What are we playing Wednesday??? I wanna play! Also, I'm a game master at big game night, come to my table! See y'all there 😊
Not sure. I would love to get a game of Battlestar in, but not sure I can get 5. Want to join us for the Weber Grill kickoff dinner at 6:00 PM?
@LegendsofNerdvana I've been waiting for this video! I'll be glad to play Battlestar and maybe my son will too if it is later like 9 pm.
I'm also looking for something to do late Saturday night if I know where you will be and you need players.
We will typically try to grab a table in the JW Marriott ballroom but last year we ran into problems trying to find an empty table.
I only pre-ordered from Board & Dice and Hachette too, Randy! We have very similar tastes!
Thanks for the video and discussion!
Thanks for watching! Glad that you enjoyed!
Good Conversation. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for watching! Glad to have you visit!
Heroes' special abilities only fire off after they spawn during their Show Off step, and never again. So you would never encounter an archer trying to shoot out of the central vault room. It's not a spawnpoint. If you were giving the heroes extra "show off" activations then that might explain why you struggled with difficulty! Great review, glad you enjoyed it despite the difficulty. This is our #1 game at the moment. We love it
Thanks for the clarification. I think we were doing a full activation when they readied.
Love the hats!!
This was a fun game! Enjoyed playing this with you.
The honesty and detail in your reviews is genuinely appreciated.
Thank you! We try to be fair and open and remove as much bias as possible when reviewing. Thank you for watching!
Is it me or was there a lack of worker placement this time around. Maybe waiting for Essen. Good luck with job hunt.
No, I think you are right. Of course Gen Con is where most releases happen but even the BGG Gen Con preview does not feature many worker placement games. There are a ton of card games.
Thanks for this review. I like your style of review. I might still get this game, cos I can get it for £15.
Thanks for watching! I hope that you enjoy the game!
Glad y'all are having fun.
Time flew by! Now back to the weekly grind.
@@LegendsofNerdvana Unfortunately it does fly by when your having fun.
Howdy Legends! Can't make Origins this year, sadly! I hope you have fun if you go and I can't wait for the vids and news! See you at Gen Con! You are the best!!! ❤❤❤❤
We’ll miss seeing you Rob! We have lots of meet ups slated so we should have a lot of information on upcoming games!
Nice to hear your thoughts on this one. I own this game and, so far, I’m having a great time with it! Lots of interesting card abilities that interact with each other in different ways.
I enjoyed it when I demoed the game, but getting a game with attacking in it to the table is difficult in our house. Glad that you are enjoying it! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thks for this great review🎉
The same elemental can't use 2 attack commands on the same turn. They can only attack once.
Thanks for the clarification and for watching!
Thanks for the great review! For the neoprene mats, I recommend you spread them out more so there is space between them for the treasure hunters to be placed (like the back of the deluxe box shows). Then you don’t have to place them on the edge of the mat ever (either in the middle of a mat or between the mats).
It is such a beautiful game! Thanks for the feedback and for watching!
❤ New subscriber here! I love board games and I love your channel! I actually found your channel with this review :) Looking forward to exploring your previous views and or course watching upcoming ones 🎉
So glad to have you with us! Thanks for messaging and subscribing!
I loved the original game by itself. When you add the expansion, Unfinished Business, to the original game, you can't stop playing. It is an amazingly fun game to play. Try Star Wars Rebellion, too. Very fun games.
I felt that the base game was intentionally left missing content but agree that it is still fun. I have Rebellion, but have never gotten it to the table. It is not the kind of game my wife likes to play. Perhaps one time when Robert is in town I will be able to learn it with him. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
@@LegendsofNerdvana I have the expansion for Rebellion but haven't added it yet. The expansion to Outer Rim really puts the game to completion. Even with only original set, it was alot of fun. I suggest Lord of the Rings Journeys in Middle Earth. Great game but hard. You need a laptop to download the app, though.
@@LegendsofNerdvana there is a solo mode on BGG if you're brave enough
I really wanted to like this one more... part of my issue could be them being almost a year late on fulfillment 😂. It seemed like I could take a turn and get 10-12 resources but not be able to use them to build OR set myself up to build and not get any resources to do it. There are cards and abilities that allow you to get around that but I need to find a way to get the stuff to build those cards first! Lol ... the gameplay to me was not interesting enough and frankly kinda boring. Second the fact that all of the action took place in one area as that's where everyone's minions were. I agree with Randy that that's something that will happen every game for sure. Neither here nor there, I did enjoy that in the solo mode your racing against a mad scientist building a machine. And their machine builds into a cool picture as they progress their 4x4 grid. Very cool to watch as it's getting built. (To be clear, didn't enjoy the solo mode, just the picture being built lol) Thanks for the review gang, see ya at Gencon?!
We will be at Origins and Gen Con! Looking forward to seeing you Tah!
love it! the theme really is a lot of fun
It absolutely is! It made most of our pics for Top 10 Games Reviewed in 2023!
@@LegendsofNerdvana us too!!! it's a really good game
Where'd the table go? Lol.....
Right?!
I think it is behind the couch.
@@LegendsofNerdvana Glad you were able to find it. 🤣
The big board with the ships is kinda secondary. 95% of the strategy and actions occurs on the smaller village/dice board. That seems like a strange design to me. Trade is way more rewarding than raids. In about 8 game where I focused on raids and my opponent went for trade I ended up easily 50-100 points behind even if I activated all 6 raids tiles and did one raid in Francia.
Agreed. It does seem that trade pays out better overall. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for your tutorial and review. I’m a big fan of Ticket to Ride standalone games and expansion maps although I haven’t played them all. Started looking for similar games and stumbled upon On the Underground. I just order and unboxed New York/Paris Deluxe version. Deluxe version comes with the mini-expansion solo play card deck. Looking forward to my first play of New York with a slightly different rule set then Berlin or London.
Glad that we could help you make your decision. I hope you enjoy the game! Thanks for watching!!
I agree that the price point sucks, for sure. If I didn't get it through accumulated store credits at my FLGS, I wouldn't have even considered it. And I'm personally neither here nor there with AI generated art... I can see where people are coming from being upset about it, I guess, but that's where we're headed as a society, unfortunately. Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate good game art, but at the same time, I'm more focused on gameplay when I make a purchasing decision. With that being said, the gameplay is spot on for what I like in my games. It's rather simple to teach and plays 5 in like 75 min for my group. It checks boxes that I need it to. It's nothing groundbreaking but one I'm happy to have in my collection.
Totally agree with you Tah. I enjoyed the gameplay and I am glad to own it.
I will not support this game with the bloated price, small amount of components and AI gemerated art. Let's also remember these components still come from china at a cheap rate but yet board prices are continuing to increase. Unfortunately this won't be the only company charging a premium for these tyoes of games. Thanks for the review!
It is such a shame they listed the game at this price point. Glad that you joined us!
Read up on Salton sea. This game should be burned for what it leaves out. Incredibly misguided release from Devir. Ecological disaster, animal deaths, child deaths and still, constant suffering in the area. you should not be promoting this garbage.
I appreciate your concern for the environment and societal impacts. We are a board game review channel and review the content of the game and overall gameplay. We do not generally review the subject matter, though I did mention my concern in the video about how "clean" the energy production really is given the mining and such. While I definitely am not an expert on Salton Sea, I will absolutely look into the history associated with the region. There are often games we cover with themes or political stances that I find objectionable. For example, one of my favorite games is Axis & Allies--I obviously do not condone nor support the history of the Nazi regime but can appreciate the game for its gameplay. I should also point out that we do not promote any particular games. We are not paid for endorsements--we simply play games and give our thoughts on them. No game is perfect for everyone.
I’ve really enjoyed this game already played it 20 times and it’s great solo
I don't typically play solo but this one I might have to try.
Hiya Randy -- Had a great time playing with you in the starving artists guild. I enjoyed your creativity in the naming of your creations. One of my favorite moments was when we were commissioned to make all the street lights fancy. I did not roll a 6 and they were fancy, but were now strobe lights. I'll keep an eye out for your murder mystery at Gen Con this year.
Hey! I had a blast with my starting artist crew! I am not going to be running a mystery at the convention this year, but hope to host one in Louisville (well New Albany) in the not too distant future. Perhaps I will get one in place for Halloween!
That is “starving” not “starting,”.though with my talent level it could be either. :)
It sounds like you had a really good time. I’m glad to hear it. I loved hearing your stories. Just a few quick clarifications for you though: I’m not the designer. This amazing design belongs to Trenton Greyoak. It’s definitely the most LARP-like game that we do - it’s very freeform and player driven. Something like Den of Wolves or Gods of the Ancient World or It came from… The Skies!!! are much more procedural and have more mechanics (some are role dependent). Our control team for Deephaven was about a 7:1 ratio which is fairly typical. The game is specifically designed to be tongue-in-cheek. Glad that came through for you all. The after-party is a must. It’s where you get to hear all those stories you missed out on the day and can chat with the control team about the behind-the-scenes. At Gen Con 2024, the Dukes are putting on 3 megagames but we’re part of (and co-organizers for) the Megagame Coalition and collectively, we’re putting on 17 games! Over the past couple of years, Gen Con now offers a portal to allow GMs to communicate with players before the game which is super necessary for a successful megagame or murder mystery. And sadly we’ve had to cancel our Ohio game this year due to poor turnout.
Thanks for the clarifications/confirmations!
I forgot about this game! I still have mine and it's in the same condition.
It is such a good game for its time!
Thanks for playing it with us Robert. It was a great game.
Hello. Good review and honest, to tell you the truth. I have a question, if it is possible to have an answer.... What about the mention in the solo rules where talk about a specific 2 player setup (especially regarding the lower row space occupied). I didn't found any mention of 2 player setup specific..... Thanks hello.
Let the girl talk.
8 and 7.5, not bad because it looks crazy to get set up. Agreed about the beautiful look, though. Nice one for the like up top.
Thanks for the comment and for watching! It definitely merits a few plays once on the table to justify the set up.
I'll be sure it's an event then lol@@LegendsofNerdvana
Have you played this more since your review and have your thoughts changed any? Thanks
Not yet. Given that it is such a short game I may try to get it back to the table this weekend now that we are getting over the plague.
@@LegendsofNerdvana we find drafting 3 dice each per round a better experience.
dwarven forge makes ttrpg items, not games....
You are certainly correct that this deluxe version has tremendous component quality. The game play is unique and distinguishable from the many games that repeat the same mechanisms over and over. The game play will not satisfy those looking for a crunchy strategic experience, but will thrill those looking for simple fun in a truly notable setting.
Totally agree. Thanks again for your insightful commentary!
Hello and many thanks for this nice video and honest review about Redwood :-)
Thank you for releasing such a beautful, unique game!
Sounds like Dinosaur Island RAWR and Write is still the way to go.
I preferred Dinosaur World to RAWR and Write, but then we have so many great roll & write games it is hard to compete. RAWR and Write is certainly the less pricey option.
@@LegendsofNerdvana No kidding? Even with the production issues? That's good to know. I won't write it off just yet. Btw, have you tried Starship Captains or In the Hall of the Mountain King? Both are excellent.
Yep. We reviewed Starship Captains on the channel. We have not gotten around to reviewing In the Hall of the Mountain King yet.
@@LegendsofNerdvana it's a good one
I'm getting this game... thanks to you two.... 😂
Great to hear that we cost you more money Tah! :)
@LegendsofNerdvana Update: we like it a lot! It's good!g!
The French Quarter is something to see. It definitely has its own character. I was looking at this game at our local store. My concern, colorblindness with the player sheets. Can you speak to this? Otherwise, I like the idea of this one.
I don't think colorblindness should be an issue. Everything is driven by icons on the scoresheet. The only colorblindness issue I could see is matching the dice with the mode of travel, but as long as you are pulling the card with the die I don't think that will impact gameplay.
@@LegendsofNerdvana Good to know. The game looks good.
@@LegendsofNerdvana It seems to be getting quite a few complaints on bgg about the graphic design layout on the sheets claiming it's unplayable. Any idea why they are saying this?
It looks like some people are complaining about the small font size on the printed pages. The designer has released a printable copy with larger fonts for use by those who struggle with reading g the print. None of us ran into issues with the building fonts, but if you struggle with reading small print I could see where there could be an issue.
@@randyw6463 thanks
Good job, Rob and Randy! I just picked this one up and I am excited to try! Take care!
It is such a beautiful game! Enjoy!
Sounds like it’s going to be fun. And thanks for the beard comment….
I'm not trying to difficult, but are there any games you did not like?
There definitely are. We try to carefully screen our collection before we acquire them, but a few have slipped through the cracks. The Shining was brought to our home by a friend and ranks as one of our worst games we played. We also took a lot of flak for our negative view of Bees. We also did not care for The Forgotten Kingdom and Floating Markets, nor the Last Airbender game. More recently was Forge, which we felt was more of a prototype than a fully finished game. We try to be fair on our coverage of games and scale them in comparison to our benchmark of base Catan as our 5 and remove as much personal biases for or against a specific style of game as we can. Thus you won't find me reviewing many solo nor co-operative games, Maranda and Rob generally won't review many hidden traitor games (one genre I personally love).
@@LegendsofNerdvana Thank you and good to know. I'm doing a better job of screening and have more hits than misses.
Thanks for reviewing my game!! The bonuses do get better down the track - sort of! But their respective value all depends on where you are and what you need at the time. Of course it also varies with the value of the dice that are rolled and the bonuses are positioned to balance against the value of the dice that are likely to be there. So the additional movement always comes with the lowest value dice, whereas the 'Atlas' bonus which allows you to turn corners when you move is often beside a 5 or a 6. As for complexity, you are absolutely correct that the 2 player map is designed to be simple to play for novice games, with the challenge being in the area control of the Area Cont-roll and write! I am currently playtesting a larger map that is set to be a stretch goal, and adds several additional mechanics. Thanks again!
Thanks for designing such a cool roll & write and letting us get a sneak preview of the game!
@@LegendsofNerdvana Cool? Ice cold even!
I just got the deluxe version of the game! I can’t wait to try it out on my next game night!
Are you an Alice fan like me? I have always loved Lewis Carroll's amazing characters from all of his books.
@@LegendsofNerdvana yes! I love Alice and Wonderland! So a great movie
You are not the only one I am following board game wise - but in this particular case - you are the only ones left me in the dark after gameplay section - would have no idea how game plays - room for improvement here
Thank you for the feedback. We try to give an overall feel for the gameplay (though generally not a full walkthrough), but are sorry that this review did not provide enough coverage. We appreciate the response and your support and always work to improve our content.
6:20 you talk about mismatched color, but they arent supposed to match. They are complimentary. Check out page 7 of the rule book to see which color boards go with which tray.
Thanks. I am aware that was the intent. The color selection is just not what we would personally have chosen.
$49-$50! I can do $49, but $50?
Take out a loan for that extra $1. :)
I really enjoyed this one.
Glad that you liked it! I enjoyed it as well. I just wish there was a bit more to the game.
