    Fine video and very nice receiver but I don't understand this hard "attack" of the sound in SSB TECSUN radios, when at the beginning of each sentence, the sound is aggressive like Pan pan Pan, and it surprises me every time, it's not soft and it's very unpleasant. I noticed the same thing on the PL880 and I know why the TECSUN have this recurring problem, that's why I hesitate with a good old SONY... the only TECSUN which doesn't have this problem , to my knowledge, is the S2000... And I don't know where this problem comes from and why TECSUN doesn't remedy it !! and no one ever talks about this problem!! Greetings 😀

  • @o00scorpion00o
    @o00scorpion00o3 ай бұрын

    I could try 11m as I also like 11m but it's hard to know the swr and know the efficiency of the antenna, it was designed really for the FT-818 and radios like it that have SWR, it works better with the FT-818 and icom ic-705 because you know exactly how to adjust the antenna for lowest SWR. If the albrecht has SWR meter and regular Tuning + Lithium battery it would be perfect, a modern version of the Albrecht would be very nice. i do have an 11m whip but i don't think it is as good as the antenna in this video.

    The PL-680 has a by far fatiguing sound in comparison.

  • @sachininspright
    @sachininspright4 ай бұрын

    The 680 has large conventional cone speaker of 77 mm dia and high sensitivity (16 ohm) that needs only 1W power to drive So it produces more natural, balanced sound which we are used to from older days. The 880 however has smaller 40 mm, but ultra-dynamic speaker (made of Mylar material) which has low sensitivity (4 ohms), therefore needs much higher power (3W), which is produced by Class AB amplifier (superior). Therefore, while the 880 sounds great for music (very resolving and dynamic sound), it sounds different from conventional radios that we are so used to. I'd imagine, those who listen mainly to music on FM stations will appreciate the 880's speaker. While those who are mainly into AM and DXing would fine the 680's speaker more to their preference (and also save money in the process).

    The Tecsun PL-680 is a decent portable SW radio. I use it when I travel because my neighborhood is blanketed with omnipresent digital noise. I also use an inexpensive wind up XHdata AN-80 antenna. This one also does airband, which outperforms my Radtel 470x HT, when used as a airband receiver. The only feature lacking is a squelch which would have been good on airband. Thanks for the video.

  • @o00scorpion00o
    @o00scorpion00o5 ай бұрын

    @bunnieslover3181Hi And thanks for watching, for 30m you'd need 6.96 meters of copper in total for the most efficient operation on 30m. Obviously this is too large to be supported but the mount I have in this video. Here's the manual with the different loop sizes manuals.repeater-builder.com/MFJ/MFJ-9232/MFJ-9232manual_rev2.pdfrecommended by MFJ. The multiband loops work but won't be as efficient as the single loops. Still, I made up a loop with 2.75 meters of pipe and worked all over Europe on 30/20/17-M and 20 watts. I made one up for 20m using the larger 4 meter loop if I remember correctly and made contacts from Ireland to North America with 20 watts. I used a portable fiberglass mast for support. I was really surprised with it's performance. You could try thick wire also might be easier to work with.

    @@bunnieslover3181 You'd have to find some way to hold the tuner box with 7m of copper pipe, it was designed to use wire, if you can find thicker wire maybe try this first. I have the MFJ-9535c and it's a lot bigger and I sit it on a table but for larger loops I use a fiberglass mast. It handles 150 watts too. I've had a lot of fun around Europe with 4 meters of loop, that's just about the limit for the MFJ-9535 C to hold on it's own. Let me know how you get on with your experiments.

    @o00scorpion00o5 ай бұрын

    @@eyadabusharar2457 This is a hard one for me to explain what I think and the reasons why in a shortish reply but I'll give it a go. If you listen to SSB the the PL-680 is the best, by far as the audio quality on the 990x is truly rubbish as it is with most DSP radios which is the No.1 reason I avoid them. Even if you don't listen to SSB and listen to Medium Wave and Short Wave bands using SSB has huge advantages to reduce the effects of fading and sources of noise that the filters on DSP radios often can't remove because the noise is still within the passband of the filters where as using SSB eliminates one side of the carrier altogether and this method is called ECSS. The advantage the PL-990x and H501x + the PL-330 is that LW and MW reception is greatly improved when using an external antenna, unfortunately this is not the case with the majority of radios including the PL-680. On the PL-990x you have to press and hold No.5 until CH-5 or something like that appears on the screen, this disconnects the internal antenna, if you don't do this then the radio will overload. If you listen mainly to the Shortwave bands than I would get the PL-680 because the radio is a lot cheaper and performs excellently with external antenna, I always recommend an external antenna if you can get the Bonito MA305 with optional longer whip it's a tiny antenna with remarkable performance. If however you want to only use the telescopic whip antenna then the PL-990x has slightly better performance but you might find that with all the electrical noise from modern electronics that you can't pick up much more than noise and will have to head out of town in the country. In a noisy environment an External antenna might not work too well either but it will always work a lot better than inside. You can see if sources of noise are coming from your home, LED light bulbs, phone and laptop chargers especially non original imported junk can cause a lot of noise. I hope I explained the difference between the 2 radios ok ? 🙂

    Hi and thanks for watching. I was using an external antenna and the antenna switch would be at Local or Medium to stop or reduce the effects of strong signals or overloading when using an external antenna. Using the telescopic whip I would put the antenna switch to DX. Since making this video our local 252 Khz transmitter was switched off and the antenna destroyed so I would probably not suffer as much from overload today. Hi Mark, I quite forgot that I had previously commented on this video. Is the ATS-120 supposed to come with the waterfall display? Someone who commented on the SWLing blog mentioned that it does, but he did not elaborate the firmware version. I've tried asking the seller from China but to avail, their automated translation doesn't work. That is, they don't understand what "firmware version" is. The seller is probably just a drop shipper and doesn't specialise in shortwave radios. I have since purchased a Malahit clone based on the V2 form factor running 1.10d by HFDY and an AirSpy HF+ Discovery SDR. The MLA-30+ loop antenna that I have is set up indoors, but is kind of noisy when paired with the AirSpy. I'm not sure if I want to climb up the roof to install the MLA-30+ outside as it's the rainy season in SE Asia with lightning strikes. Between the ATS-120, ATS-125X1 and ATS-125X2 (with WiFi) which one would you purchase again if it were damaged or stolen? 🙂 I was thinking of getting myself a birthday present and I'm not sure about the ATS series. Many thanks!

    Hey, how you doing ? No, the ATS-120 does not have a waterfall. Any antenna is going to be noisy inside, get it on the roof when safe and make sure to ground it and ground the coax inside your apartment if you can. @@o00scorpion00o I'm doing just OK, mate thanks for asking. Just been busy watching the events around the world, including the protests in Ireland. 🙂 I've watched videos on the OM0ET ham channel on YT; I distinctly remember he has an ATS-120 and ATS-25X2 that were upgraded to the latest Arduino software with a waterfall spectrum display. No doubt that the Malahit clone hardware is more powerful with its MSI001 tuner chip but the DSP2 with ver 2.30 is rather expensive at the moment. The DSP2 is like what the V2 models used to cost a few years back. To add further confusion, two Malahit clones based on the 1.10d firmware are also for sale as I write this: the V5 DSP1 model with the speaker on the left side and the V9 DSP1 model that uses the same case (with twin antennas) as the DSP2. The V5 costs about 166 Euros, the V9 is priced about 185 Euros while the DSP2 (firmware 2.30) is as high as 285 Euros. I'm not in a hurry to get the DSP2 since what we are seeing on the market are the early versions that will be improved next year. In the meantime, both the ATS-25X2/Max Decoder and the ATS-120 have caught my fancy. If you would have to let go either your ATS-120 or the ATS-25X1, which one would it be? And yes, I'm still keeping my PL-680 all the same.🙂

A friend of mine goes to Manila every year for the last number of years and absolutely loves it. The freedom from Western society is incredible for him. He has a friend here who married a Woman from there somewhere up the mountains. But he goes back now every year to the village and really loves it and the people. He says, Manila makes Dublin look poor ! I would keep the ATS-120 for sure ! Send me a link to the ATS waterfall video please.

    Is the battery enough for a long time?

    Hey, long time, hope you are doing good ? The battery will last several hrs booth TX and RX and there is the option of buying more batteries and a larger capacity battery. I have a battery bank, you know the ones for charging phones and tablets ? it will provide 30 watts via USB C and I got a USB C to 12v cable on Amazon which will allow me run the 705 for a whole afternoon and probably much more both tx and rx at 10w. It's a very neat trick using the USB C to 12v cable and I can charge it from any USB C power + It also allows me full 10 watts on TX ! or very close. Icom really should have USB C as standard. Very cool radio, very happy with the 705 and Glad I did not get the Xiegu 6100. More videos to come, I hope to make more out portable away from home.

    @@o00scorpion00oEverything is fine with me, despite the increased radio interference in my region, I am trying to catch any signal and it fascinates me. I see that your creative radio process is also not standing still, new antennas and new opportunities)

    @@wavezone2566 Unfortunately noise is a big issue for many people but at least the opportunity exists to work portable. One reason I put my Kiwi SDRs online was to give people who are not as fortunate as I am to live in such a quiet location a chance to be able to listen to the bands. I've actually had the Super Antenna since around 2019. It's a good antenna, with 100w I will always be heard with it, great compact antenna that can be set up anywhere. I used it one day, it was too windy for the tripod so I used the supplied clamp and clamped it to a gate to a field.
