Yes you can, but I would recommend a different rear end gear to get that result. I am not sure if the 96 use the H190 still but if it does you have a large range of gearing options. If it is the newer rear you will have even more options.

I had a bent D44 housing that was causing me to lose axle seals constantly so I got their removal and install down to a science. First thing is to cut off the bearing cage and get it and the rollers out of the way. The locking ring is soft metal so I drill it with 1/4" and then 3/8" the drill bit wont hurt the axle so it's a no brainer. Once its drilled you just smack it off with a cold chisel. The bearing race gets cut 90% with the grinder and use the cold chisel to break it at the cut line. I put them back together as shown but I'll warn that some axles have a step above where the seal rides that you can slide the seal on trying to get it out of your way and it ends up ruining the seal. Ask me how I know.

  • @i2edeye

63A is like the defacto/ubiquitous 510 trans swap for l series. Rebuilt the one in my wagon, it was a pain in the ass compared to the 71/long tail style truck/z car trans ive done or helped rebuild. The long tails are better trans as well with more ratio options from what i recall, but the 63a is the same length as stock 510 so you dont have to cut up your tunnel or shorten your driveshaft, and way better to have overdrive and a better shifter design than the stock 510 monkey motion trans. Assume this info applies to 521s as well. Nice to know about the bellhousing swap trick. And for the bronze bushings, you can get a GM door hinge rebuild kit and its a straight swap for the plastic ones (kit #38377)

Great stuff! I just reinstalled my 1970 521 L16 4 speed trans. I have never seen this style before, it has an oil plan, it has the wierd trans mount. Shifter is really different than all these. Its bolted on from bottom of chrome stick. Its totally different than any other L series. Also the starter holes are through bolts, no threads! I also noticed the L/z/vg/ka all use the same input shaft. So same clutch tool from 1970-2004 trucks/pathfinders I have done. This input is also the same as 4cy transfer case inputs. v6 inputs are larger on tcase. I am still trying to decide what engine and manual trans to upgrade to in the 521. Leaning towards a ka with 5speed. Maybe a qr25de.
