    I'm a huge fan of the Bay of Fundy mulch and use it every year for weed control as plants are establishing and ground covers grow in. It's awesome because amends and add nutrients to the soil and actually decomposes into the beds rather than needing to be raked out and cleaned up in the fall in and spring. It's more expensive and it's 100% worth it! If you use a landscaping service, you don't have to let them talk you into using the using traditional (often dyed) mulch - it's easier for them, but you'll get a lot more value out of using Coast of Maine. It also feels good to use a product that's a preferred environmental choice and comes from right here in New England. Highly recommend. Thanks Domina's for carrying it! :)

    I have a planter pond on my deck, it holds 65 gallons. I'm in Minnesota, the previous 2 years I have brought my 4 goldfish indoors, this year I'm leaving them out because they stink. I purchased a floating heater that keeps a hole in the ice and I run an aerator as well. What I'm worried about is the -10 degree days we get here. Do you think it could freeze solid with those 2 measures in place? Thanks.

  • @dominasagway
    @dominasagway6 ай бұрын

    We’ve never tested it so not quite sure. But definitely don’t use an energy efficient heater because it won’t keep up. You would need a 1200 watt heater to have any chance to keep them alive. Keep us posted, I’m curious to see what happens. Thanks!!

    I use a heated pet dish in the winter for birds to drink from. They can't bathe in it, but can drink. I put a concrete bird bath nearby and remove the frozen ice when possible as the temperature warms up during the day for the birds to bathe in it. It works for the birds in my yard.

  • @dominasagway

    Hi Ellen, We run auto dosing systems until there is danger of freezing. When that is depends on where you’re located here in southern Rhode Island. But usually our clients will run them until Thanksgiving.

    Northeast NY Got super cold just today! But I know temps will still come back up and down etc. Leaves dumped from the huge oaks in my yard, just put a fish net across my 7 ft x 11 ft pond. Next day a clean cut right across the pond through the net! $25 down the drain. The heron here is relentless! What to do?? I’m sick of spending money on nets that the heron easily cuts through. So today I purchased a big roll of pliable plastic construction fencing. It’s a bit harder to cut through this material. Ugh! Hope it works. I have many hiding places in the pond pvc pipes elbows etc. I have 2 caves several hiding spots etc. we’ll see. But so frustrating!

  • @dominasagway
    @dominasagway7 ай бұрын

    It seems like you were doing all the right things to protect the fish. I think the issue is you simply need a better quality net. We deal with mink and heron all the time. We use Aquascape pond netting and have not had any issues with them cutting a new net.

    What should I use?

  • @dominasagway
    @dominasagway Жыл бұрын

    Use insecticide dust or diatomaceous earth around the base of the plants. They spend the day in the mulch and climb up the plant at night. So that way you don’t have to apply poison to the plant. Just the ground around it.

    My friend has 3 koi fry in a aquarium and they started attacking a plant all of a sudden. They started to ferociously tug at it and almost ripped it out by the roots. It was hilarious at first but I'm kinda wondering if there’s reason for concern. 😅

    Before you go to bed set out a can of tuna, tuna removed. Add in cooking oil half way with some bacon grease or soy sauce. Dig the can into the dirt to make crawling in easier for the earwigs. They get it and can’t get out. In the morning dump them out and start again the next night. This took about 4-6 days and I greatly reduced the population without using anything to harm my animals or beneficial insects. Dog will eat the oil traps so make sure they can’t get to it. Earwigs literally destroyed my veggie garden in a week. So frustrating!!!

    Use common sense. When it gets below freezing and birds get wet, their wings/feathers will freeze. Most of the time they'll take baths in snow. If you choose to heat water keep obstructions in the bird bath like rocks to prevent them from getting in to take full baths. Birds have survived for alot longer than bird baths have been around...so please use common sense.

  • @christopherwheeler688

    I would say that if your birdbath is just a bowl with no contour to give a shallow edge where the birds can stand to drink, it's a badly designed bird bath. You probably bought it because it looks nice but didn't give much thought to how it would work for the birds.

    I have a small fountain for the tiny birds that is really shallow as well as a traditional round birdbath for the larger birds that I have and I used de-icers in each of them exactly like the Heated Rock one shown in this video and they work well. Never get frozen water and the birds are happy for a fresh drink and fresh water to bathe.

    Great video. I like the mesh raft. I have slider turtles in my Koi Pond. Do you still recommend lining the river rocks? As turtles are so messy it seems like their waste would find new homes at the bottom and it would be harder to maintain the pond.
