  These are called Bronze Army Cutworms. They do not eat any kind of alive vegetable, or crop. They will only eat invasive plants that are harmful to the environment, and rotting, decaying fruits. There is no need to chop this guy into pieces, they can go a long time without some parts of their body. You most likely should have given him to some bird, or thrown him into an area, other than your lawn.

  Bronze cutworms and army cutworms are both lawn pests that can cause serious damage to plants by cutting and attacking them at night. Bronze cutworm larvae look like caterpillars with their thick bodies, and they can be light to dark brown with a bronze sheen. They have a broad yellow stripe running down the center of their bodies, with complementary stripes on either side. They also have a dark brown collar with three white bars behind their heads. Bronze cutworm larvae feed on the crowns of plants, and large numbers can consume large areas of grass, making it look thin. They can be found in every state except for the Gulf States, Utah, and Wyoming, and their main host plants are grasses, corn, and small grains.
