There seems to be very little decent film Of this route sadly. Lovely piece of work this film 👍🏼👍🏼
I love the video of Betty Thompson 🚂🚃🚃🚃❤️❤️
I love the video🚂🚃🚃🚃
What has happened to Dorman planet?
Holy cow, I saw Christine McIntyre in there from the three stooges.
What happened to Dorman?
For anyone thinking the locomotive was oil fired or fired with a mechanical coal feeder take a look at around 5 minutes in. The fireman is working hard with his shovel.
Nice job with the ballast broom. Don't park your cars too close to the track when using it. What's on the front of the machine? Is it a blade?
Yes, there is a plough/blade at the front.
Great to take a trip down memory lane, been 15 years since travelled on Perth Transport system, drove out of Beckenham for Swan Transit. Still the fastest and most efficient system I think between the states. I’m in Victoria since 2009 and we’re still way behind the 8 ball.
I remember this documentary as this was featured on the National Geographic Channel many years ago. So good to see this on YT.
As a grown man, this brought me to tears. Yes, silly i know . :(
I travelled in a run down NSW railway system that was criminally ignored by pollies of the time 1970s ending in catastrophic train crashes and many deaths
'Extravagant Victorian Railways' built by 'Cheap Labour' to be replaced by 'Waiter Service For Businessmen as well as Ordinary Passengers.' I assume this was made during a Tory Government tenure, it certainly appeals to a, err, 'Certain Type.' Same Railway Cutting Tactics still used: Cut service to a minimum, say one train just after the morning rush hour and one just before the evening rush hour: Point to "Falling Passenger Numbers" etc etc. Another money making scheme employed by the Brits: don't publish local train times in order to push people onto the premium Airport Service.
Something that struck me about this video was the phrase "room for all sorts of brains and abilities". To modern ears, it sounds incredibly inclusive and progressive for the time. I would never have imagined the railways would be where I'd see such sentiment so early. Delightful!
This was incredibly interesting to watch - I'm generally interested in steam engines, and in horses, and have never been terribly interested in diesel or electric locomotive power, but this was a fascinating look into how railways very much are highly specialized in carrying fixed freight. It has given me things to think about with regards to my views on moving the majority of freight back off the roads, and onto the rail network, in order to avoid quite so many wildlife habitats being fragmented by roads and highways - clearly, small freight quantities are ill-suited to the railways, and yet the continuing growth of the road network, and the pollution that comes with it, is something that I think we need to come to a reckoning with if we're to still have human life on this planet many generations from now.
Look how far we've come, from proper buffet cars and restaurants to some stressed operative dragging a trolly of expensive junk snacks down the centre isle and blocking passengers.lol.
The way ahead - more powerful, more faster, more cleaner, and less interesting, less exciting and less fascinating.
0:43 This Famous Train Station Kings Cross Was Opened In 1852 By The Great Northern Railway. When The London And North Eastern Railway Took It Over In 1923 This Is Were Flying Scotsman Left London In England And On Route To Edinburgh In Scotland In The United Kingdom On 1st May 1928. Awesome. Thanks Mate. X❤
At 11:47....as he says "Curves", and the photo of the woman in the background showing her curves..
8:42 WOW! I'm watching this in awe! Is that really how they used to cut rails? (A rhetorical question) Just looking at the little rig he's got there, it would take all day to cut through that rail! Surely they had air or steam powered tools to speed up the process somewhat? Unless I'm missing something here. Doesnt seem to be powered by my eye.
I WAS THERE!
It was a very special day!
Fabulous !!!
What horn is The Fowler locomotive fitted with?
I don't know the make, but I know it's a 5 chime.
Why couldn’t Betty Thompson run was it having problems.
Fire danger was too high.
Love the yellow rose horn
Love the whistle it’s got a fantastic sound 🚂
I dunno, rose tinted specs? all sat here in our clean homes. Truth is steam was awful, an awful time where the working environment was just dreadful. Thank goodness its gone.
BREL were a great outfit...why did it effectively cease to exist? Politics....we all know who killed it off.
God, youtube's automatic stabilizing has ruined this video.
Great old film. Shame about the stupid music ..hardly goes with men doing hard work.
Not a pair of goggles or a safety helmet them days. !!!!
I know its an old video but look at that gorgeous Perth blue sky
Two years before Titanic's fateful maiden voyage.
Did you know that Allan krieg passed away in 1996 he was in his 70s
It’s so great to see real men working instead of the tattooed, ponytailed, bearded freaks who now make up so much of this part of the blue collar workforce.
Not a single non-white face to be seen. We managed perfectly well without outside interference.
yet, another foggy day with rugged rubber baby bumpers

Mechanization doesn't exempt colonization ... sugar is more addictive than cocaine... oh yeah nationalization of sugar in the UK.... pffft
There goes their JOB! 😮😮😮😮😮
😮😮😮😮 supposed to stop at the red signal fatal mistake!!!!!!!!
I know salvage work is inherently dangerous but I saw more than a couple guys taking some unnecessary risks. Great video
No inflation back in 56.
Love how Yellow Rose' horn sounds like an A series 😂 (same style horns aren't they?)
The A series have twin chime horns, just like Yellow Rose, so the note would be similar, yes.
The whistle in the middle was always my favourite due to how much control you had of what sound was being made, made it extra fun to play with on Ashley day 😂 But the logging whistle she has now is the best!
Awesome presentation of things that can go wrong and do!
Was trump in charge of this railroad?
An untold story
WOW
