    Do you have any idea what to substitute the giant flies as?

    I've been thinking about this for a bit. Giant Flies are actually a little creepy so I was thinking maybe crows or something like that. After a while looking around I'm currently thinking I'll go with these very very cheap toy flies. www.amazon.co.uk/Plastic-Simulation-Realistic-Halloween-Outdoor/dp/B0BRPSRMYF they're still flies but as toy flies they're not too creepy. If I wanted I could stick them on bases with paper clips to hold them up and decide if I want to paint them or not.

    There's also a non-zero chance we might see an update to the Skaven rules for the new Skaventide box. As far as I'm aware there's nothing new in there (just new models) so they don't have to, but usually new Warcry rules is a good way to encourage sales, so there's alway hope!

    Five Parsecs had / has three PDF supplements that have been recently compiled into a single new hardback book. The book also includes a standalone 'colonial marines vs alien horde' game called Bug Hunt, which is also the name of this compilation book. The book is also available as PDF. There is currently one PDF supplement for Five Leagues, but another is due out soon. I think both might be bundled together in a hardback book, but I'm not sure about that.

    Very interesting, I've only recently ended up deep reading the Aliens RPG books from Free League Publishing, so I'm definitely on a Bug Hunt vibe.

    @@optimalgamestate I've only skim read Bug Hunt so far, but it appears to work in a similar way to Five Parsecs. The 'crew creation' and advancement / equipping appears to have been trimmed back, but the AI for the enemy has been expanded. So instead of your crew of 6-ish oddballs fighting a similar number of oddballs, your group of 3 officers lead an ever-changing selection of squads against masses of aliens. It looks to me like you average 7-15 people under your command, but of those, only 3 are 'PCs' that develop game-to-game. The rest are NPC squaddies or specialists that get swapped out each time you play.

    People need to realize that once you've bought a game, it's yours. This 'live service' model that seems to be sneaking into tabletop gaming is being imposed by us, the players, and we can abandon it whenever we want to. Once you own models/rulebooks/tokens, they're yours. You can keep playing any edition you want with whatever houserules you want. And those games are often way better. Mordheim is in a fantastic place right now and very much alive and well. GW lost control of Blood Bowl ages ago and they haven't managed to get it back. Sure, they make rules and models for it, but the community decides if they want to use those rules and models. With Age of Sigmar, I have no interest in the new edition. They've managed to dumb it down to the point where, beyond the listbuilding, it's basically Snakes and Ladders. If I can find enough other players, I'd be happy to keep playing 3rd ed with a few house rules. (Or my ultimate dream, Age of Sigmar with MESBG rules...) We also need to see through the illusion that the company making the game has a monopoly on game balance. So often I hear people say "Oh, I don't want to play without the latest rules/FAQ because 'it's not balanced'. Utter garbage, but maybe a discussion for another time.

  • @optimalgamestate
    @optimalgamestate13 күн бұрын

    100% It does make sense to buy into the new edition if everyone you play with is moving to it, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be a better game. My current AoS goal is to finish up my Slaves to Darkness army and for my Brother to finish up his Stormcast army. Playing the out of the box written rules that we already have, so 3rd edition, will work fine for a fun game.

    Yep, there’s been more interest in and discussion of these alternatives to games from the big gorilla in the room. There’s also Rogue Warriors from Tabletop Skirmish Games. Miniatures agnostic system covering “modern combat”, WWII to the present, using small four operative teams. It’s basically player vs player but there’s a solo option as well. Other versions of the same basic rules for sci-fi and fantasy settings are either just out or on the way.

  • @optimalgamestate
    @optimalgamestate15 күн бұрын

    I've seen Rogue Warriors appearing on amazon a few times. Have you had a chance to play it or at least read through the rules? any idea what it's like? Right now the other skirmish game that has my attention is BLKOUT but no distributors outside of the US yet which limits the fun.

  • @earnestwanderer2471
    @earnestwanderer247115 күн бұрын

    Lee, from Tabletop Skirmish Games channel has a number of how to play videos up. The game is pretty simple and focuses on a narrative approach to game play. In addition to the basic rules, there’s campaign modules available. Strangely, the biggest problem I have with the game is the terrain. I’m not an historical gamer, so all the terrain I have is either sci-fi or fantasy themed. To really get the most out of the experience it would help to have terrain pieces appropriate for the WWII, or Vietnam eras. Or maybe Afghanistan/Iraq. A big part of the game involves selecting and equipping you team. Movement is probably the most critical element. Shooting is not super deadly because the game is supposed to feel more like a cinematic combat than a real simulation. Melee combat, on the other hand, is fairly brutal. There’s no option to disengage so every contest is to the death.

    Brings up the rumors Ive seen floating around that Warhammer Underworlds might have a bit of an uncertain future of support from GW. Underworlds has always been more of a game night board game for me, and I couldnt care less about all the Rivals decks and card releases they've been trying to make work; but its hard to argue the Underworlds warbands are some of the most brilliantly sculpted and colorful characters theyve done for Age of Sigmar as a setting. So it would be a real shame if we stop seeing such great models for that game if it slowly gets phased out.

  • @optimalgamestate
    @optimalgamestate18 күн бұрын

    It's a weird one, I've heard the rumour about Underworlds getting dropped for a few years now, often from people I'd usually trust. I do quite like the Rivals deck change they made, but you're right the key part of Underworlds is the amazing line of models they've been producing. I suspect at least parts of the model line are selling well so the game is a 'success' even if attendance at tournaments isn't great for GWs 'ultimate competitive game'. It's a perfect example for what I'm talking about in this video, if you have a few Underworlds warbands you like, get them all together in a box with their decks prebuilt and you'll have a great ready to play no matter what GW might do in the future.

    Cancelled? Poor choice of words. To be cancelled would mean it would have never existed. It means it would have been cancelled meanwhile it was still in development. INSTEAD, what happened, was that Imperial Assault had LOADS and loads of content, big expansions, small expansions, app campaigns, and none of that was cancelled, ALL of it actually launched. So why the hell are you calling it "cancelled"? You mean it just stopped being produced, not cancelled. It was COMPLETE, not cancelled. What is your expectation? They kept launching expansions for Imperial Assault to this day? I don't get it. It's a game we play every month. If it was cancelled, we would never have it, or it would've been a failed kickstarter campaign or something. I hate wheb youtubers do that: "this game is DEAD" "oh it's CANCELLED now" I'm so done with that.

  • @gernorton7166
    @gernorton716620 күн бұрын

    That's a very narrow definition of Cancelled you are working with there. TV shows get cancelled all the time, it doesn't mean they were never made. It's a perfectly normal term for the expected ongoing support of a product or offering to be stopped.

  • @optimalgamestate
    @optimalgamestate20 күн бұрын

    Hey friend. I'm delighted to hear you're still loving Imperial Assault. Hopefully you got far enough into the video to see me showing off my own collection and where I talked about how the game was still being produced but didn't have new product. In relation to the use of 'cancelled', I do feel the usage of cancelled in this context is appropriate. FFG stopped development of the game, but kept it in production. I appreciate that the term 'cancelled' has got caught up in the 'culture wars' , but that's not this channel. I would suggest giving a quick google search for any of the games I talk about in this video and 'cancelled', you'll find lots of people using that same phrasing. That said, since you did go to the effort of posting it's obviously something you feel strongly about. So I've updated the cover and title to use 'discontinued' instead of 'cancelled' (the animated intro remains as it would require a re-upload). I hope you have a great day and keep playing Imperial Assault!

    @@optimalgamestate Fair enough. I understand other people use the term, and that's precicely my point. It has nothing to do with imperial assault, I just took it as an example, I just think this kind of thumbnail is very misleading, is all. I thought it was about lost games that never existe, prototypes, or something I appreciate the change, and sorry if I came out as aggressive, it wasn't the intent. I'm just tiresome to see so many "GAME IS DEAD" "OH STAR WARS ARMADA IS NOW CANCELLED" "OH, X-WING IS DONE FOR, NO ONE IS GOING TO PLAY IT EVER AGAIN", and stuff like that Just like the Warcry drama when "WARCRY IS OVER because they DELETED the original bespoke 1.0 warbands from AOS 4" and stuff like that.

  • @nobribefoul
    @nobribefoul20 күн бұрын

    For a game to continue being played it needs to either have a ton of replayability or organized play support. Kill organized play, you will lose the vast majority of the player-base. If you have a set box and that's it or limited expansions like LCGs it's basically impossible to have prize support. People don't want to admit any of this but you rarely see weekly meetups for card games that are no longer in production. You may see a small tournament at a big tabletop convention or some tabletop sim play but that's likely it.

    If you just want the content other than the miniatures it is usually still cheaper in the end buying the starter box since it is usually never hard selling the teo armies. And the core book alone is about the price of the remainder. Then there is the rest of the goodies if you want to go into spearhead more. Personally ill buy the box and sell the two armies. I wont make a profit but it will be cheaper than buying things seperately later.

    Only about half of the miniatures in the box are from the Spearhead. So it's about 3-4 Spearheads amount of minis (similar to Leviathan having more than two combat boxes). A word on "expensive" : I cannot recall in my 45+ years with Citadel / GW that they were anytime cheap. There were " comparably" cheaper armies then others. But in comparison to, say Mantic, Perry, and the likes, Citadel/GW was always top of the line. And as a hobby, GW games were and are among the most expensive especially considering that all the great minis, the great quality prints become worthless 8ften after a few years due to major changes in the rules, the units profiles or both. So everyone starting with GW games should be clear about that these products typically have a shorter lifespan then, say Kings of War, Bolt Action or most other rulesets and related minis ( see Epic 40k, WHFB, AoS and several 40k editions ). Now with that out of the way, you can buy almost every standard LI Box at online shops ( who often maintain reallive game shops as well ) for anywhere between 32 and 35 EUR instead of 40. The large starter boxsets are available for around 130 instead of 155 EUR. These are all prices from official GW retailers. So this alone saves you at least 100 EUR on a 2k Army...leaving some moneys for terrain, gamemat, paints...😊...have fun with LI as it lasts..I' ll certainly do and write off the 600 EUR I'll spend...

  • @d-rex7043

    If I may... Everyone knows you go 3rd party, unless something is unavailable, but discounts and numbers are region/shop dependent, so it makes sense to refer to RRP in KZread videos/discussion. I also have to disagree on the 'expense' aspect - the prices in the 'modern era' are astronomical, relative to when I, for example, bought the original adeptus titanicus, Man O' War, Ork & Squat Warlords, Blood Bowl, etc with my pocket money, while at primary school. I also had a spell back in 6th/7th and had no qualms forking out for Battleforces and Combat Patrols, which today, would be on par with the 'much lauded', recently de-availablised GSC box (yes, the situation is worth inventing a word for). Until production volumes increase, they seem content knowing that, of all the wider audience now interested in the products, there will always be (at least) just enough who can afford to pay a chunk more, before folding, to sell the limited supply available and keep investors happy.

    Infiltrated Tarantalas and Dreadnaughts are crazy efficient. 68 points for 8 skyfire batteries and you can infiltrate them into a building. This makes a 25" no-go circle in the middle of the board. You are guaranteed to out trade a player who brought fliers by doing that. Dreadnaughts are too slow to get into the game at 5" a turn. Unless they start 4" away, in which case they are mathematically the best shooting and combat unit in the game.

    You're right about the objective and treasure missions being a bit tricky. In the Frostgrave / Stargrave systems Joseph A McCullough uses a 'target point ' for some missions. So if an enemy fighter isn't able to immediately attack a player fighter, then they move towards the 'target point'. For objective missions we could make the objectives points of interest, then add a clause that they won't leave an objective, and that they'll only move towards objectives the AI doesn't already control. You could do similar with Treasure but add the clause that when carrying treasure they will move away from the player fighters. One way or another, it's gonna be pretty dumb XD a good play will have clever plays that we can't really predict with a generic AI. We can adjust for this by giving the AI more points (like I've done with Vermintide). As for future plans, more immediately I do want to get a second Vermintide mission out, but that probably won't get a video. I do have the Ulfenkarn (Cursed City) campaign for Warcry which I've started writing up (there's a Patreon post for it) but I haven't fully developed out yet. I would like that to have AI driven scenarios with the Cursed city villians in set battles. That could be fun. This week I'm probably just going to do the monthly review and work out what to do next!

    Well, this definitely makes a case for collecting heroscape tiles again. Just in time for its most recent iteration release after over a decade OOP. This way you could feasibly use elevation.

    You gotta share if you do this. I really like messing around with hex games (UW, Fireteam, Bladeborne, etc) and have always thought to get Heroscape pieces but never pulled the trigger.

    @@shorelessskies Honestly, dont. The reason being is that the old heroscape tiles are beginning to deteriorate, and those that tell you that they aren't, are trying to sell you their tiles that are rotting. This isnt even remotely hyperbole. They have become brittle, and even with kid gloves handling tiles are now beginning to shatter. So if you buy heroscape tiles, but the new stuff coming out soon so they will at least last two more decades. Because the old stuff is literally falling apart, and is effectively worthless with this countdown to their imminent self destruction.

    the movement rounding at 6:30 is actually awesome to me... its thematic like they are picking up speed as they run.
