thank you sooo much!! this was very helpful. my dogs want an encore from your dog 😂😂 i am saving this vid for future reference. i'm trying to make a mid evil style dress... out of 1.5 in squares... with out lining. so lots of tacking on the back. the scraps are from other cloths that i've made. not sure if it's a good idea and i know it will take years but i am PUMPED!!😁😁
That sounds amazing! keep going and make sure to update me with your progress. There are many methods to tack down the underside and leave it unlined. Maybe I need to make a video about that.
How do you back a EPP square?
I sew the squares into a quilt top, add borders, then layer and baste like any other bed quilt.
Do you have a fav “practice” project for learning FMQ???
doodle everywhere. Try all sorts of continuous line patterns-- if you can draw it, you can quilt it!

I'm so happy to see that EPP can be shapes other than hexagons.
You can get pretty creative. Try different grids- square, hexagon, diamond. You can even combine shapes. Thanks for the comment.

I love this. I have a box full of hexagons, ready to put together for grandmothers flower garden. ….. note to self, “get them out again”. I absolutely adore doin tiny whip stitches, always have, taught by mum so that’s probably why. You have inspired me to definitely do more paper piecing. Thanks so much ☺️.

Oh, sorry I misunderstood. I think you mean the fancy stitches on the machine? I haven't tried them more than a handful of times. I'm not very good at it yet.@@mariefrance8132

Thanks Madeline! You can remove the papers once all sides of a patch are sewn to its neighbors. The papers on the edge stay in until you are ready to layer and baste the project. Thanks for watching!

I have the exact same machine. When you FMQ, what settings do you use? I notice that I can't change the stitch length as it stays locked to 3.5. Is that normal?
In free motion quilting your hands and your foot control the Length of your stitches. I haven't tried FMQ with any of the MC 6500 fancy stitches
What is the size of the finished ball? I’m excited to try this, but need to order a couple of things…have only been doing hexes!

After all sides of a shape are sewn, the paper can be removed and reused.

EPP isn't just for hexies! This method is so under rated. No marking, and easier to press later. I use a glue stick for the initial "stick," rather than clips, but also prefer to thread baste. A hole punch in the center of the square helps to get the paper out later. Also, with the basting, and an initial press, I've had excellent results removing the paper BEFORE whip-stitching the shapes together. Sometimes sewing a bigger conglomerate with all that paper is a bit of a drag. Excellent video!

It's an open top, adjustable thimble from Clover.

What is the general rule in thread color selection for needle turn appliqué? Do you try and match top fabrics or bottom fabric?

What setting/mode are you on for free motion? I had a 7700, never had any issue, changed to 6500 a few days ago, not having real problems just not familiar with the machine yet. I put it in Mode 1, stitch setting 1, but I'm used to setting stitch length to zero for free motion and mine won't let me do it in that setting. I bought it from a repair guy who was working on my Juki, looks brand new, was just serviced and has a lot of feet and all that, and I like it, just puzzled about the inability to lower the stitch length in that mode. Have you been able to do fmq with the stitch set to 1.5 or something? The one weird thing is that on the 6500, you DON'T lower the feed dogs to fmq. I broke so many threads until I read that in the manual.
@@lifeunderquilts No, not on the straight stitch setting with my free motion foot on, can't adjust the stitch length setting to anything other than 3.5. I can do it if I'm using the regular piecing foot, but not set up to free motion. I do/did lower my feed dogs to quilt, never heard that. I've been practicing without any issue at all from it. I did have issues with one thread breaking, but it was an older cone of Isacord, always shredding the thread. Had no trouble with cotton or Glide thread, though. I'll have to go back into the manual to see what you mean. In becoming familiar with the machine, I've read through the section on free motion and it doesn't mention it that I saw, but I've always lowered feed dogs to FMQ on all my machines, not sure why this one would be any different. Leah Day, the free motion quilt teacher on KZread, doesn't lower hers, I understand, but I always have. One thing that could lead to breaking your thread is you are sometimes pulling your fabric through the machine rather than pushing it, I noticed. I use the Machingers gloves for better grip and a Supreme Slider on top of the bed and it glides without pulling. You may want to get some silicone spray and slick up the bed; I have it on my list to do for both my current machines if I don't use the slider sheet. Nice colors in your quilt there. I'll have to mess around with the settings and see if I can figure it out. Manuals never answer the questions you want to ask, LOL. Thanks for your reply! (((((Adding that I tried to lower the stitch length and left the feed dogs up and it didn't give me the warning I expected, was able to free motion. Well, never would have guessed that or tried it if you had not mentioned it, thanks! Maybe I figured this out with your help)))

Can you please tell me how you keep the applique so flat and neat looking? I am new to applique and trying to make a hawiian quilt, but sometimes my appliqued piece don't look right at all.
All of my applique pieces are heavily thread basted-- 1/2" from the sewing line and as much more after that as needed. Hope this helps

I love that quilt… I love the size of the blocks and the simpleness of it all… How do you like your machine. I’ve been looking at one exactly like that and I’ve been hoping to find somebody who has one to pick their brain about it… So is your machine is great as I think it is??
I love my Janome Memory Craft 6500. I haven't tried any newer machines though.
👋👋🇨🇦 I’ve just bought one 5 days ago! I love it so far…it’s a workhorse and a dream to sew with. I haven’t tried FMQ just ordered a walking foot and a 1/4 inch foot…they were out of the knee lift. Accessories are a bit more than regular sewing machines because of the 9 mm opening so my older model Kenmore (made by Janome) the feet and accessories are not interchangeable…but the 9 mm width is amazing! The 6700 was one thousand more than my 6650…I’m very pleased so far! Good luck with your decision!! Easter Blessing’s to you!
