So glad I found your channel! I love the quality and detail, alongside the visuals on these documentaries
Incompetent leadership killed a lot of people
That lady from the church probably saved at least a dozen lives. The captain and crew were to busy to give safety instructions. So she did instead (albeit in a blunt and DIY way.) And all of them at least loosening those life jackets for flotation saved lives. If those things had still been fastened, I'd bet several people either wouldn't have made it to the top, or wouldn't have lasted long enough to be rescued. That lady from the church is a goddamn hero.
Since listening to you, Sam, I have come to really, really learn that we MUST follow the rules. I will share this story with my grandchildren (and anyone else) to teach them!
Thank you for your research and video. Thank you for being fair in your reporting !! I thought it was strange that a captain with so much experience would sink...but your commentary explained that. I always want to hear what the NTSB has to say!.
Huh, I really thought this wreck was caused by the cargo shifting. I guess it's because that's what the news channels at the time were speculating, and there was no reason for them to report on the actual cause when the report came out two years later and the wreck was no longer exciting news.
How could this happen in an advanced country like South korea
Thank you. Very good presentation.
While this video focuses on the tragic loss of life at sea, it would have been interesting to hear a comment about the fact that to this day there is a nuclear reactor lying at the bottom of the ocean...
I served on the Conifer, and two of the casualties had just graduated from boot camp with me, Foxtrot Cape May NJ.
Why did all of these vessels show up only to circle around a sinking ship with children on board to do nothing to help with search and rescue😮 why??? I can't imagine how horrible for parents to have to go through this, again question is why😮??
Even in a small twin engine helicopter, I legally had to calculate my center of gravity beside every takeoff and ensure it would still be within limits at landing weight.
I wouldn’t work on one of these ships for $100,000 a year.
Coast Guard Veteran here... When my Brother's tell you this was the worse weather they had encountered... that pretty much say's it all. The HH-60 crew with survivors onboard, probably only made it back by pure luck, the grace of God, being very smart, and highly trained. They would tell you as I would... it wasn't the success of the mission... The thing that remains the most poignant....is the loss. Men will go down to the sea, Mother Nature still rules all.
No shortage of heroism by the crew members and rescue teams in the face of danger. It's the complacency during the calm that sows the seeds of disaster, together with the profit-driven corporate decision making. As is always the case, safety procedures that help today's crews navigate dangerous seas safely are written in blood. The video was quite detailed and informative again, and entertaining and touching as well, thank you.
God, thats hard to listen to. Those poor guys were fighting for their lives in those few minutes. So sorry for them and their families. God bless them all.
we barely get land drilling. ocean drilling is still so much worse. you think the water might stop the fire. but it doesnt. on land you can run if lucky. on a rig. you risk two equal horrid ends. burn. or drown. may rah have mercy on these souls
Poor Baxter 😢 Condolences to Captain, glad for those who survived
"unsinkable" Never..ever say that...
He didn’t leave that guy at the end…
Worker on her sister Alaska Warrior and Alaska spirit
I was on the shore at my ex-boyfriend's parents' house and saw these people go by, and we waved at each other. This happened moments after. I'll never forget this. <3
and Blackthorns derelict CPT? a letter or reprimand...that's it
Quality documentary, immediately subscribed
The fact that ODECO had the warning by 1330 makes my blood boil
The rescue swimmers are literally such bad asses dude
2024 😢❤🙏🏻
Very good man
This story is ironic at the least...
God bless our coast guard great job captain on the mayday call.
… to me it sounds like he didn’t care if he was unalived due to not getting a promotion .. it seemed like he wanted to prove he was THAT GUY and make them decide to give it to him since he didn’t know he was already rejected. I feel so bad for all the families friends and etc in the comments. Your stories broke my heart
It's crazy that you can do everything right and still end up in a situation like this.
This is a hollywood movie in the making. Epic. Truly brave coastguard efforts by remarkable heroes.
This is a heroic rescue effort. Those rescue swimmers are legends. Great video.
I used to live in Philly, I always hated these stupid boats, my cousin visited and she wanted to go on one of these, I caved and we went on one - I hated it, was nervous the whole time. That was July 6th, the day before this incident occurred. Crazy.
Seeing the stories from people in the comments broke my heart. They should be getting lawsuits for waiting so long. “Surprise panic”… sounds like they were told it was a drill or something until the very end ..
Well done respectfully.
I had to stop watching as soon as they mentioned there was a dog on board. This made me sick.
The blackthorn captain leaving an ensign in charge on his first assignment was negligent at best.
I have watched your video several times. It's mesmerizing & outstanding. It never seems to get old. Having lived in SE Florida my entire adult life; I can't understand this ship's captain being so reckless and/or indifferent with respect to a very dangerous hurricane. Obviously he didn't care about the lives of his crew, but one would expect him to care about his own. No job is worth your life; nor anyone else's either.
I remember when this happened, I was in college at the time, but to actually learn the details about what happened makes it even more horrifying.
Interesting fact, Thresher wasn't stricken from the Navy Rolls-Royce is listed as still on patrol.
God bless the Coast Guard. God bless Alaska fisherman. God, please bring back the fish. We’re hurting up here in Alaska. On a sidenote, at 1:09:23 did anybody else notice the electrical arc on the aircraft winch cable?
The fact that 2 foreign nations offered helped, and the government literally declined the offer.. it just sickens me... The U.S Navy and The Japanese Coast Guards were literally so prepared to help with the recuse especially with a wide open window of time to recuse all of them. So Furious.... To the point Civilians had to do the recuse themselves is just so embarrassing and shame to the government!
My mechanic father were watching one of these operate, he said they were dangerous pieces of *!#@ and were basically cobbled together from scrap parts and built to the cheapest possible price and expected to be lost in action.
I Love your NTSB op eds. When others don't use them, I feel like I was cheated. You are a delight to me because I love learning.
As a guy who graduated with a Masters degree in Homeland Security Studies at Sam Houston State University, it pains me to see that America’s infrastructure has not improved significantly. It enrages me to see that this country has not done enough in critical infrastructure protection.
Grandfathered in. Endagandering lives in whatever industry its spoken.
