Over the Next Horizon

Over the Next Horizon

Greetings fellow travelers. Have you ever found yourself somewhere completely new and wished you could share the experience with others? Have these adventures ever sparked new interests, hobbies, or skills in you? This is my attempt to share these traits in myself. Come with me as I explore the back country, design and build vehicles for these trips, realize I didn't think of everything and do it all over again, and find ways to see the world from angles that are completely new to me. Let's prepare for and take a trip Over the Next Horizon.

    Have you tried running this with the cooler pipes disconnected? Another channel did this and showed that under normal conditions the oil does not get pumped through the cooler. There simply is not enough pressure.

    That’s very possible. I thought about installing an electric auxiliary pump. I haven’t tried running it with the lines disconnected yet.

    When the breaker tripped and you restarted the machine it went back to zero, which is why you needed to refill the fresh water tank and empty the drain water because you were, essentially, starting all over again. That’s how digital appliances work. Except for some aquarium and reptile environment controls, most digital appliances do not remember where they are in a setting. They often remember the last STARTING setting and require that you push the start button again.

    G'day, I was curious of how you found sleeping in the tent in cold and snowy climates. I used to have a slim clamshell style and in snowy conditions, ice would form on the inside. Have you had this issue with yours? How does the tent retain the heat well? I understand you use a diesel heater but have you slept in cold conditions without it or would you say it is a must? Thank you in advance.

  • @overthenexthorizon8271
    @overthenexthorizon8271Ай бұрын

    Hello, I’ve slept in the tent down to 0 Celsius with just a wool blanket. It does a pretty good job retaining heat even if the wind is blowing. I did notice when the temps got colder than that, the mattress can’t retain the heating even added a reflective blanket beneath me. There is some condensation on the inside of the lower half of the clamshell in cold weather when not using the heater but the tent and upper shell are condensation free. I noticed there are open spaces beneath the tent where I could install some 1/2 inch closed cell phone and place a sheet of something below it to protect it. If I did more winter camping without the heat, I’d probably try that. I also thought about placing something to allow some air movement beneath the mattress to limit condensation. Hope that helps.

    The sides scrape a lot better if you use 2 hands. One to hold the spatula and the other right above it to steady the vibrations and hold the scraper exactly where you want it. Similar to how you held it towards the middle of the process(before you switched back to one hand). If you start out that way, it makes a big difference. Nice video.

    Thanks for the comment. I considered that too. If I was just washing a few things, hand washing makes more sense. However, I'm planning on multi-dish meals with a higher dish count and I found the amount of water needed to rinse after washing by hand was about 5 times more than using the dishwasher. We'll see if it's worth it.

    On mine, I replaced the whole unit. I would assume if you replace the screen with a comparable version and reconnect the ribbon cables, it should function as the original did. That said, I did find an aftermarket adapter that allows mounting a DIN radio in the dash. That adapter adds a row of climate control buttons below the unit so you no longer need the touch screen to use climate control. When this radio of mine fails, I’ll probably take the aftermarket path. Thanks.

    Just wondering how it's going. I have a 600 watts wind generator on a sixteen foot pole that's attached to a piece of angle iron that I bolted to the barn rafters. Im getting 150-275 watts today out of mine. I'm thinking about raising it three more feet. It's chained to the side of the base pipe instead of being in the top of it. It's concreted into the ground. I think it would get cleaner air if it was at nineteen feet. I have mine charging twenty lead acid batteries but I have a 24 volts 100 amps lithium battery 🔋 coming Wednesday and I'll get another one in December. I have 1600 watts of solar panels hooked to a 4215 BN Epever charge controller, and a 24 volts Aims Power inverter charger 2000 watts. I used a piece of 1 1/2 inch ID pipe. There's only five feet above the barn so it doesn't have guy wires yet. I already have another set of five blades and hub to use to build another wind generator. There's two short videos of mine spinning on my channel.

This one is on a fixed mast and I haven’t tried raising it yet but I’m considering placing a mount on the bus roof to get it higher up. So far this style blade is proving much better than the fixed blades on my other turbine. When I get wind that isn’t obstructed by the tree line, I’m getting about 50 watts from a 10 mph breeze. This turbine maxes out at 200 watts though do it’s not bad so far. Thanks for the comment.

    Ive been working on this myself, and here is what I have found for what its worth. In my opinion hands down the best water filter that will remove virus/cyst etc along with dirt is the nano ceram with carbon filters (carbon for smell and cleaning ability) They cost more but you wont need a UV light. Also I have found and bought what I believe to be the only filter in the world that removes soaps/oils/shampoos in real time is a Wavebrite Grey water filter module. Its 2 feet long so if you remove the UV light you can slide this filter in (so much for space savings/lol). The filter is good for like 5000 gallons (can be refurbished so Im trying to work out away where I can go through it when removing soaps but bypass when Im done using soap. So many people are working on these showers if we all pulled our resources, I think we could figure it out. Its almost like all the new solar generators where you can buy all the parts (battery/charge controller etc) and cobble one together or buy one in a nice package that takes up less space and looks nicer. So thats what Im working on. Thanks! Good Luck! Just my 2 cents...take with a grain of salt and certainly just my opinion trying to help! I wish they made the soap removal filter about half the size!

    You're going to need a better pump. Once your filter start to remove contaminants they will definitely reduce that pump down to a dribble. This is the major problem people run into, not sizing the pump correctly and not under the amount of back pressure your pump is going to see as the filters start doing their job. Remember these filters are designed to work with 50lbs plus of water pressure.

    Goodaye from Australia. I have or I should say we (wife & I) have a bundutop unit. I concur, they are an absolute pleasure to camp in, setup & tear down. My setup is modified for us, yet some of your concerns have been addressed in my mods, so you may be interested in them. 1st. The 2 piece ladder. (No longer a concern for you, but for others benefit) Ours is stored on the roof in 2 parts in a specifically designed built frame. Accessed by standing in rear wheel of vehicle. 2nd. Solar panels 2 X 120w = 240w mounted to front of roof. Note, it is not uncommon from my experience to have Anderson plugs provide poor contacts, just pull contacts out, clean, lube, refit - issue solved. 3rd. We also store maxtrax X 4 (recovery boards) on the rear of the roof. (Again, not an issue for you but may benefit others) 4th. I have attached a cord to each internal end portion of the leads going thru the walls to the awning. Why? If when attempting to teardown it's really windy there is a tendency for the canvas to go external BUT by pulling in on this cord the walls must comply and fold internal, (great peace of mind mod believe me). Once set up the cord just sits in beside mattress. 5th. Electrical. I have made a switch panel out of the aluminium cover over the existing electrical components. A). I switch the roof light thru it, as it saves sitting up from bed to shut light off. B). I switch an externally added led light that illuminates the ladder for night use. C). I switch a 12v electric blanket, yes a very cosy opulence if I do say so myself. D). Run power to 2 X reading lights (leds) that are attached to aluminium uprights and switched independently there. E). You're gonna love this one. Power to our permanently mounted diesel heater, yes it's on board all the time. Oh, we also utilise the remote to power the heater so you don't have to come out from under the covers to warm the tent so you can dress etc in total warmth, told you'd love it. 5th. Shoe storage is via a shovel handle, yes a shovel handle. I made mounts on my roof rack for the shovel, space it just wide enough to place to shoe tips through and heals retain shoes in place. The external awning covers them from moisture, works a treat. 6th. Internal storage, we place our clothing on-top of the heater enclosure I created. Side benefit, they're warm to put on too, haha. I didn't figure that one out, but ha, I'm not complaining. 7th. Entertainment. Now this is one you didn't cover but I'm glad to include. I created a folding/pivoting support bracket that is attached to the roof light retainer. Fold down for use, fold up to store. Note to self: fold up to avoid banging head on it. 😂 In this I slide my mobile phone allowing us to lie in bed watching movies or TV online. NB. This support bracket also containers a thermometer providing external & internal temps. It can be -5°C outside and 29°C inside with heater on. Note, you can view images of my setup, as I created a Instagram page solely for the reason I was being quizzed on my set up. I have included the address for your benefit. spokeweal1

As for the lines attached through to the outside awning, I just had trouble with the elastic cord on mine stretching in a strong wind last week. I was thinking of options to provide better tension both when set up and during tear down. Thank you very much for all the great ideas! I always appreciate hearing how others figured out solutions!

    @@overthenexthorizon8271 I need to include my wife found the original mattress too firm and it was also very heavy, weight best alleviated in my view. We have been avid campers for many years, so many many years ago we acquired a self inflating double mattress. We found it to be completely useless for overnight stays as it was meant to be 100mm density but never inflated to more than possibly 60mm, super uncomfortable, so it was placed in a corner of our house & forgotten about it. Well we needed a replacement mattress for the Bundutop, a lightbulb "💡" moment went off in my head, I located the self inflating mattress let it inflate for a week, bingo 120mm thick and very light in comparison to original mattress. Problem - correct width, but too short. Another light bulb "💡"moment, I reckon a diesel heater will fill that void and it did. You'll need to be aware that 150mm (6") comes out of the original mattress length but for ourselves that wasn't a problem & as I said, we have a double self inflating mattress that fits just right with the heater housing I built. You work it out for yourself. Regards.

    Interesting product. I didn't catch if the Eco mode was available for all time cycle selections. Also, is it prohibited from using hot water to start with? And of course, I'm in Texas with 100 degree temps and a newer pex pipe closer to the ground surface. Right now, cold water comes out hot water without turning to hot water. :)

    Thanks for the comment. I have used 200 degree water to start with once. It seems to tolerate it fine. I didn’t notice the plastic supply tank getting soft and I’m sure it would do fine if you were connecting directly to a water source instead of filling the tank too. It also seems that eco is its own cycle. I haven’t noticed the ability to change the cycle time when I use that setting. Maybe others have noticed a different experience. I think mine is one of the early models.

    I have a similar issue...Do you know if the relay/solenoid is supposed to cycle on/off when the ignition is on....mine seems to cycle on off every few seconds while I have ignition turned...I would have thought it would just click once....? Eventually it stops clicking after 5 cycles. I see 12v at pump, but dont hear it buzzz. New fuel pump (2nd one). If i check resistance across the power terminals of pump seems to indicate open circuit, which also does not appear to be right. thanks if you have time to provide comment.

  • @overthenexthorizon8271
    @overthenexthorizon827111 ай бұрын

    Thanks for the question. I was wondering if my relay had failed initially but it definitely only cycles once per activation of the ignition snd it stays engaged once the engine is running. I agree an open circuit at the pump doesn’t seem right. Mine does cycle quickly so I had to get help from another to turn the key while I watched the pump with the meter.

    So what i don’t understand is: instead of draining into the container can I drained into the sink? Also can I use liquid soap for dishwashers? Does the capsule machine heats up the water when washing? And least but not last does it consume to much electricity? Do u really like it, it does the job?

  • @overthenexthorizon8271
    @overthenexthorizon8271 Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the questions. First, yes; it comes with a longer drain hose that allows you to drain directly into the sink. I’ve just been using the tank so I can check the amount of waste water it produces. You can use any soap that would normally go in a dishwasher. You just apply a small quantity to the inside of the door and it will mix into a cycle. As for power usage, it draws around 245 watt hours for a cycle. That should be similar to a slow cooker for one meal or an electric kettle heating up. It does heat the water when it runs so you don’t have to give it hot water to start. I do like it. It’s small but it does a good job cleaning. It probably would hold between one meal and one day worth of dishes depending on what you use and how many people you were feeding. I saw a comment about the UV light failing on someone else’s who used it much more than I have. It sounded like the company sent a repair part but it had to be installed. Overall, I think it’s a good choice for small loads or a place with limited room. I probably wouldn’t rely on it for a family though; at least not for every day use. I expect future versions of this will likely improve the long term stability of the product as it becomes possible to do more long term testing. Again, thanks for the comment.

    From what I can see, the additional oil cooler must be lower than the adapter. If it is higher, then during the standstill the oil will drain into the engine and will make it impossible to check the oil level.

  • @overthenexthorizon8271
    @overthenexthorizon8271 Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the comment. I completely agree. The instruction sheet does indicate how much extra oil volume the cooler adds to the system. I think I’m going to fill it and try to find a way to indicate a level without opening anything on the engine. It doesn’t seem logical that a standard dipstick on a low point in the system would be useful when there’s no valving to keep oil in the cooler.

    @overthenexthorizon8271 I had been burned by Kickstarter stuff before so I'm not a backer... but I've been following the company for a long time. No worries! I really appreciate the content as I wanted to make sure it was actually a real thing as even their own website shows different interior baskets and stuff throughout so it didn't seem like they really finished everything but I'm glad it's working for you, I think I'm going to risk it and buy one. Very narrow counter space between the cabinet and sink where this could actually sit so I don't have space for other average counter top dishwashers that are less functional cube like boxes. I saw recommendations while shopping the Bob dishwasher out of France where people were using pots and pans that you could remove the handles. There's some high-quality camping gear that Stacks together really well and there's even some higher-end but not terribly expensive residential stuff that have removable handles now. I'm also interested in renovating a utility trailer into a versatile road trip setup so I'm going to start following you now. Have an amazing summer!

    @@NoZenith that all sounds great! I’ve been burnt on Kickstarter in the past too but this one actually seems to do what they claim so far. I absolutely agree about the high quality cookware for camping and nested storage that’s available now. It’s a great time to build or stock a camper. I sure hope you enjoy converting your trailer. I considered using one of those at one point. They make great camping platforms! I hope the videos help or give ideas about what to try or what to avoid. If there’s anything you’d like me to cover, feel free to drop a line. I’ll see what I can do. Thanks so much for the support!

    @overthenexthorizon8271 I'm sure I'll learn something! I've got a VW GTI that has a rather substantial tow capacity everywhere else in the world to North America, and that was a selling point. I didn't want to get a pickup truck or a stand-alone camper because I want to be able to unhook and leave my camp set up while I'm visiting somewhere for a few days. Having a car to drive around would be awesome instead of having to pack up and put everything away every time I wake up 😆. I think if I was completely living out of it having a mobile home like yours, vanlife style, might be simpler. I even considered the extra axles or weight limits on limited-access turnpike's and toll roads so I know I only want a single axle trailer which also helped me commit to the smaller car as that reduced the weight quite a bit. I'm definitely trying to absorb that information on failures to avoid, haha

    Thanks for this! We're thinking of getting one for our off-grid setup. How does it perform on the shorter settings? I'd love to know what the maximum draw is if you've checked it out. Looks like the heater uses about 800-900W? Thank you :)

  • @overthenexthorizon8271

    Thanks for the comment. I just ran a test on the Eco Mode cycle. It runs for two hours snd 24 minutes. The max power draw with the heater on was around 850 watts and it used about 225 WH of electricity to complete the cycle. The 15 minute standard wash cycle ran the heater almost the whole time and used 195 WH of electricity to complete a cycle. I built a video about it. It should be uploaded before tomorrow if you’d like to see more.

    Interesting. I got one of these through Kickstarter and I've never had a problem with the drain tank being able to hold all the water. 7:18 You can feel the fan blowing out when it dries out the top right vent. I'm curious to know how much power it draws in the eco mode.
