    If I use a textured paint, will that cause problems with applying a label and getting it to stick?

  • @StompBoxParts
    @StompBoxParts4 ай бұрын

    Depends on how textured. If you're applying waterslide/sticker/label that cover the whole face of the pedal, the texture may cause issues. Smoother or flatter paints will work better in that case. If you must use textured, you'll probably need to apply several layers of clear coat to smooth it out a bit.

    I think they all have their own flavor, probably helps to hear a variety of material instead of just a single big-chord loop! To me, here's how they sound but is in no way definitive of everyone's experience. Stock silicon: sounds compressed, kinda fizzy. Good reference point. Germanium: More compressed than stock but smoother up top. Needs the volume up much higher on the pedal to hit unity. LED's: Much less compressed, responds to playing dynamics very well. Nice clarity, some extra high end that plays nicely with the tone knob rolled back. Much louder than stock. No diodes: The loudest of the bunch. You're probably hearing the amp saturate quite a bit because of how much louder it is. Makes for a very solid boost pedal now.

    Ripping out the diodes like that is a great way to destroy the pads. Remove the solder first. Lol turns out stock diodes sound best.

  • @StompBoxParts
    @StompBoxParts4 ай бұрын

    If that works for you, great! With the exception of using a vacuum powered desoldering station (not shown in this video to keep accessible for most viewers), I have found trying to remove the solder first in many scenarios does not aid in removing the component. I've destroyed many pads in my younger years trying to clean all the solder out before removing a part. It works fine if the components legs are straight and not bent over. Frequently though, there are a lot of parts that will have some stubborn solder adhering the part to the pad (especially for double sided pads). I've had much greater success adding fresh solder, heat while gently pulling. Alas, there are many ways to remove a component. As far as the sound goes, everyone has their own preferences!

  • @michaelmoore7975
    @michaelmoore79754 ай бұрын

    @2:30 If you aren't going to re-use the diode, a much quicker and less damaging method is to just clip out the diode completely. Then, from the other side, grab the leftover piece with tweezers and melt the solder, pulling the leftover piece out. When pulling it from the diode side the normal way, that bent over piece can rip out the eyelet and/or trace. This way you're pulling it straight out.

  • @StompBoxParts
    @StompBoxParts4 ай бұрын

    This is another totally valid way of removing components! As long as you can commit to destroying the part.

    This is very much do-able for Q2. Replace the trim pot on the circuit board with wires going to a full size pot (B10k, same as the trim pot). Drill a hole in the enclosure and mount the pot so you can adjust it on the outside. If you want to bias Q1, it would require a bit more work but still do-able. Replace the 33k resistor with a potentiometer wired as a variable resistor. You would also need another resistor in series to avoid overloading and frying Q1.

    When doing PCB layouts how do you make sure the traces and the wires to the pots and jacks aren't going to create more noises, hiss, crosstalk, oscillations because of gain circuits? its very easy to cause oscillations with gain circuits and the component layout have to follow rules which you should go over in a video lesson

  • @StompBoxParts
    @StompBoxParts8 ай бұрын

    If the paint is still wet do not sand. If the paint is dry, sanding will help the new coat stick better and flattens out the dry coat. Certain finishes (like hammertone used in this video) simply don't work with sanding because you'd be sanding off the hammer texture.

    ### Conditions * Well ventilated space * Little no wind * 60 to 85 Fahrenheit * Relative humidity <65% ### Supplies * Surface to paint on * Vented covering between coats (cardboard box) * Wet/dry sandpaper around 320 grit * Stilts, optional (chunks of wood, balled up paper, etc.) * Self etching or aluminum primer * Base coat, textured recommended over flat paint because it is more forgiving and doesn't require sanding between coats * Clear coat (durable top coat for thicker, lacquer for thinner finish) * Labels (sharpie, stencils, rubber stamps and ink, vinyl stickers, water slide decals) * Enclosure ### Steps 1. Surface prep: under running water sand the entire surface of the pedal with ~320 grit sandpaper. Wash pedal with dish soap and brush 2. Primer: let pedal fully dry and sit wherever you're painting 5 or so minutes to acclimate to temperature. Apply a quick, thin coat of self etching primer from 6-12 inches away. Keep the can moving and don't worry about coating the entire pedal in one coat. Wait 5-10 minutes before the next coat, with the pedal under your cardboard box. 2 or 3 primer coats is usually good. 3. Base coat: like the primer, apply 3-4 thin coats 4. Labeling: wait an hour until dry to move. Let fully cure for 24-48 hours. Add labels of choice. Let labels fully dry before clear coating 5. Clear coat: similar process to primer and base coat. Apply 2+ thin coats. 6. Let fully dry 24-48 hours before filling with parts.

  • @StompBoxParts
    @StompBoxParts9 ай бұрын

    You could use an impact driver, it could be done. But a drill is the correct tool for making holes. Comes down to control, speed, pressure. Ideally drilling at a slow speed with controlled pressure for clean holes, where most impacts are very fast and if there's resistance it's just going to bang through. If all you have on hand is the impact, worth a shot.

    I got this kit and tried to build it but I think I was thrown off by the diagram being used 5:48 instead of actual video footage. I was confused by a couple things (altho I see the necessity for making that move in order to differentiate between the different wires by color coding).. the orientation of the pcb while wiring up in relation to the bottom of the switch was a big question mark. also, this diagram doesn't depict the fuzz circuit so that threw me off. this is the first time I've tried to build a guitar pedal, so my perspective is from that of a total beginner. I had to remove and re-solder several components and the end result was a silent pedal when turned on! I'm already a loyal customer, tho and also bought the Klon kit. looking forward to sorting this all out and also, lastly, want to express my gratitude to you for putting in this effort to help aspiring pedal freqs take their awkward first steps. cheers
