I'm James Jr I do most of the videos on our used engines James Sr is the owner of BMR Parts & Marine Located in Burnsville Minnesota. We learned a long time ago motors sell better when customers can see them run it also became very difficult to set them up and run each of them when a customer was interested. We have been in business since 1997 we do a lot more then used outboards the motors that don't check out in our inspections are parted out and the good parts are sold.

85psi sounds low is that a normal number for this engine?
Yes it is the low compression point makes them easier to start you're thinking compression on a 40hp which is between 180PSI and 220PSI. There isn't much info online for small engines low compression. Thanks, James Jr
Is the 90 easy to steer at higher speeds? My old 100 HP Mercury has a lot of torque.
Depends on the boat and the steering cable. also the old 100hp I believe had 2 blocks a 4cyl or a 6cyl that makes a difference aswell. I've never had a complaint on steering for these engines if that helps. Thanks, James Jr

I have question sir I have same outboard I was on the lake took water over the transom the trim went up and stayed on had to disconnect the battery to stop works later fine any help would be appreciated
Unfortunately there isn't much anyone can do or say over the computer. You most like have exposed wire somewhere that the water got to. You would need to take it in somewhere and have actual diagnostics done to figure out why it actually happened. My guess is just that a guess. Thanks, James Jr

I have a 40hp remote Johnson and a 50hp Remote Johnson. We see both remote and tiller outboards get traded in it's random what we see come in and when so there is no estimate on availability.

A 20 inch is a short shaft the 25 inch is a long shaft
Sir I'm not sure where you got your information but please don't spread misinformation on my page. 15in is a short shaft, 20in is a long shaft, and 25in is a extra long shaft, there is also a 30in that is extra extra long shaft. After 15 years in the industry this is basic knowledge for anyone in the marine industry.
I should have bought this instead of getting a quicksilver power head.

Unfortunately I am not the person to ask on that. The consumption changes per boat weight, prop size, and gear. You're gonna have to find a forum on that info as we sell new and used engines we don't run fuel consumption tests.

Nice. I have the same motor and it's reliable and easy to work on as far as maintenance. Pushes my 18.5' fiberglass boat at 33mph but I'm sure I could tweak the height to get a little more. My compression test only showed 115+- psi on each cylinder but I only gave it about 3 seconds of Turing it over...I'll recheck mine because now I'm curious if it should be higher. Thanks for the video.
Warm up the engine and hold the throttle wide open while doing the compression test also 3 seconds seems a bit short turn it over till it stops going higher. Make sure the battery is fully charged. 110PSI or better on these is still a great PSI below 105 can cause issues but some people run them at only 90PSI. The main thing you wanna see is the same numbers across the board on all cylinders within 10% of each other. if the difference is greater then 10% there are much bigger issues.

Pretty low compression compared to stock
The compression test was done Cold with throttle closed. If it was done warmed up after running decarbonize and with the throttle open I'm sure it would have been closer to the 125 PSI you expect to see on them but with 105PSI on all cylinders and no scoring in the cylinders or operating issues I didn't have a reason to redo the test or check OEM spec on compression before the engine sold. I stand behind what I sell and if this question was raised before it sold I would of redone the test as I have had to do on video before for our customers with the engine warmed up and throttle open. Also with 29 Year old motor you expect to have some wear on compression unless you put new rings in. We have a very good reputation with our outboards that we ship all across the country and will continue to sell. Thanks, James Jr
