side, which he talks about in Valhalla!
