    Hey dude! I currently own a Boss Katana MK2 but the tones I've been creating and working on just doesn't sit right with me. I'm specifically targeting old school metallica, Megadeth, exodus etc. Do you think I'd be able to nail or get close to these tones on a Marshall DSL1 Head?

  • @musingsofrock
    @musingsofrock23 күн бұрын

    Yeah definitely, that's what it's for! Solid state or amp emulations won't cut it most of the time. I've done several videos on the Thrash tone.. check this channel. I've talked about the EQ and the pedals and the amp settings. Just use a super overdrive (tubescreamer circuit) and a DSL 1w head. That should work. Most of the thrash stuff is either Marshall or Mesa boogie. Unless you have a full band it is not worth spending $3000 for an amp head. 1W is all you need and the DSL is at the right price point.

    @@musingsofrock I'll keep checking out this channel man! I'm wondering if I can connect my DSL1 Head to a V30 Celestion Harley Benton Cabin, it says the impedance is 8 Ohms but the DSL1 Head is around 16 Ohms impedance. I don't know much about EE stuff so I'm hoping that would be fine?

  • @musingsofrock

    @@cmd7054 I run it through a single Celestion 70-80 speaker and it is rated at 8 or 16 ohms. Check if the cabinet will allow both.

    Is this microtonal?

  • @musingsofrock
    @musingsofrockАй бұрын

    I used to know a Bryan LI.. same spelling.. lol.. Probably not the same guy. If I understand your question correctly, no microtonal is generally non-western scale related to where for example there is a note between say E and F. Here we are dealing with the regular notes but I think your question is the interval. So dim5th just gives it that eerie sound because it is unstable, it's between the 4th and the 5th.

    James Hetfield used his Electra (Japan-made Gibson) Flying V with Seymour Duncan Invader Bridge pickup he used from Kill Em All. On Ride the Lightning, he used a borrowed Marshall JCM 800/JMP 2203 from producer Flemming Rasmussen for recording the album. This is because his modded Marshall Super Lead (modded by Jose Arredondo) was stolen during Kill Em All Tour when Metallica were about to embark their European Tour while in Boston. Cab-wise, it's a Celestion G12H-65 Creamback and for pedal is an Ibanez TS-9 (for distorted tones) and Boss CE-2 (for clean tones). If you were to do it on a budget, You should: 1) Upgrade bridge pickup with Seymour Duncan Invader Bridge pickup. 2) Boss Katana 50/100 combo as it has Tube Screamer pedal and a Deep Cab Resonance switch in the Katana Tone Studio Software (download the software to access it). 3) for tone recreation on Katana, I can send you the patch link for downloading and importing the tone to the tone studio software.

    That's a nice tone you got going there. I've toyed with the idea of getting a tube combo. Maybe a Marshall Origin where you can select the wattage to a more apartment friendly level. Only thing I know is if I ever do, I'd get something with at least a 10" speaker then upgrade the speaker to a Celestion green back or cream back. Picks. I've tried so many. Fenders, Dunlops, thin, thick, etc. Around 2014, I finally found one that I liked so much that I haven't used anything else since. Dunlop Ultex sharp .90. Only thing that I don't like about them is they're hard to see if you drop them. I'm not sure if they were considered thrash or speed or what. But if you haven't heard of them, check out Znowhite. In particular their album Act Of God. Lastly, I figured out a few weeks ago that I'm really not a Les Paul person. Love the tone, but awkward playing. My cheap early 2000s Epiphone SG was more comfortable. But, just got me a Fender Player Strat with hss. Blue Burst. Love it so far.

  • @musingsofrock
    @musingsofrock3 ай бұрын

    I get you on the awkward playing. I hate the flying V for that reason. It is really awkward playing. You can select the wattage on the DSL1 to 0.1w and 1W. But the playability suffers. You can't get that fast picking freedom in the 0.1watt mode. I wish they'd make a JCM 1 Watt. I emailed Marshall and asked them to reissue the JCM 1W head, they said they'd pass it to the marketing team.. lol

    Great video! Been looking everywhere for on parole lesson. Did you learn the solos by ear or do you have sheet music for them?

  • @musingsofrock
    @musingsofrock4 ай бұрын

    What I played here (the bits of solos) was just something I improvised with an "Eddie Clarke type of soloing" in mind.. That's not the actual solo. I don't think there is any sheet music for the solos for On Parole but check Songsterr, it has a lot of solos and tab for a lot of Motorhead songs. So this version in this video is kind of a Wallace/Eddie mishmash I suppose. I do have some videos on Fast Eddie Clarke type soloing. Check those out if you want. I will eventually add more to that series as well. Thanks for watching, gladed you enjoyed it.

    So it's really bad quality? Good to know. I will not get it. I'm thinking in get the Bonanza moc toe. Have you check those boots? They look pretty good. They have really Goodyear welt. 2ble stitching, you should look at it.

  • @musingsofrock
    @musingsofrock4 ай бұрын

    This is not bad for the price, I'm sure it'll last 2-3 years city wear. Stitching is slightly wonky like C quality not A grade. The soles are holding out but the sides seem to be peeling off like erasers after you use them in school. lol. I think the real Redwing is probably more like a boot. This is a sneaker boot not a real boot. I'll check out the Bonanza moc toe, thanks for the tip.

  • @ThePreppybear
    @ThePreppybear4 ай бұрын

    @@musingsofrock thanks for answer buddy. Yeah like you said. Redwings or thorogood are really good boots, they will last for more than 8 years at least. But there very expensive. So I saw that boots Bonanza. I saw it on ebay they're not cheap as 50 dolar boots. They're like 150 or 170 I guess. And I saw how they make them and it looks that they use pretty good quality on the leather and the Goodyear welt is what convence me to get one of those. The only cons that I saw is that the sole is not vibram. But I guess is way much better that wolverine. Or silver fox, or even timberland boots. Hope you make a video of those moc boots soon.! ✌️

    Megadeth is basically Dave Mustaine, so to answer your rhetorical question, it's likely because of Dave's massive ego. He wants his guitars and vocals wayyyy up front, and the bass and drums are way in the background. Personally, I prefer a mix more like Pantera's (and Dimebag can scoop his guitars as much as he wants!). Just to play devil's advocate though, perhaps it was a stylistic choice to give an 80's-style mix to the entire discography of the band, for the sake of uniformity.

  • @musingsofrock
    @musingsofrock5 ай бұрын

    Yeah, I understand your point. World needs a hero was a good mix as a reference. The mix we are talking about here just sounds unbalanced, almost like a demo. But yeah, I agree, we do not know what they were thinking or what the intentions were.

    I concur. I own this one, though mine has a black background for the cover. My take on it is that it's a bluesier version of Fastway with a couple Motorhead styled songs thrown in. The cover itself is a reference to Fastway - the checkered flags and the Eddie's name done up like the Fastway logo. Then in the song "Naturally", when Eddie goes "it's just another day", he does the riff from the the Fastway song "Another Day". Eddie's vocals, and I'm probably way off here. At least some songs, I think he almost has an Ace Frehley sound. Great album.

Kill Em All tone is a very THIN and scratchy sounding album compared to later albums. Gain: 7-8 Bass: 2-3 Middle: 4-5 Treble: 7-9 Presence: 6-10 (if it's a dsl20) reverb: 4
