Its obvious this was made after ADA. I used to hang out with a girl who had a lower spine injury from a vehicle accident back in the mid 1980s. I would go along with her to move her wheelchair past obstacles in many places she wanted to go but without someone with her, she could not. A live music venue she liked had 3 steps going into it and no accessible entrance. Older college/university campus buildings had similar issues. Some adaptive equipment was around then, which enabled her to drive and be more independent. Hanging out with her taught me about what life is like with paraplegia.

Ms. Alana Shepherd is a wonderful, kind lady and a force of nature. I rehabbed at Shepherd in 1986 and she engaged and encouraged me and all who came during that difficult time. What they have done there since then is a testament to the caring, motivating kindness she and her late husband have for the neurologically impaired. God bless you Ms. Alana.

The "why would anyone want to date me" question is frequently on anyone's mind who is dealing with this type of permanent injury, though I'd argue it's more problematic for men because many women assume that we cannot perform. It's tricky cuz you want to explain and dissuade the person of an assumption they may be making but it's still early days and you don't want to explicitly address sex and your anatomy situation.

I somehow missed a golden opprotunity to walk again and I'm still trying to understand what happened, but I do know that on October 4th 2015 I suffered a stroke and a herniated cervical disc at the same time in the early evening of that Sunday, while at work in Buford, Ga and I was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta by ambulance and then later on October 19th, 2015Grady Hospital discharged me to North Fulton County Hospital in Roswell, Ga to receive post stroke acute physical therapy yet no one tried to find the reason for my severe neck pain at either Grady or North Fulton County Hospitals, It wouldn't be until 2018 that Dr Nicolas Wieder at Kaiser Permenente Town park Medical Center Kenesaw, Ga decided to have me get a MRI done of my neck and he discovered that I had a herniated cervical disc causing my pain, but during 2016 I was having regular appointments with a neurologist at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, this particular neurologist had been on the team at Grady Memorial Hospital when I first arrived at Grady in October 2015 and during one of my appointments with him he suggested that I probably should have gone directly to the Shepard Center for acute physical therapy instead of North Fulton Hospital. I believe that the physical therapy staff at North Fulton tried to do the best for me, but nobody seemed interested in addressing the source of my pain in my neck and I know now that the pain in my neck in combination with the many prescription drugs they had me on was causing side effects which included brain fog, blurred vision, etc... the combination of these side effects greatly restricted my ability to gain more progress through physical therapy at North Fulton In 2017 I spoke with my medical insurance company and they said that if Grady had refered me to the Shepard Center it would have been approved, but now I am still not able to walk and I' still fighting to get my meds right, it appears to be the anti seizer meds that give me the most problems.I tcan't do anything about it now, but I would just like to know why I wasn't sent to the Shepard Center. The Emory neurologist that told me that I should have gone to the Shepard Center said that it wasn't hi decision and that it was in fact the decision of the Grady Hospital social worker to decide where I should go. I feel that somebody dropped the ball and today they don't even realize how bad they messed upI love North Fulton and what they did for me is stilll helping me get through the daily life of a hemi palegic, but they didn't have the experience that the Shepard Center has

The Shepherd Center is a phenomenal place to heal, rehab and experience community. I had the privilege to meet Mr. & Mrs. Shepherd over a decade ago as an inpatient. Their life's work has greatly impacted so many lives from around the world. I was blessed to be there again in 2022.
