Drive Electric With Domenick
Drive Electric With Domenick
Hi there! I've been researching and writing about electric vehicles since 2006 and finally driving them for the past few years. On Drive Electric With Domenick, I'll be sharing my EV ownership journey, starting with a Tesla Model 3 Long Range RWD that I bought used with 43,435 miles for $31,900 in early 2023.
I'll also talk about (and hopefully drive) electric vehicles from other brands, as well as charging infrastructure and experiences. Come along for the ride, it's going to be fun!

Diesels are also a massive pain in the ass to cold start in the states where it snows
Did you buy from Tesla or 3rd party?
I bought it used from a Ford dealership outside of Chicago, then drove it home to Florida.
Get it detailed, fix the tire , and charging thing and stop hooking shit to the inside you will be ok
There are a lot slaves who believe what this kid MKBHD sasy.
Maxxforce 7 is a problematic engine. Older Caterpillar 3126 engine would never smoke this much
Was your Tesla built in the USA. The ones coming out of China are much better.
Honestly this is just a video complaining about a car :D Apart from the charging issue, which you knew about before you bought it, the rest are cosmetic. The "extra" problems are from you not inspecting the car fully before you purchased it but yeah. live and learn
1:02 the PCS more like POS ;)
Great video Dom. Listening to your comments it suddenly struck me you guys in the US really are missing out on some great EV's. Even in Australia we now have a lot of the ones you seen in the video. I will be back in Budapest later this year. Looking forward to seeing what's changed in EVs since I was last there. Let me know when your planning a visit Downunder. 👍
sheesh! We were thinking about replacing our ICE car with a Model 3, but being stranded at a charging station for 11 hours or something because your PCS shit the bed is a real concern. How common are those PCS problems?
The PCS only affects AC charging, so it still charges fast at a Supercharger. It's not that common, I don't think. Mostly an issue with early builds.
@@DriveElectricWithDomenick so does that mean you couldn't do level 2 charging at home with a broken PCS?
@stevep6318 yes, I can still charge at home. The PCS has three "blocks." Two of the blocks in mine are down, so it charges at 1/3 of normal: ~3-4 kW.
5:35 not an eUp
Thanks! I totally forgot the eUP! was based on a combustion car. Didn't even register while looking at the UP! badge on the back. Will try to add a note.
do you think I should buy a used model 3 now or wait?
If you want one, I don't see how they could lose significantly more value than they already have.
Great video. Had to comment as I drive a Born 🙂 Austria looks beautiful, though I was surprised you didn’t see more EVs there, I think the BYD was an Atto 3. Love EV spotting & it’s easy in the U.K. as they have a green patch at the end of the number plate. Saw a model Y from Finland in a supermarket car park last week, which is quite a road trip (I’m in Cornwall, far South West of the U.K.).
Apologies I missed you’d written Atto 3 and KZread won’t let me edit my comment.
I still haven't been to the UK yet. Would love to go and do some EV-spotting, but also charger spotting. I feel like the sentiment there is that there's a paucity of chargers, so I'd love to see what the situation on the ground is actually like. I know the UK was hugely underserved for some time.
@geoffreyjones6019 that's alright. Was a bit embarrassing not knowing the name right off (though, not quite as embarrassing as not recognizing that Skoda Enyaq). Surprised the Atto 3 badge wasn't on it.
@@DriveElectricWithDomenick You should definitely come to the U.K. if you can, I think you’d find the EV scene pretty interesting. Perhaps you could feature on a panel at one of the Everything Electric shows? The charging infrastructure has improved massively over the past couple of years, over 60,000 public chargers now (45% increase from a year ago) of which roughly 12,000 are rapids or ultrarapids. Cornwall isn’t particularly well served but over 30 ultrarapids have opened within 10 miles of me in the past few months, including 8 V4 superchargers just up the road which is very handy!
Car spotting is so fun. Loved this video!
Thanks! It was an awesome few days.
totally jelly!
The entire experience of this novelty gadget comes across as being much like a passenger in a car driven by a learner driver who is in a totally unfamiliar area and entirely out of their comfort zone. When so-called FSD can pass 10 000 standard driving tests in a row on 10 000 different routes with no failures I would begin to accept its capability.
Yes Elon is right, it will be ready 8/8, unfortunately he didn’t say which millennium 😂
I would love to see you take this so called FSD around the streets of London lol, it wouldn’t have a clue & would probably give up lol
After that, bring it here to North Devon and see what it makes of a single track deep lane with 15 tons of Fendt and slurry tanker approaching...
I agree with you Dominic. It accelerates way too fast from a comfort perspective. Which causes it to over shoot the speed limit and regen/brake to slow back down. Also, I rarely use the friction brakes when I'm driving and FSD is constantly using them. 😵💫
Thanks for the feedback.
Do you think you'd still buy it again? Do you have a breakdown of the amount of hours and money it took to troubleshoot or resolve these issues? I have a 2017 Prius, runs like a champ, very low maintenance and cost me $12.5k used back in 2021 (worth more now because of inflation in 2024). Teslas are too high maintenance, and the time and frustration fixing these issues would be a huge problem.
I really enjoy the driving experience, so I would buy it again. I wish I could buy it at today's market prices, though. The used prices were still on the high side when I bought. I haven't fixed a lot of the issues. Some are just so small - like the small blemish on the back glass - that I don't think of them when I have free time. I don't see it as a high-maintenance vehicle. I basically just drive it. I never have to change the oil, or do that kind of ICE maintenance. I just plug it in occasionally and drive it. And, having a driven a new (base) Prius a couple weeks ago, I'd rather have a used Model 3 than a brand new Prius. Just a much better driving and software/feature experience.
@@DriveElectricWithDomenickInteresting. Thanks for sharing. I'd compare a used Prius to a used M3 for the most accurate cost-benefit analysis. 😉Tesla value has dropped like a hot rock in water, as we all know, while the Prius has held strong. I really look forward to seeing longterm reviews on these 2018 M3s compared to the 2017 Prius, for example. I'd reckon I'll see far more Prius on the road relative to the total amount sold in the US for each vehicle (between 2017 Prius and 2018 Model 3). That will be the best way to test total cost of ownership at 10 yrs (including time spent, gas/electricity costs, maintenance, part replacements, and initial MSRP). I'd reckon Tesla owners pay more upfront (higher MSRP) and more on the back end (higher out-of-warranty maintenance costs and time spent troubleshooting). I include time in total cost to own because I like filling up my tank in 5 mins and going instead of being tethered to the grid until an EV recharges. Time and freedom to move (away from the electrical grid) is a quantifiable value add to hybrid drivers that EV drivers cannot replicate at the moment.
@NovaPrincess Personally, I charge at home, so I save a ton of time never having to go to a gas station. I've road-tripped close to 20,000 miles in the past couple years, and never had any issue with being too far from the grid. It can take a little longer to roadtrip with an EV, but I much prefer it. Just a better driving experience, and that makes up for the extra bit of time some trips need.
I think FSD team has a big challange on nailing it to drive based on Age factor!.
was that the continental divide in southern Texas
Can you set the Tesla FSD to avoid freeways?
You can set it to avoid toll roads. It's basically like Google Maps. So, if you want to avoid a highway, you can disengage round the point where it might take an onramp. Then, it would reroute from that new point.
It is glorified cruise control. tsla will be bankrupt within three years.
At 17 minutes. Did the car just wait until it was sure there was space enough on the other side of the intersection? I think that is the preferred behaviour so that the car does not end up blocking the intersection. Nice video! I like your DEWD loops😊
Thanks, glad you enjoy these. Looking at the screen, the traffic lights don't appear until the bus is out of the way across the intersection, so I think that was the issue. I suspect if it could see the light, it would have followed the bus more closely. would be a good be
I have the new version and love it. My husband is ill so I do all the driving. FSD is a blessing. I know it’s not perfect but neither am I. For me it’s like I have a chauffeur driving me.
Janis, you better watch the 'chauffeur' like a *hawk* , because it makes mistakes on any challenging drive. You might have to jump in and take control in a split-second to avoid a tragedy. .
Like it says supervised and I do
@@janishill54 By the way, did you know that FSD has always been supervised? And it has always been in beta, and continues to be in beta.
@@janishill54 Then what does it actually do?
FSD is sooooooo coool, unlike you
Ok. Well, thanks for watching.
Dom, you need to compare previous experience to the current drive, especially areas it had issues to see if it’s been resolved. It’s hard to follow when you’re just spewing issues. Did it do better the last drive or new issues? This way we know what areas it regressed and it resolved. Also note, you can add new routes, but keep old routes until FSD resolved all issues. I think progress is good when disengagements are not part of the issues.
The previous drive had an issue while driving around the stadium, and I mentioned it at that spot, along with the issue basically caused by it moving to the far right lane instead of the left. The other area where it had a significant issue last time was approaching a traffic light that was green this time instead of yellow, and there was no issue. Just realized now that it also didn't pause by overhead flashing yellows this last time, which was good. So, it was definitely better than the previous drive. As I mentioned in the summation, while acceleration is still too brisk, deceleration behavior was improved. I also mention that it stops closer to the car in front now in traffic.
i cancelled my FSD subscription
Yeah, I wouldn't pay for it either. I got lucky when I bought my car used and it was included.
@@DriveElectricWithDomenick i will say subscription for fsd is only like enchance auto pilot so not really full self driving
good for you but i dont watch your friday show anymore
Great review. Would love to see the test at night and when raining.
And fog, and a Chicago blizzard, and everything that isn't a warm sunny day with roads that are very well marked. But Tesla can't progress to that until it gives up on camera-only.
I feel that you are too critical of FSD's behavior.
I understand not everyone will agree with my perspective, but I appreciate you tuning in regardless.
I would ask anyone with FSD: "What would you say to a chauffer to whom you'd just given $10 000 and he drove like this?".
At least I know when Dom will say its ready, it will be ready 😀 . Thanks for testing it
Thanks for that vote of confidence. 🙂
As an FSD user, I agree with much of your analysis. The miniscule 'events' don't bother me as much as they do you. But overall, fair analysis. Thanks.
By the way for the purposes of demonstrating full self drive and use of turn signals, it would be helpful if you turned on the repeater cameras so that we can see that it is turning By the way, it’s not illegal to cross the bike lane as long as no bike is in it
The repeater camera pops up when the turn signals do.
Gosh, Domenick, when your "Tesla Robotaxi" doesn't have a steering wheel, with "even one fail," "you're still screwed."
Right. That's why my title says "...But Still Not Full Self-Driving"
I don’t always agree with FSD but it generally does a good job. I took a 200 mile trip last weekend and it did about 195 miles of it. However, you can modify it behavior anytime if you want to change lanes, you can use the turn signal and make it change lanes. I don’t consider that to be a violation of how FSD works. I do agree that it accelerates rapidly. I would prefer that it went a bit slower and I think the lane changes can sometimes be a bit abrupt than that. I think it’s actually quite good but it’s not gonna be anytime soon. I wouldn’t let it go without it.
Steve, in any busy big city (LA, New York, Toronto) FSD needs human *interventions* . The proof is on KZread. 200 miles, all freeway, will give you a false sense of trust, in the simple Level 2 FSD system.
I recently bought a used 2022 Tesla Model 3, and I love it. I have the RWD like you do. I would suggest the following: 1. A windshield repair company can probably fix the chip in your glass roof edge. 2. Make sure you get your tire fixed quickly because tires with leaks can lose all of their air in a couple of seconds and cause a wreck, tear up your tire and damage your rim. 3. Paint chips on a 2018 is understandable 4. I would also get the charging problem fixed as soon as possible. I wish you good luck with your Model 3.
We have a service center that's supposed to open in Tallahassee in a couple months. Plan on bringing it in when that happens.
I have drove with people that drive a lot worse. If that was a human driver I would drive again with them with no complaints
That announcement was perfectly timed.
Wish me luck as I drive an Ocean One from Phoenix, AZ to Philadelphia, PA and YES, I am daring to also drive back. Bummer that I missed that 4 truck drive from Florida to San Diego BUT I guess the Ocean is not a truck, but I would have tagged along just for the experience not the expolsure.
Sounds like an awesome road trip. Good luck!
FSD sucks so bad, 8k is a rip off for this
Why is it out of warranty. It is a 2018. So you should have 2 years left. Unless it has over 100k miles. That’s exactly why I bought a 2021 so it will be under warranty for me
I think that the silhouette of the pedestrian on the yellow crossing sign is being mistaken for an actual pedestrian by the AI.
Perfectly PARKED!
Amphibious drown!
Ohhh, water landing.
more stress than manually driving.
im honestly shocked how delusional tesla fanboys are. this software is no where near ready and to say it drives better than other humans on the road when it still can't recogonise very important situations on the road. Its a ticking time bomb.
Your car is shit.
