Watch me level up on the bagpipes.
Welcome to the Piping Hot Mess KZread channel where I'm documenting my journey of learning to play the bagpipes! Yes, you heard that right - I decided to torture myself by taking on one of the most notoriously difficult instruments out there.
On this channel, you'll find a variety of videos showcasing my progress, including some hilarious videos of me fumbling through tunes and possibly scaring away any nearby wildlife.
As I continue to develop my skills, I'll be sharing my experiences, tips, and tricks that I've learned along the way. But don't worry, I won't be giving up my day job anytime soon!
So, if you want to join me on this awesome journey, hit that subscribe button, and let's make some beautiful noise together!

I love this. Been watching you channel - beginner here.
Welcome aboard! Thanks for your support. I’ll let Floki the cat know!!
Good for you. I'm only 9 months in and struggling with keeping the pipes going, let alone trying to play a tune! So I salute you for going online! How often do you practice and for how long?
Welcome to a fantastic hobby. It’s not the easiest of instruments to learn for sure but it’s very rewarding. I generally aim for at least 30 minutes on the practice chanter and at least 30 minutes on the pipes each day. Often it’s more like an hour on the PC. Saturdays / Sundays are generally a write off.
Great...👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you! Cheers!
Great! Keep at it.
Thanks, will do!
Well done!
Thanks!

I’m getting better, slowly but surely.
Fuck yeah mate!!!
Sweet, mate!!!
Thanks!
👏👏 with the exception of a few e doublings (which is good that you played and understood they are meant to be there) it was properly good sounding playing
Thanks Neil! The journey continues…
pretty clean there!
Thanks. Almost at 2 years now. Here’s to the third!
nice tuning there!
Thanks!
Lone piper my cousin tatoo black watch keep going brilliant
Thanks for your support!
Brilliant
Sounds fine to me!
You should do a video playing a simple tune again such as rowan tree to really see the inprovement in your play
Yes I agree. In fact, I was planning on revisiting some tunes in June for the 2 year mark.
Very nicely played, my friend!
Thanks for listening!
@@PipingHotMess My pleasure! You're an inspiration to me!
Yup, that was me at 19 months too. Thx for the share.
Thanks for watching!
getting steadier ;)
Not bad at all. Keep going.
Thanks man! Will do.
Try playing far far away. Or even further away 😂
hahaha I could try playing over the hills and far away. But I think you might still be able to hear me.
Terrific performance, my friend! You're an inspiration to me!
It’s a work in progress for sure! Thank you for the support :)
@@PipingHotMess My pleasure! Would you like to correspond?
cheers mate, keep it up!
Always!
Thanks for sharing this. I am a beginner Piper and I really love this song. Working my way toward playing it.
Welcome to the club! I hope you have many happy years of piping ahead of you.
What tune will you attempt next?
I have a few I’m working on at the moment. I think the Steam Boat is due to be recorded shortly. Is there anything in particular you’d like to see?
@PipingHotMess You could maybe try all the blue bonnets are over the border may be later though depending on how tricky you find it I suppose
@@NeilSw10 I'll certainly take a look at it!
Walsh pipes…nice! I have the same set and love them! You’re doing great!!!
Thanks Fred! They're a nice sounding set of pipes... at least when they're played by someone who can play well ;)
Thanks my friend! You're an inspiration to me!
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment! It really does help keep me motivated to keep moving forward! Happy Easter.
@@PipingHotMess It's my pleasure, my friend! If you'd care to correspond I would really enjoy it! Happy Easter to you, too!
you are improving mate!
sounds like cats fightin'
Unsure if you think all bagpipes sound like cats fighting or just mine? I can't help you with the former lol, but I'm working on the latter ;)
Pub ready my friend!
He sees himself in the camera and stops to investigate! He's great, but a wee headbumping distraction!
What reed are you using?
Hi there! I have a Fraser Warnock reed in the PC.
getting faster mate! great job!!
Thanks! I do feel like I could have played this little slower and cleaner.
your truly focussing on nice embellishents, great job!
Thanks Bruce!
Very good. I'm 4 weeks into the journey...first lesson next week. I hope to be doing this by 14 months!
Welcome to the party! It's a wonderful instrument to learn with so many awesome tunes. Glad to hear you're getting lessons. My teacher has really helped keep me on track. I hope you have many years of happy piping ahead of you!
Well done!
Thanks! This one had me tying myself in pretzels. It’s not where I’d like it to be but it an honest attempt.
it indeed is a special journey of discipline, patience and skill.
You got it Bruce.
very nice embellishments! clearly played nice open gracenoting. how much are you practicing a day?
Thanks man! Right now I’m an hour on the PC and 2 x 30 min sessions on the pipes.
I've really enjoyed watching your videos and I have seen the wonderful progress you've made during your piping journey. It's very impressive and I truly admire your dedication and determination. You've become a motivating source of inspiration to me and I'm sure many others. Is your practice chanter blackwood? It looks like a McCallum but only guessing here. Anyway, please keep up the great work!
Thank you @eanderson723! It’s been a wild ride over the past year and a half and I appreciate your support. You have a good eye. It is indeed a McCallum Blackwood chanter and was a wonderful birthday present from my wife. Happy Piping!
throws are really spot on!! birls are fantastic. Onco you get the speed you will become great!! ik ignore that it doesnt sound so crisp.yet. it will Come with time. stick to this technique mate!! it will become your playstyle
Thanks! Things are slowly moving in the right direction. Hope you have a happy new year full of excellent piping.
your starting to get the hang of it!
great
Thanks!
very good mate! 😊
Oh aye! That were grrreat!
Thanks I appreciate the love!
Enjoyed this man , thanks !
My pleasure. Thanks for listening!
Play right
Working on it!
way WAY better!! very strong start on the throw but after that your off beat. try using a metronome 😊
very nice doublings! your grips and throws need work.
Thanks for the advice! Anything in particular I should be focusing on with them? Eg., more low G on the throws?
If i can be very precise for what i can see in order of priority: 1. embellishment speed, you should become more comfortable with the embellishments. this is a matter of Basic scales playing over and over until you get sick of it and speeding it up slightly over time. 2. Crisp gracenoting. Your gracesnotes are really, REALLY big. try playing them as if you are having magnets in your fingers which attract them to your chanter. (Pull up fast and short then explode back) This will make the tune sound WAY better real Quick. 3. Watch the beat. Try to start the embellishments at the right time. Ec doublings ON the beat and not before it. get the book rithmic fingerworks play the exercises of that book over and over every day for about 15 min with the audio recordings next to it, then when you get the hang of it use only a metronome really slowly. This helped me a lot. I will upload a video for you today in which i record my scales on pipes (just got past my 1000 hour practice mark last wednesday so i should make a New video for progress.. i will make 2. one Just for you with the exercises and my standard every day warm up routine. i think you will.find it very valueable. 😊
Thanks Bruce! I appreciate the thoughtful reply. That's very helpful advice!!
