well.. the most important question - how accurate are the receivers? I am munrobagging with a garmin bike gps and my phone as a backup, and unfortunately, both show the underlying philosophy of being 'fast moving tracking' devices. If you ride a bike a car, or you run, gps nicely tracks as it can easily predict the direction you are going. But when you hike, you move much slower and then the gps starts 'dancing' due to inaccuracy of the positioning, plus, if you are really lost, and you turn a lot, moving slowly, the devices do more harm than good. I need a device that I can upload a gpx file to, having an ability to overlay that track on top of topo map would be awesome. Colour display is not relevant to me.

Just bought the se version because I have NO IDEA what they’re about so I didn’t want to spend a fortune. (Tbh I couldn’t even justify buying one, I just wanted one) Figured I’d buy one just to track my mileage as I need to lose a lot of weight. Arrived today so I investigated what I can use it for and discovered geocaching. Never heard of it before ! However, this will definitely make me get out there for walks instead of boring circuits round the block near my house. Yes, I could do it with my phone, but the online gives a pin on a map and I could zoom in and know exactly where to head. With the SE, I’ll make sure I don’t consult a map, and I’ll navigate with the SE instead, Initially, I thought the lack of maps on the SE would be a hindrance, but for geocaching, it adds to the adventure. It’s 1:15 am btw, I’ve just discovered geocaching, checked my area and there’s loads of spots and I can’t wait to get out there. I usually hate walking and distract myself with headphones and podcasts or music. I see the walking as a chore. Now I’ll see it as a bit of an adventure, There’s a cache 63 metres from my house…. WHO KNEW ! Haha

That’s funny-I guess I do use my Montana almost entirely as a moving map because I will go to a trailhead and then just walk-I like to know where I am and I do that by making the map scale bigger or smaller…. I also always like to go a new way each time I go somewhere just to see what there is to see. And then I use my Montana to ensure I can get back to my car and not be turned around or something…. Most of the places I go don’t have any or reliable cell signals so that is the main reason I have a GPS rather than using a phone app…. And then when I get home I like to see where I went and I load it onto the computer and look at it there. Also I do what is called cani-cross which stands for canine cross-country and for the club I belong to I’m required to keep a record of where we went; sometimes we go a long distance and other times not. I guess I’m not much of an advance route planner! 😊

I guess I'm a bit different to many people on here. After many weeks and months of careful research, I finally decided to buy a Garmin GPSMAP 67i. So I'm a newbie to this GPS navigation stuff and attempting to learn on a pretty sophisticated unit. Firstly, I fully concur with your comments about the hellish number of different software Apps that Garmin and other 3rd parties are confusing the marketplace. I'm overwhelmed by all these choices. As I embarked on setting up my device guided by the Garmin Owners Manual I was very quickly encouraged to install Garmin Explore, Garmin Messenger and Garmin Connect on my iPhone. On my Apple MacBook at the same time, I was encouraged to install Garmin Express and Garmin BaseCamp, along with setting up an Internet Connection to Garmin Connect and creating a shared web page on Garmin's Internet site to allow my wife and my children to follow my adventures online. In addition, I was encouraged to connect to the InReach Satellite service with a hefty subscription fee. It truly was overwhelming, and I still haven't figured out the best ways to navigate with my 67i. I'm struggling with confusing jargon and terminology that seems to only be understood by an in-crowd of longer-term GPS users. This week I'm struggling to learn what the differences are between a Route, a Track, and a Course. I stumbled over the problem that Routes can only have up to 250 Waypoints. I therefore became very frustrated when a Route that I carefully planned and then downloaded to my 67i plugged directly into my MacBook, using Garmin Express, was somehow converted into a Course. Not sure why. I'm guessing Garmin Express recognised that my "Route" had many more than 250 waypoints, so it deposited it into the Courses data folder. The format was now a .FIT file, not a .GPX file like I had expected. So, bummer, when I tried following my shiny new Course, there were no audible or vibrating alerts to tell me when I had reached a Waypoint. Nor were there any audible alerts to tell me when I navigated off-course. (I subsequently learned that the setup menu item to turn on Off-course Alerts is obscurely buried in a Marine setup sub-menu. Good grief!). As I said, I am a newbie. I do expect a very steep learning curve. But, my goodness, I didn't anticipate this overwhelming layer-upon layer of complexity. I think it is way past time for Garmin to publish a brand-new suite of software. What we have today is the classical legacy software example of layer-upon-layer of spaghetti logic stitched together over 35-to-40 years of software engineers trying in vain to be backwards compatible. It simply isn't good enough.

Hi, thanks to GPS training, I've recently joined this youtube channel, not discovered since now on the web. I bought a GPS Map 67 from Garmin dealer not much time ago, I used it for a while, coming from a previus Etrex 30 (I still have, and sometimes found easier to use than the new one...!). I'm quite satisfied of the new unit, however some part of the user menu still make me a little bit confused in operation. I mean and point out how to operate easily and correctly between the planning route option: one showed with a mark pointer and the other showed with a folder and a lightblue track filled on. When I transfer a planned route from the PC (designed with Base camp software) it is collected in the first described option, but it cannot be made operational until it is activated by the "go" function. Unfortunaly, Garmin's decision to abandon BaseCamp updating are creating some trouble in transferringo data, so that sometimes (very often, really) makes problem to correctly show the track on the gps unit at the end of the waypoint creating process. Creating the planned route with Explorer app, put the planned route in the second item (folder with the lightblue track), immediately available to be traveled. The problem is that the Explorer app has got a map really unasable (a sort of outdoor active, with no identification of the tracks reported that make them absolutely not clear) and no other map can be added (at least in italian region, where I am) to the app. Is there anything I failed to learn or I have not understood about? Where can I improve my knowledge on the matter? Thanks in advance and best compliments for your channel.

WHO KNEW ! Haha
Can I go out for a walk with this, without connecting to my phone, and later on, check my route on a map, distance, speed, elevation etc and keep a record of mileage over more than one trip (like an odometer) I don’t like having to rely on a phone, or push a stop start button every time I stop or start walking again (I have to on my phone apps) That’s all I really need one for tbh
Yes you can, I hope this helps.
@@ukgpstraining do you know how I can do that because I’m struggling to work out how to find my walk on a map when I’m home Thanks
@@Conflictofinterest902 Please accept myu apologies, but as will appreciate we are unable to give 1:1 coaching via KZread. There are Training videos in the online resource - gpsonlinecourse.co.uk/
So I guess I'll scratch this off the purchase list? Financial stability no different than giving $5 to a homeless guy. Imagine having service cut out when you're relying on this in the field. Going with a stable firm such as Garmin.
It's ugly as f!
In one of my 'walk and talk' videos I discuss how the Montana is great for those people who do not want to plan routes before heading out, here is the extract - kzread.info/dash/bejne/e4qlj6ykZcK2ips.html
How did you secure the device to your backpack strap?
I use a backpack tether - gpstraining.co.uk/collections/accessories/products/garmin-backpack-tether I hope this helps.
I am in the USA. Is there a functioning customer service number for them in the USA? I want to roll over to the "Freedom" plan after my free 1 year plan runs out by the end of the month. However, that option is nowhere to be found online while I am trying to purchase, and customer service calls are no longer going through.
Great video . I have just had the Epix Gen 2 Pro for three weeks. This is my first GPS Smart Watch. I’m impressed with its capabilities. I’ll never use anywhere near what it is capable of . I love the screen , love all the data. It is encouraging me to get out and walk more which is great. Thanks for the excellent video on how to use it on a walk. Really helpful.
