    My MIL pieced beautiful quilt tops. She was raised in Oklahoma during the times of the dust bowl. She backed all of her quilts with 100% cotton muslin. That’s just what she grew up using and she never changed. Quilts were to use, and you only saw the top when it was on the bed.

    How much quilting area do you have with the little rebel and the frame?

  • @LeahDay
    @LeahDay7 сағат бұрын

    You'll have around 8-9 inches, depending on the size of the frame rails. I find I have more space within a Cutie Frame than an Evolution Hoop Frame because the rails are thicker. Does that make sense?

    I’m getting a new Grace 21” quilting machine with a 12 foot frame. Do you have a video of how to do the computer operations for a frame that you don’t have to shift the quilt sideways ? Obviously, it has to be rolled down but I’d like to see how it works with a 12 foot frame. Thank you !

  • @LeahDay
    @LeahDay7 сағат бұрын

    No, a 12 foot frame only advances the quilt by rolling onto the rails. Rolling rail frames are not Hoop Frames - you do not advance side to side. 130 inches wide is the maximum sized quilt you can load on your frame, and that really is the biggest size quilt you'd ever want to put on a bed!

    I love love your sea oats design and have incorporated tiny swirl birds in it for a possible place in my bird log cabin quilt. How do you use this as an all over edge to edge design? I am a new quilter and up to now have only tried straight line quilting. I have tried to make it meandering but it gets all lost and unbalanced. Would you just do it in rows? On a juki home machine. Thanks! Karin

  • @LeahDay
    @LeahDay23 күн бұрын

    I recommend trying one of our paper quilting stencils to help you master free motion quilting - leahday.com/products/quilting-stencils I'll see about adding a Sea Oat with swirl birds... that is very specific and sounds cute! Quilting on the stencils gives you something to focus on and a linear path from left to right. The paper is very easy to rip away after you're done so long as you beat up the quilt a little bit (roll it up with the paper to the inside and outside). I hope that helps!

    I don’t understand the way the foot works…it looks like it is “hopping” but I don’t see a spring…..

  • @LeahDay
    @LeahDay23 күн бұрын

    This particular foot is on an older Bernina sewing machine - a 1230. The hopping is within the foot bar itself as the needle moves up and down. Newer Bernina machines have a compatible ruler foot so make sure you work with a Bernina dealer to get that for your machine.

    I noticed you locking your channel locks on the carriage. How can I get that? My machine doesn’t have it.

  • @LeahDay
    @LeahDay26 күн бұрын

    It’s not 100% required to use channel locks to hold the machine in place. I’ve attached QCT to a Cutie Breeze which doesn’t have channel locks and it worked just fine. Having them locks is convenient, but it’s not something you must have for this to work. In fact, if you forget and leave your machine locked in a direction, it would conflict.

    Leah, do I need to change anything about the take up rail, since I’ve added an idler rail?

  • @LeahDay
    @LeahDay23 күн бұрын

    The take up rail should be higher than your Idler Rail so the quilt builds up in the arm of the longarm instead of right against the quilt. Other than that, everything else stays the same.

  • @mjp5129
    @mjp512923 күн бұрын

    @@LeahDay thanks Leah. I attached the idler height, just enough to slip my fingers to the first knuckle, under the rail and at a slight angle to the take up rail. The take up is about 2.5” above the idler. I haven’t quilted anything but a practice piece, but seems to work pretty good. I also changed my belly bar. I’m copying yours. Removing the leader cloth and I’m going to buy those clips you use. Just have to get that glue residue removed from the rail. I changed the actual rail from the take up with the back/belly rail and vice versa. So I didn’t have to reinstall the longer leader. Sorry. Didn’t mean to make this a novel. Just so excited, about how much easier it’s gonna be to quilt, since that’s my least favorite part. Now, it won’t my quilting any better, even after 11 years, lol, but the doing it will be less stressful. Thanks again for all the inspiration. I’ve watched you from the beginning. You’ve done so well for yourself and family. 👍

    I find the challenge is the overlap by the lower end. With Barbies, the hip versus waist is such a large difference that we can see their behinds and the overlap at the V isn’t smooth which is not cool for stylish dresses. Maybe a zipper?

  • @LeahDay
    @LeahDayАй бұрын

    If you want to take on inserting a zipper only 3 inches long, that’s totally up to you! With my dress pattern, I was careful to overlap the back’s nicely and there isn’t a huge difference between the bunny’s hips and waist. As for surviving a toddler, make sure to backstitch at the back of the dress skirt seam. Betty had ripped one dress in this spot and it taught me to double check my backstitch in this area!

  • @chickadeeacres3864
