By day I'm a professional boom operator working in the motion picture industry any other time, I'm a sound geek with a passion for teaching my craft. There are many aspects of sound that aren't taught anywhere online because many professional tricks are kept hush hush amongst pros. This is where this channel is unique. Anyone can have an opinion as to what sounds good but you many not know why or how to get the best possible sound for your movies, videos, podcasts or narration. Many people charge for the information I'm providing here for free so put on your listening ears - Sound Speeds!

Your smart. Ima give this a try
👍
This doesn't seem really correct. Your 76dB "gain" is just a marking from Sounddevices. You can't rely on that to compute EIN with any accuracy.
Two things... if you can't trust a high end manufacturer like Sound Devices, you can't trust anyone. Secondly, my results are exactly matching their claims.
@@SoundSpeeds You can't. The advertised "Gain" is just marketing, most of the time. When it means something really, it's related to a non standardized 0dBFS level. RME uses EBU (+18dBu = 0dBFS at 0dB gain), Yamaha uses negative "gain" values (Value=level in dBu at -20dBFS), ... Sound devices, from their specs, seems to target 0dBu at -20dBFS for 0dB gain. Anyway, this value is not accurate. So you'd have to re-measure the actual dBu level for the chosen gain's 0dBFS level. Your way of computing EIN is using a difference between 2 gain levels. But the accuracy is influenced by 2 factors you don't control: 1. The accuracy of the gain difference between 50dB gain and 76dB gain. You suppose it is exactly 26 dB. OK, this is probably accurate enough. 2. The level of your tone generator. In your method, this is your ONLY reference to an actual Voltage or dBu level. You suppose you get exactly -50dBu from your tone generator. This is VERY unlikely to be the case. The only way to know is to measure it with a proper instrument. I measured my own CT100 test tone, and it varies from -51dBu with 600 ohm load to -40dBu with a Mic preamp input as load. As expected for such a cheap device, it is very much dependant on the load. If you were trusting Sound Devices' specs, you would compute the following, from their specs and your measurement : - Max input level is 14dBu for 6dB gain - So max level at 76dB gain should be 14-76+6 = -56dBu - EIN would then be -56 - 71.35 = -127.35dBu You may read my review of the MixPre-3 II, which uses similar (or identical) Preamps than your Mixpre-6 II, I suppose: www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/re-review-of-sound-devices-mixpre-3-ii-multichannel-recorder-review-advanced-mode.50437 I measured -130.4dBu EIN A-weighted where SoundDevices advertised -128dBu (150 ohm - bandwidth not specified) (By the way, you say your figure is matching their claims, but I see nowehere -130dBu EIN un-weighted in Sound devices specs. And your measurement is unweighted.) I also measured the 0dBFS level at 76dB gain at -55.4dBu, and EIN at -127.7dBu un-weighted. So quite close from the above estimation from the specs and your measured noise.
OK...
this works, GOAT
😎
I see it's universal that sound guys are out of work.
Sad but true right now
Finally someone with sense!! Thank you brother! Works also on Win11.
Awesome. Glad to help.
Can you do a video on how to get audio in the wide shot, different techniques ect.?
I'll add it to the list
Do you still have that Mic? I have one that I like it, sounds a lot like NT1(not A) but a bit warmer
Yes
Does anyone else just throw it up in the air, turn around and catch it? Just me then?😂
Just you
My Deity Connect was hell for me and ended up that I couldn't use it on my SoundDevice recorder. But I did use it directly on my Blackmagic Camera and that way I never had issues (or I never perceived issues).
👍
I have tried almost everything. But I never thought about this, thanks so much!!
Sure thing. I hope it works for you
when using shoes mk41 and cut 30 ...when do you use a cinela cosi indoors ?
When you need more wind protection that a foamy can provide.
@@SoundSpeeds but there is not wind indoors ?
When you swing the boom around, yes, but the Cosi is more wind protection than you'd probably need
@@SoundSpeeds so when swinging the boom around indoors when talent moves around the room ? Is the cosi too much protection or is it just right for most light wind or swinging boom around ?
The non-fur version would be fine
Thanks man
Sure thing
well I have this ambient series 5 slim with internal cable and quick release in front of me ? how do I break it in or season it properly ?
The buzz/ squealing noise on this video intentional??!
Unironically, this has helped me decide to try and buy this mic for recording harsh vocals lmao. Your dedication was not in vain, thank you sir
Awesome. Glad to help
I built my own ribbon mic once, and everything was fine until I sneezed. The ribbon was shredded! I don't think loudness is a big problem for ribbons, just violent plosives and transients.
👍
From you eating a sandwich in your kitchen to you wrangling cables and this, your channel is entertaining but also a great resource for sound. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Allen, do you have any other courses related to sound? Apart from this. I am definitely gonna buy this one in the near future but was curious to ask anyway. If you don't have any other courses, are you planning on making a new one?
I have a course introducing the sound utility position and one dedicated to the 5 jobs of the production Sound department
@@SoundSpeeds Thanks Allen. I think I am most interested in the lav mic one for now. Will send you an email in the near future.
👍
This was beyond informative, I was actually wondering about this top 2 weeks ago when I saw video lights on a field. When I asked how they were powered, the said put put, but I heard no generator noise in the audio.
👍
There is definitely a way around this problem. Turn it off, unplug it, have it shipped to another state, and then replace it with a battery backup system. Problem solved.
I agree. Not all CLTs have battery generators though. Sucks but true.
@@SoundSpeeds It should probably be part of the VTO’s (do they still call it that?) kit or part of the rental package. Leave the gaffer out of it. Way back in caveman times, my place of employment rented out what was essentially 10 12v marine batteries packed into 2 road cases. It was very much a kludge, but it was quieter and more reliable than the crystal sync Honda 650 we rented.
Most Gaffers like the rental on battery "generators" so like to argue for all things power to be their domain.
oh god, finally. I hope I'm not jinxing it by commenting but I've had this problem for about a full year with it sometimes crackling and sometimes not. I was going crazy and nothing seemed to work. I just did what you recommended and my audio seems to work now. again, knocking on wood. thanks though!
Good luck!
My very first job as a student PA on an AFI conservatory 2nd year short (I was an undergrad at a local college) had a location in Burbank directly underneath to the airport landing path. Every five minutes we had to pause for a landing plane. 😅 I wasn’t involved with post, but I think they ended up doing ADR for all those scenes.
I feel you. I've shot in the rlught path of the world's busiest airport in line with the runway and airplanes 100 feet over our set.
@@SoundSpeeds it was very reminiscent of playing stickball in the street around 5:45 when all the adults were coming home from work. “Car! Time out!” except it was “Plane! Hold the roll!”
👍
As a singer this is fascinating. As someone with dysphonia when I try to speak 'normally', this is crushing 😆
😆
Noisy RED camera? Boy do I know that feeling. Not like I spent a good chunk of post sound on our thesis film cleaning that crap out of our audio 😅 The Arri 35BL2 used in the shining was quieter than the Red Scarlett we had.
👍
Did you notice how it handles moisture? Been working with g4's mostly, and they seem to survive even being dropped in water. Also, having worked a little with theos, the screen protecting plastic is not as thick as g4 one, and tends to crack if you are not careful
I haven't run into any issues with moisture in the air. Yeah, there's a bit let material making up the Theos vs the G4. May not be as robust because of it.
😂😂
😁
What is the Max Sound boom pole mentioned @8:00 ? I didn't find it when I Googled it.

Allen, what's your current go to Lav mic?
On this channel, W.Lav Pro. Favorite overall, DPA 4060 or 606p0
Not a terrible video. Very basic but none the less ok for a beginner. Although after hearing Allen say that half the text mentioned in the video are no longer done in the professional world is suddenly making me feel like my education is outdated 😅.
🤙
This guy spends more than half his time querying chat GPT about himself or other channel's owners. How is that 'sound knowledge'? Get over yourself. You could have asked it more of the actual sound questions like 'explain audio signal chain' or 'what is a compressor', but no. 'who is sound speeds on youtube' lmao
What's wrong with asking something like that to start with? Sets a baseline for searchability
@@SoundSpeeds Baseline for what? You didn't see the point of my comment. Baseline for sound knowledge should include baseline sound based questions, not 'who is sound speeds'. But I recommend doing this again but with Meta AI. Much smarter than this. Although as others pointed out, you were using chatgpt that is more than a year old.
OK...
May you be blessed for many moons

These videos raise Allen's blood pressure. 😂
Truth
Hey Allen, with prime day here, what are your recommendations for accessories for lavs? Thanks!
Nothing on Amazon for pro use. I'm not sure about non pro use except maybe nonmedicated moleskin and Shamwow.
Zoom F8n pro is on sale for $830 new, Hirose to DC cable is also on sale. Not lav accessories but good deal
That's a great deal
I don’t like 1st and 2nd assistant sound as well. I feel like it muddies the waters as to what certain positions do and makes it easier for producers to eliminate the position.
Or cut our rates
@@SoundSpeeds in italy we don't have these problems. Still trying to have producers hire utilities instead of trainees on 10kk budget films 😂
😓
I use alkalines sometimes when i really need to get as long of a run time as possible om wireless. You can still get a couple of hours extra if you do, but i avoid it if i can.
Lithium disposables are going to give you far more battery life.
@@SoundSpeeds Yea you are right i totally mixed them upp. Was only thinking about the dispposable part.

Hi there. Thanks for that awesome review. One question: how much is the delay? Does it cause any problems when combined with eg sennheiser g4? Would I need to apply a delay for those analog systems in my mixpre to not have any weird sounding mixed delays and non delays? Thaanks in advance, Matthias
None that you'd notice. It's either 5 or 6 ms.
Thanks!
👍
I'm not 100% on this, but thinking chat GPT couldn't know who you are because you're in a private browser sounds wrong...
It's supposed to come from the internet and I'm highly searchable.
I just clicked this video and then my audio went back to normal itself
Yikes
Unfortunately my realtek audio is just irreversibly doomed, but I was able to switch to device audio which sounds way worse but has no crackling. This happened after a trip with my family where I connected a pair of bluetooth headphones to my computer and it worked fine, but when I got home my regular audio sounds all crackily. It sucks.
Sorry but good luck
All the time I spent on indie sets making everyone be quiet for a minute lol. Glad to hear it’s not something I need to really worry about. Great info, thanks!
Sure thing. Thanks for watching.
Hp omen windows 11 returning for third time under guarantee, will they solve crackling left speaker issue. .?
🤷♂️
The video is good, but your comments on top of it ensure I’m getting two perspectives and increases my chances good information haha.
