  Im seeing a lot of comments about how this boss isn't explained in the story, so i wanted to throw my thoughts out there: Throughout storymode, we see that everything can be corrupted; characters, cacti, mushrooms, even the water. So, my thoughts are that Barracuda represents the cave system as a whole; the orbs are debris and rocks (as are the shooting lines/squares), the soundbars are the echoes and vibrations inside the cave (also why the music has become foggy once inside), the snakes are possibly sea snakes from the water outside (the barracudas, if you will) that have been corrupted by the change), and the boss himself is a stalagmite/stalactite (why he can appear from any direction). This would also explain why he's at the entrance of the cave system, and even why you have to defeat him to continue farther in. When you defeat him, Barracuda eplodes into tiny pieces. Immediately after, the wall blocking your way explodes into tiny pieces.
