  FUN FACT: Britney was on the recording of WHAT'S GOING ON but couldn't attend the ceremony to be part of the performance due to still being on her tour. The performance of SLAVE from that year's BMA (on the Bellagio fountain) was pre-recorded a few weeks early. She was in Vegas at the time for her tour stop being filmed for HBO.

  I never get the whole “controversy” with her saying her own name 4 times. She didn’t need to say all of their names. She was ad Libbing and doing a riff and most likely she was doing it in the moment and not thinking about it. And if you’re going from the beat of this song and the fact that she was singing in time with the beat her name sonically actually suits the rhymthn of the ad lib. “Say be-yon-ce“ she has 3 syllables in her name add the 1 syllable of the word “say” you have 4 syllables to complete half a phrase. Remember music comes in 8 so if she’s ad libbing or doing a riff she needs to do half a phrase so she doesn’t drown on the chorus. Doing half of a phrase sounds tidy. Kelly Michelle and Farah have 2 syllables in their name so it’s going to be incomplete so if she starts singing “say Kelly, say michelle” she’ll sound off. Or she’ll have to over enunciate certain parts of their name which will sound weird. And she might be improvising this.
