  Pinochet prevented a civil war. Fact. I met people in exile who openly admitted to manufacturing bombs. They were terrorists. Allende himself encouraged people to take up arms. But somehow in today's narrative this is forgotten. From the outside it seems convenient to malign Pinochet. But that is an ignorant and unrealistic assessment of the larger picture. He brought order, stability and even prosperity. At a price - yes. But much less costly than a civil war, I'm sure.

  I saw this film in Australia when it was released. I have lived 10 years in Chile, through the Left wing Golpe de Estado commenced on 18 October 2019 with the attack on 20 Metro stations in 6 hours. I lived in the epicentre of this unprecedented protest violence, was beaten up for opposing it, threatened three times more, stoned, in the biblical sense for protesting against the violence and lost my livelihood. In 1986,when this film was releases, the FPMR, the armed wing of the Chilean Communist Party, attacked two metro stations on line one. At Tobalaba the killed one person and injured 6. At Metro Los Heroes their ineptitude at their own game meant the second bomb didn't explode. Later the same year, they attempted to assassinate Pinochet but killed fivr civilians instead. This was made into the not so subtlety named Kill Pinochet, released in 2020,in the second year of the Golpe de Estado, or Estallido Social if you prefer. This lived reality made me revisit Bradbury's film that impressed me as a 24 year old in 1986. Like Guzman's Battle of Chile Trilogy, I'm now dumbfounded by such blatant propaganda posing as documentary. In the opening minutes we are told that in the first 4 years of the Dictatorship, 50,000 people were assassinated. We now know that in 17 years it was in fact 3129. This blatant distortion is backed up by the famous "why torture people when you can shot them" comment that equally shocked an 24 year old. We know from theRetig and Velech truth Commissions that 10s of 1000s of people were illegally detained and tortured, and we have a Museum of Memory with the torture equipment to prove it. The murdered and the dissappeared are also documented and there is no dispute about these abuses of human rights. What continually stuns me is that very few people who watch Bradbury's film could name anther Dictator in South America. In Argentina's 6 year Dirty War, 30,000 people were assassinated. Perhaps Bradbury got his wires crossed. Neither Bradbury nor Guzmán discuss 1970 to 1973 in any other than glowing light. Allende's 1000 days of transition to Socialism was via the expropriation of private land and businesses on a scale not seen in South America, the ineptitude of his Governments economic plan the print money and invent jobs in the first year created the hyperinflation and food shortages in the second and third years. The violence of his supporters is perhaps best seen in the rock attack on right wing female protesters opposed to what the Christian Democrats thought was unconstitutional actions by Allende's leading to the failed coup attempt of July 1973after which Allende's appointed Pinochet as Head of the Armed Forces. That Allende's was elected by 36 %of registered voters and that he only formed Government with the support of the Christian Democrats who demanded Allende sign a pledge of alliegence to the Constitutionshows why they withdrew there support and supported the Golpe de Estado of 11 September 1973. None of this excuses the murder or torture, but one has to ask why Bradbury feels it is necessary to multiply these crimes 10, or 15 times. Bradbury's credibility as a documentary film maker is destroyed in the opening scenes. It makes the viewer ask in retrospect of the truth commissions of 1991 and 2005 what ended up on the cutting room floor, and what was never even considered to be filmed on such a cloke and dagger mission of Bradbury. His later films based on music are clearly propaganda. I now like John Denversimpmy because I foolishly hated him in 1986 for his candid reply to an interviewers question. Country Road, take me home

  Lo que puedo sentir por los familiares de los muertos, nunca podra igualarse al de ellos. Pido se me permita expresarles mi solidaridad emocional. No puede haber razon intelectual o religiosa por la cual el ser humano no pueda ser feliz. Sin embargo el mundo aun no ha solucionado problemas raciales, desempleo, grandes injusticias sociales... El mentado avance tecnologico, mantiene dormido e inconciente a muchos. Tal vez para otros, solo les quede el amor, como respuesta a tanto dolor. [Gracias, BDR]
