Went to high school for one year with Lani Hall - The Bateman School in Chicago. We were both Seniors. I barely remember her and I'm sure she wouldn't remember me from Adam.

Now that you've gotten the white wash version, here's the rest of the story. Herb Alpert, their producer, was interested in Lani (the story is that they were having an affair - his part being extra marital). While the better singer with the bonefides was Janet Hanson (who was a background singer for Andy Williams), she was relegated to backing Lani up. Hanson was the lead singer on their biggest hit, The Look of Love. The whole band revolted against Sergio, who would take a top level hotel room on the road, but put his band up in low level hotels. He went tyrant on them and fired all of them. But Herb talked him into bringing Lani back for his own self interests. Then he thought he and Lani could be stars, so he talked her into jumping ship and going solo. That didn't work out as Herb planned.

Lani Hall is one of the all-time greats. You can tell who influenced her most: Barbara Streisand. And Sergio was and still is a unique and original artist. I graduated high school in 66 and at the time was sick of Herb Alpert being played non-stop on the radio. Brazil 66 was a welcome relief from that, lol.

When I first saw Lani I would he swore that she was Brazilian. I was totally surprised to learn she was from Chicago. Either way, she has one of the most intelligent voices I've ever heard. She speaks, you listen

Her voice is iconic if you grew up in the 60s and your parents always had music playing in the house. I credit my deep love for bossa nova music to Sergio Mendez and Lani Hall. His music and her voice are etched into my soul.

For the youngsters out there in 1966 the age of consent and emancipation from ones parents was 21. You couldn't even vote then.

First heard them as a kid in NJ, really knocked out; then got the treat of actually traveling to Brazil in '68, & realized their music really encompassed the culture I found there. Fantastic.

My dad was a plant supervisor on a little island off the mainland in the Caribbean. I started spending time there as a kid for as long as I can remember. I would take the two hours boat ride to spend many weekends and summer vacations there. In the mid to late 60s, when I was between the ages of, say, six and nine years of age, Sergio Mendes and Brazil 65 & 66 were popular on the radio. His music always takes me back to those times of open ocean, boat rides, beaches, and fun times on a sunny island in the Caribbean. His and all the other popular music of that era definitely helped shape me into who I am today - I am blessed!

I first heard Sergio Mendez and Brazil '77 in Hawaii when I was 14 or 15 years old...and was instantly hooked on Bossa Nova and Jazz. That was almost 50 years ago and this video still gave me chills today. There just isn't music produced like this anymore.
