    Hi Dave and Fontlab. Please improve the quality of your tutorials. This was such a short video on a rather complicated subject. Thanks.

    Since I see many people not understanding the classes, here's what I understood: The aim of these classes is to group letters with similar weight and shape and to tell the app in what way would you wish them to get adjusted the process of editing the kerning: first class - front or in other words the letter adjusts itself considering the second one, second class - the opposite of the first class, and then we have both ways. Am I correct? @fontlabtv

    Hi Dave, I hate your dumb timer. Why do you have to rush the process in the very first video? People are trying to learn here, not race through to finish quickly. You may be skilled at using Fontlab, but you need to work on your skills as an instructor/teacher my friend.

    Hi Dave. Thank you for your videos, but there needs to be more effort put into these videos. It's all over the place and not well organized into a coherent thought process. I believe these videos actually put people off from purchasing fontlab. I'm keener to buy glyphs app because of the logical and well-organized tutorials they offer.

    Although I found the concept alluring, I am hesitant to purchase it without a trial, because: I hear it does not work for some people here, and it crashes, and these issues are not being addressed by seller. The former trial version users maybe did not buy it because it did not work, and the company could not do anything about those who actually used the trial version? So now we can't? What kind of reasoning works that way? This goes in maybe later but probably not bucket. At first I wanted to get this, now I'm cynical enough to put it off.

    I've got a connected script font (connects using 'calt' feature) that has multiple weights in the font family (light, regular, bold) - the problem is - letters connecting different weights disconnect whenever I change the style/weight in the middle of the word (for example: "algebra" is written in light and each letter is seamlessly connected to each other, but I decide to make the letter pair "eb" bold, but upon that letter "g" disconnects from "e" and "b" is not connecting to "r") how do I keep the letters connected between different weights in the same font family????? Any link, tutorial or at least discussion on this topic would be appreciated 🙏

    I created letters in Adobe Illustrator and copied them to FontLab. Now, I need to make variations like bold and light for this font. I watched a tutorial titled 'Add Variation. Type Design in FontLab 7 with Dave Lawrence,' but it wasn't clear on how to create existing font variations. Do you have any ideas on how to do this easily?

    Nice bait and switch. There is NO TRIAL version available on their website anymore. They make you shell out $140 (CDN) but then tell you there is a 60 day money back guarantee. It will take users all of 5 minutes to try the app so why on earth would you make people buy it, then if it doesnt meet their needs, process a refund 5 minutes later? Put a trial version back on your website or at the very least edit this video.

  • @fontlabtv
    @fontlabtv Жыл бұрын

    You’re right. But it’s not really a "bait". We had a trial version but unfortunately we found a large amount of people which didn’t really use it as a proper trial - they basically got the trial, converted all the fonts they needed within the trial period, and never really purchased the app even though it did very well what it had promised to do. TransType has been tested by thousands of users, and we practically don’t see any returns within the money-back guarantee. We made the video before we disabled the trail download. The video has been linked from various places on the web. We apologize for the confusion!

    We’ve cut out the portion where we talk about the trial version from our video, thanks for pointing that out. It was an oversight on our end to keep that portion of the video after we’ve retired the actual trial.

    This is NOTHING like ScanFont. Where's the scanned artwork? Where's the auto-tracing with different thresholds? Where's the individual baseline adjustments? All this shows is the work you'd do AFTER the quick and easy ScanFont process (which isn't quick and easy in any other app). I wish FontLab would continue supporting ScanFont as I cannot find another good replacement.

    What is classes? What is pairs? And essentially what kerning panel does? What is different between classes and pairs? Why do one need classes if you basically need a kerning panel with glyphs all beside each other to set the numbers? The most horrible UX I've come across lately. I imported classes from another font for specifically Armenian letters, but yet no kerning pairs appeared in kerning panel, nor in pairs I can find anything appropriate. It basically needs to be explained what each term stands for. Or even better, those features need to be merged into just one panel, rather than splitting them into 3. I watched the video 5 times, pausing and trying some stuff, yet no result. I wish the video at least were way longer than 6 minutes, but properly explained.

  • @fontlabtv
    @fontlabtv Жыл бұрын

    A class is a group of glyphs. A pair is a single adjustment done between two things: a glyph & a glyph, a class & a glyph, a glyph & a class or a class & a class. If a glyph is in a class and you have a class-to-something pair and you also have the glyph-to-something pair, the glyph-to-something pair takes precedence (it's an exception to the class-to-something adjustment). Basically you can group all glyphs that are similar on the left or in the right side into a class and then you kern that class against another class or a single glyph, and that had the same effect as if you kerned each glyph from the class individually. So class kerning is faster and saves on the number of pairs.
