Exploring the musical world of modular synthesis through VCV Rack patches.
Hi There! I'm currently in the "learning to make generative music in VCV Rack" phase of my musical journey, hoping to eventually graduate into the "I make generative music in VCV Rack" state. But the expectation is that it will take a while until that point has been reached, so until then there will be a lot of studying and experimenting. I will be sharing the results of this experimentation on this channel. Feel free to join me on the journey!

Nice tuto about Nullpath!
Thanks! It's a nice set of modules with some interesting possibilities.
You are a genius brother, thank you so much for sharing this knowledge in a very simple way as anybody could understand. Keep inspiring
Thank you! Glad you found the tutorial helpful.
that's a lot of modules! Gorgeous sounds
Thank you! There were actually even more modules in there while I was trying to take some control over the blending of the voices over time. But I removed them near the end of the patch construction because it simply wasn't working as intended 😄
Very nice!were all sounds synthesized or some samples? It sounds amazing
Thank you! It's all synthesized as the patch is playing. Even the Simpliciter module that you can see in the middle of the second row is continuously recording the synthesized voice that's in front of it and then mixing in the recorded sample in reverse.
@@not-things thats amazing it sounds so good!
Sometimes you can't help wishing that certain patches were downloads - really nice piece
Thank you! I am thinking to somewhere down the line (when I find time for it) create a tutorial about how I used the delays in this patch. It won't be the full patch, but it will contain some parts of it 😉
lovely sound :)
Thanks :-)
creative and inspiring ty
Glad you liked it 😊
I don't understand ... so few likes. This is an amazing work to patch !
Thanks a lot, glad you like it 😊
A gorgeous spaghetti monster. Any tips for cleaner drones?
Thanks! I'm also still experimenting a lot to try and figure out what works and what doesn't. It's usually a case of "less is more", except in those cases where it needs a little more 😉
Excellent. How much CPU was that using?
Thanks! VCV Rack itself reports around 75% average CPU usage (Thread count is set to 2 in the Engine menu), and Windows Task Manager reports Rack.exe as using 43% CPU (on an Intel Core i7-11700)
masterful patching! And you are a masochist for using all red!
Thank you kindly! And what can I say, I like red ... 😉
Chill and lovely
Thanks!
An amazing composition. Wonderful sound and movement.
Thank you very much!
Quite complex patch and great example of know-how. Overall beautiful composition. The path to the modular synthesizer can sometimes be arduous. ♥
Thank you, glad you liked it 😊
Arduous indeed. There's live modular, which can be as simple as a few modules, and then there's this, a whole other level, this is preconfigured and highly complex, generative but controlled throughout... it's such a beauty to behold.
On the other hand, I don't think I would be able to pull off a patch that I would be happy with using just a few modules. That's an art in itself.
impressive
Thanks!
Epic!🤟💥
Thank you! 👍😁
Wonderful!
Thank you!
What beautiful and clever work. And 3 instances of ShapeMaster always gets my vote haha.
Thanks! I did have some plans for additional parameters to modulate, but ended up deciding that 3 ShapeMaster instances should suffice 😉
Absolutely wonderful! I would love to see where you might be able to go with this!
Glad you enjoyed it :-)
Really nice sound design there, well done.
Thank you Lars!
one of the best VCV songs … !
That's very kind 😊
WOW! Just wonderful 🙂
Many thanks!
Such cool sounds. Thanks for a simple yet effective tutorial. God bless you 😊🙏🏼❤️
Glad you liked it 😁
Perfection 😮
Thanks 😊
Bravo , grandiose 👍👍👍
Thank you 😁
Beautiful
Thank you!
Fantastic relaxing music to work to. Great job!
Thank you very much!
Beautiful...
Thank you 😊
Only 3 unfinished patches? I've got hundreds!!! 😉 Sounds nice though, I also like to make slightly more drone style patches like this sometimes. It's really satisfying.
There are three that are in progress and considered unfinished, I'm not taking the abandoned and/or "maybe for later" patches into account 😄
You nailed it. Well done. It must have been super satisfying once you got it all patched up.
To be honest, pretty much all my patches end with an "Ok, that has to be enough. I have to stop now, I can't keep tinkering with it" :-)
Hahaha familiar feeling! Never done 🤣
may we ask for a copy of tis wonderful patch?
This patch can be found on my Bandcamp page, and will be released on other platforms (Spotify, Apple, etc.) at the end of this month.
The miracle of C Major! Sounds great!
Can't go wrong with the classic C ;-) Glad you liked it!
very nice!
Thank you!
A very nice piece, and I appreciate the detailed breakdown in the description! The distant sparkly notes remind me a lot of space ambient genre.
Thanks, glad you like it 😁 It's always a bit of work to try and write a clear summary, but well worth the effort.
virtual objects emulating hardware emulating running digital code emulating analog, acoustic and mathematical processes... & sounding absolutely gorgeous 😍
Your description make me think "Then fake plastic trees would be good cover art for this", so now I'm listening to Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead 😄
A worthy addition to the "save game room" genre. Peaceful and makes you want to stick around.
The goal was to create something that you can have playing in the background without it getting either annoying or boring, so I guess I succeeded? ;-)
@@not-things yes not meant as an insult at all, this is great
Thanks! And don't worry, I didn't read your initial comment as a negative one.
I'm attempting to do this, sorta of slow wash effect ,with vcv ❤🙏🙃
I'm sure that there are (many) other ways to achieve this in VCV/modular, but I'm using the "Reverb" cheat code to get those slow washes 😉 A long (almost) wet-only reverb, and then it's a matter of looking for the right sounds to send into the reverb. Usually it's a matter of "less is more" 😊
@@not-things i trying to achieve this but not for actual music but more alien sounds to give a organic feel like this. sorta like a sound painting , an alien world back drop.
awesome❤🙏🙃 reminds me of a dream
That's a very nice compliment, thank you 😁
Great pads! I think I agree with you on the polyphony comment -- being able to create lush pads like this would take quite a lot of rigs in order to get right :)
Thanks! The additions that VCV has given when compared to a physical rig have really spoiled us ;-)
One of the most beautiful patches I ever heard in VCV Rack, thank you for sharing so many great ideas. Subscribed.
Thank you, much appreciated.
Awesome patch - everything was explained in detail. Thank you so much making me much more familiar with the techniques of modular synths. 👌🏻💯
Glad it was helpful!
Around 11:30, I duplicate a cable by using Ctrl+Click/Drag the Collapse Clock input. This video was recorded with VCV Rack v2.4.1. Starting from v2.5.0, the shortcut combination for this has instead changed to Ctrl+Shift+Click/Drag instead.
One of the best tutorials I've ever seen 🙏❤️ Thank you 🙏
Thank you very much! 😁
Wonderful tutorial, very clearly delivered. Thanks.
Thank you, glad you liked it.
@@not-things Also, is there appropriate place to DM you. Been trying to get in contact regarding something else.
I've added an email address that's available in the about section of my profile, or you could contact me through my Bandcamp page
Just a correction, Ionian is the root mode of the Major scale, is the first mode. Minor modes are, Dorian 2nd mode, Phrigian 3rd mode and Aeolian 6th mode. Ionian is not a minor mode.
That's correct, and I think it matches what I said in the video? It was set to Ionian, which is a major scale, and then I moved it to Aeolian, which is a minor scale, and then moved it back to Ionian, since I wanted the C major scale.
That was very inspirational. Lovely sounds and I'd never got round to playing with the Entangle and Collapse - which you got me trying now!
Thank you! I found those modules a while back while looking for a switch that could do a little something extra, and they turned out to be perfectly suited for what was needed here 😁
@@not-things hey there! just wanted to drop a note to say this was a really nice patch, and i was excited to see some of the NullPath modules i developed in collaboration with another dev show up! so glad there's at least someone out there getting some use out of them since i haven't had the mental bandwidth to work on them for quite a while and some of them have some big issues. but again, i'm super happy to see them in the wild!
@alefnull I really like the unique way that the Entangle, Collapse and Expand bring different randomization/variation options into the switching process, and it also helps that they have a cool look to them 😊 So thank you for the modules!
BEEN WAITING FOR ANOTHER AMAZING TUTORIAL FROM YOU... ABOUT DAMN TIME 😜!1111111
Happy to finally have another tutorial ready. They require time and inspiration, and both had been lacking a bit recently.
Very cool ... Thanks !!!!
Glad you like it :-)
Great modular music. Subscribed
Thank you! And welcome 😁
Such a good patch. A lot generative music just sounds like random notes, but this is really musical! 👌
Thank you! My former musical education is probably seeping through, it's all about chords and scales for me 😉
@@not-things I'm not formally trained but I've been learning a lot more theory recently. It hasn't helped with composing anything yet 😂
