The slow stepping down the stair case is gone.. they could have emphasized that in his "entrance" by doing a stylized "march" to emphasize the beat... Unless I am just so used to the "original" choreography that is why I am saying this... but this sucks! and no skull mask for the Red Death? booo!! his costume I can live with it :)

WOW. I've seen this four times live, watched the 25th anniversary DVD, the 2004 film, and listened to cast recordings REPEATEDLY since I was a little girl (I'm not even mentioning the non-ALW versions). I WISH I could have seen these two live. They really nail it!

There is a general 101, use the fricking stage. This guy just stands there, yeah, he moves a tiny bit. Even on the stairs, the actors move (sometimes they play up the costume's appearance and scare the guests, or a sarcastic little wave to them, etc), the staging, I think it's supposed to be in the ballet halls, which if you've seen the Garnier, there is no space in the foyer for a ball, a party maybe but not a full blown ball, only in the ballet halls. I don't mind this staging too much, and don't come at me with the "I'm not a real fan if I enjoy this" I've loved phantom since I was six, saw it in London when I was 8 with Earl Carpenter in the role.

Personally, I couldn't stand Bridget Costello. That tiny break at the end of her voice every time she sings makes her sound so whiney, as well as her tonality, which you can tell isn't nearly as clear and her vocal range isn't as high as Amy Manford's. I saw this production twice, but I live in a rural area so I had to watch the Matinee both times. The first time, I appreciated Bridget's performance but didn't enjoy it. 2nd time (after I had messaged the Art Centre to see who was performing, specifically so I could see Amy's performance - they couldn't say) when I was watching Bridget (again), I was trying so hard to make the most of it and enjoy the performance, but I legitimately couldn't stand her. Can't believe she made it into a leading role, as an "alternate", you would've expected her to sing and act at the same standard as her counterpart.

For the record, I saw the principal cast perform twice, and upon watching the graveyard sequence again now, I've come to a realisation. The singing is phenomenal, but the simplified set and new stage directions (particularly during Wandering Child) aren't amazing. Having The Phantom stand at eye level with Christine and Raoul rather than atop a crypt per the old staging makes it hard to feel the true weight of his influence. I also wish they had the fire shooting skull stick. Nevertheless, a beautiful production :)
@LeonorFiniCat Жыл бұрын
The punch-on is absolutely hilarious (especially when you can see it's fake, which of course it has to be- we don't want actors getting hurt, of course!), and to be honest, the cape-twirl/pyrotechnic combo is a little cheesy. But I dunno, part of me likes how the staging of this production drives home that the Phantom isn't supernatural, he's just a very lonely, dysfunctional dude who has to resort to parlour tricks to scare people. I feel that's at least partly deliberate, makes it a bit more realistic. Certainly the spectacle of the original production is special and something to miss, but I think this approach has value too. :)
