High score channel and videos on BBC Micro and Acorn Electron games from back in the 80's and very early 90's. Most of the footage is from the high score competition in the Stardot Forums. Games that are played by someone who knows how to play them, rather than a reviewer that plays the games badly (which is what I tend to see more often than not).

Incredible work
Thank you 🙂.
I remember finishing this. Such a fantastic, but tough, game. Don't think I got the crowns though.
I had this on Acorn Electron
Great playthrough cheers. The secret room (18:50) appears to be giving clues to three of the puzzles...if you look at each horizontal row you'll see the cannonball and powder flask next to the cannon (for entry to the lab)...the cooked chicken is on the same row as the yellow bull head (for entry to the temple)...and the light-blue bone is next to the witch (the cauldron is also shown in the middle of the screen). Amazing to learn the author was only 19 when he designed the game. :) All the best.
Thanks, Dave 👍. The secret room does give a little bit away come to think of it. I use it as a short cut back to the main area and I've known about it since my Electron days. I screwed up by losing far too much energy the other time I used it though (it's easy to get stuck in the wall if you're not careful). I reckon I could definitely complete the game with 400+ energy left. It is impressive that the author was so young, especially as the game is so polished. All the best.
@@VengerVideoGamer Thanks for your reply, agreed it has the polished (and well play-tested) feel. My only criticism (nit-pick) was the lack of clues to the whereabouts of the two crowns accessed by jumping into the walls (cellar and witches house), perhaps we missed something (e.g. hinting at the room's co-ordinates, or using the two round barrels as giant x-ray specs). Still an amazing game:)
Awesome! Great to see this in 2024
Yeah, this game is brill. Nearly 40 years on and it's still very playable.
@@VengerVideoGamer was Hunchback on the Micro? I'm sure l played that and a Robin Hood game.
@@DnBclassictunes yeah, Hunchback was on the BBC. I had an Electron when I was a kid and it was on one of the Play it Again Sam compilations. The Robin Hood game may have been Gisburne's Castle.
When I was a kid I remember getting up at 4am in the morning to play this before school, it was THAT good! Memories of a lifetime. Superior Software could do no wrong in my eyes! What a game. Oh and the prize money IF you found all three crowns! Brilliant game!
@cowboycrunchies Superior Software was, by far, the best software house to produce games for the BBC and Electron. There were a couple of other notable companies, such as Audiogenic, Tynesoft, Acornsoft and the 4th Dimension (towards the end of the 8 bit era). Citadel has got to be one of my all time favourite games though.
@cowboycrunchies For some reason, I can see your reply about Mousetrap on my notifications but it hasn't appeared on the comments here. I didn't find Mousetrap that hard. I've got a walkthrough of it on this channel too.
I loved this game on my acorn electron. I never completed it so this is deeply satisfying to watch!
I bought this on the Electron, when it first came out, from Boots. What a great game 👌.
Been playing this tonight. Managed to die on the second to last screen…due to a silly mistimed jump. Took about 1hr 18mins ish to that point. I’ll try again tomorrow! Been decades since I last completed this!
I think it was at least 30 years since I last played this, before this effort. Some numpty in another thread was basically calling me a liar when I said I used to regularly complete it with hundreds of energy left. There are some idiots about.
@@VengerVideoGamer I had 40 energy on the last screen with the moving blocks then made a right hash of it! I had died on the same screen a few times in the past. I basically bricked it!!!
@@VengerVideoGamer Tbf dude, this was no easy task! Well done
This and Repton 2 were my favorite games of all time. I was 14 when this was released. I did complete it after many hours. I went on to Castle Quest after this which I thought was much harder and then on to Exile which was a massive game back then.. Superior Software did make the best games!
I had all the Repton games but I wasn't the biggest fan of the franchise. I still haven't played Castle Quest as I don't think it came out for the Electron, back in the day. Exile was superb. I totally agree that Superior Software was the best software company for both the BBC and Electron.
Cropped up in my feed... great gaming - this looks insanely hard!
Thank you, Ben. It's not so bad when you know where all the keys and objects are and know where to use them. I've probably played the game hundreds of times over the years, so it's 2nd nature to me (although I hadn't played it since my teens before this run).
Hi Thank you for uploading this this game was the first game I really remember i think I was around 8 year old when I played it and I still love this game
No problem 🙂. It's a great game and a pleasure to play. I was 11 when it first came out.
The only game I ever completed, I was so sad I even drew a map of the entire environment… which my mum still has! Second best game to Elite.
It's a great game, and even to this day it's one of my favourites.
Played this on my Spectrum console and yeah it's tough
There are a couple of versions on the BBC Micro. This one was programmed by @trickysoft a couple of years ago and tries to stay as true to the arcade game as possible.
@VengerVideoGamer oh yep indeed I've played the BBC Micro version too and weirdly it's a lot easier than the Spectrum version
I remember this game it took me a while to complete it but the frustrations at times lol
Yeah, it is a frustrating experience at times. I hope it doesn't come up again in the high score competition on the Stardot Forums again. We're playing Arcadians at the moment.
@@VengerVideoGamer cool 😎
ok
Nice run, I had as much trouble on level 16, for me it's too many moving parts to react to.
Thanks mate. I have made it past, using the password system, but it's very much a matter of luck. Unfortunately I couldn't string it together on one run.
nice
Thank you 🙂.
I can tell that the ghosts do not follow the same movement algorithm as the arcade.
Muito bom o sagat
Obrigado!
Gameplay is great but what' s with the aspect ratio ? o.O
I never did understand the aspect ratio debate. I just play the game as it comes. I'm an old school gamer (I mean I've been playing video/computer games since the late 1970's) and it just doesn't bother me. After all, some of the earlier games I've had on the Acorn Electron, for example, weren't even played on a monitor, but on a TV (in the early days, a black and white portable TV!).

I don't like how all versions of this game, unoficial or not, insist in only giving you an extra life once through the entire game.
I can understand the arcade game only giving you one extra life; they were in the business of taking our money so they obviously didn't want games lasting too long. I think what Tricky's done here is to faithfully recreate the arcade game as best he could, and to be fair I think he's done an excellent job.
@@VengerVideoGamer Just because the arcade does something doesn't mean it's always good. Having an option to gain extra lives could be nice. Besides, the BBC Micro was no arcade anyway.
@@mrmadmight266 you're right in that it's not always good but the BBC game tries to emulate the arcade game as best it can. The game has to be challenging too; if you had too many extra lives then it wouldn't be as challenging. Saying that, in later levels, eating a power pill has absolutely no effect at all, so that's challenging enough! You're right about the BBC not being an arcade machine, it was more of an educational computer that was used in schools in the 1980's but it could also produce half-decent games (for the time) even though it only had 32K on the basic, unexpanded version.

This game looks great! Reminds me of Manic Miner on the Spectrum
Yeah, it has certain similarities. I have a walkthrough of Manic Miner on the BBC on this channel too, funnily enough 🙂.
Both released in 1983, I think. It would be interesting to know which came first as they do look _quite_ similar.
Yeah, the dogshit collision detection at 3:48 - knowing that only two bullets and two missiles can be on the screen at any time means the bullet fired from the left at 3:47 must be the culprit. I've also played Deathstar and later levels become impossible as the "warriors" have perfect aim... Ah well this was 1984 🤪 Just watched some more and 10:34, 10:40 and 16:12 - I almost yelled "dogshit" that is comical collision detection. The lack of extra lives on the modulo 100,000 means it is most likely time for the game to end. 😆
It just puts me off playing the game again 😱. Congrats on the million + score as well. I don't think I'd have the patience, on this particular game, to try (coming from someone who played Chuckie Egg for nearly 6 hours straight... 😂).
Bro corner camps on street fighter lol
Why didnt you do the og palette
The last one just before the 4 villains just had to be Vega's greatest rival: Ken! No one else! Maybe Chun-Li or Cammy, but Vega Vs Ken is the coolest rivalry!
Yeah, I think Ken is a bit of a narcissist too, just not as bad as Vega 😂. Ken's usually quite predictable in that he'll start spamming either hurricane kick or dragon punch when his health bar is low, so you can block and counter attack.
@@VengerVideoGamer Street Fighter 2 Victory was the first SF media to bring us the rivalry between Ken and Vega, and the games and other medias should show more of it... Well, I always considered Ken to be a womanizer(and he should continue on it... I never liked his family dad arc, it's completely unnecessary! Like KOF, SF characters should never get old!)... while Vega plays the role of a womanizer too, when he's actually gay(actually, the man Vega is in love with is himself!)...
@@brunobelz2485 I've never actually watched Street Fighter 2 Victory, and I didn't even know about it, until you mentioned it. I'll definitely take time to check it out 👍.

Subscribers seem to be slowing down lately. I'm not sure what type of videos to post. Most of my stuff is old 8 bit computer games that I play in a high score competition but they only appeal to a niche audience.

Well played!
Thank you. Much appreciated 👍.
Awe-inspiring play. To what extent do rely on remembering patterns?
Thanks 👍. Patterns really start coming into play on level 32, then level 39 and 40 and then multiples of 8 after those levels. If you notice, on level 40, I adopt a tactic of running straight to the central ladder at the start and then waiting a little bit on the ladder to get the duck's attention. I then run quickly across to the right, jump on the platform and up the ladder, to get quick access to the top platforms to get the most awkward eggs. The time limit dropping down to 100, after level 129, is the main cause of lost lives. If you notice, after level 129, I'll often commit suicide on levels with a multiple of 8 because my time would run out anyway. I could've gone on for ever, seeing as I'd effectively rolled the levels over, and instead of starting with 5 lives (like at the beginning), I'd be starting off with over 50. After over 5 and a half hours I'd had enough though 😂.
Muito bom.
Obrigado 😊
I remember playing this game decades ago. Never did get anywhere near the end. Palace of Magic I did manage to finish. A less hectic game.
I've completed both, but I always thought Citadel was easier because you can accumulate as much energy as possible, without any upper limit. With Palace of Magic, you have an upper limit to the energy bar, so you have to be much more careful with energy management.

@@THEONLYR3U it's a good game so far, to be fair.

5:02 interesting way to beat guile.
Normally I like keeping him at arm's length with fireballs, and when he comes close, more often than not he'll jump so that I can get a roundhouse in. I don't usually get two perfects on him though.
Tough game. On the Master you at least had a second fire button on the numeric keypad - had to stretch across to spam both at the same time.. all in the wrist.. crazy-fast game tho..
Yeah, it's an extremely fast game that definitely keeps you on your toes and knackers your wrists up with all that frantic shooting!
A very well designed & programmed game from David Parsons, and well played by you!
Thanks. I just wish the game was a little longer. There weren't really that many games of this type that I remember from back in the day on the NNC/Electron. The only other similar ones I can think of (i.e. side- scrolling "run and gun" games) were Stryker's Run and Shark. Commando was similar but with vertical scrolling.
Dracula plays street fighter?
"What is a Combo? A miserable little pile of secrets! But enough talk!" - Dracula, moments before starting the fight
Have at you
Now I need to watch this all the way through and complete it myself! Thank you!
Not a problem. I enjoy doing these videos, even though they don't get many views. I think it's more meaningful to post videos of games that sometimes don't have any walkthroughs at all (even though this one has), than to post more popular games that are over-represented on the net. Old and obscure games need some love too 😂.
