    Vito was a really kind man, you could turn to him, you could ask him. I don't think it was possible to communicate with Michael the same way as with his father, especially to an outsider.He was not even an assistant to his loved ones. Michael is an evil man, unlike his father.

    Memes aside, this is an excellent opening scene for one of the most critically acclaimed films of all time, not merely because of Marlon Brando Jr.'s scene stealing act, but because it firmly establishes the character of Vito Corleone right from the get-go. He may be a mafioso, but he's a man who's first and foremost about family, seeing an acquaintance's daughter being harmed stirring his own moral principles and sense of justice, regardless of the fact that he operates outside the law and has his own vigilante concept of justice. His business is (literally) cutthroat, but he still holds onto ideals such as believing in proportionate response to injustice and not taking advantage of another's extreme emotional state to extort, instead falling back on a unique favor-for-favor method of payment, one that you would expect between family members and close friends. Asking for nothing more than that save for gratitude, humility, and friendship from his client. It feels like it justifies calling him "The Godfather" right from the very beginning of the film.

    The look of dismissal that Brando gives to Bonaserra at 5:23, as the Undertaker asks the Godfather to "be (his) friend...Godfather?" And then kisses Brando's hand...Oh man!! My dad laughs out loud every time he sees Brando's reaction! Same with me now! Brando sort of childishly furrows his brow and slightly swings his body as he considers Bonaserra's petition for friendship...it's such a subtle collection of body language combined with the actual language of the script, the set, the collection of actors here... It just doesn't get any better as far as film goes,...and I'll add the caveat, in my own estimation. Aside from 2001: A Space Odyssey and the original Korean film, "OldBoy" this is the finest that cinema has to offer. I'm 48 and a film buff - if anyone has some obscure, foreign film they'd care to bring my attention to, I'd certainly appreciate it!

    I am Filipino and Catholic. In our culture being godfather to someones child as baptism is a very special honor. It means not only that you are a very close friend, you are also someone whom the parents want to be an influence in their child. You are essentially a second parent, and if anything should happen to the parents, you are going to be entrusted with their childs life. The point is, Bonna Serra did not even need to offer money. He only needed to be friends with the Don as he is supposed to be. He only needed to tell him that his daughter had problems, and Don Vito being a second father to his daughter will take care of it for him

    They kill people when they're in the way of business, but they don't kill carelessly, wantonly, or for hire.

  • @lufsolitaire5351
    @lufsolitaire53515 ай бұрын

    They are businessmen first and foremost. Money is the name of the game, they may kill in pursuit of that goal but they aren’t indiscriminate butchers. A made guy or associate going around murdering is considered a loose cannon and would be punished accordingly. Cowboy-types as they call them don’t last that long. Killing is bad for business and is a last resort or again, if you stand in the way of or threaten the bottom line.

  • @davidgeslani48
    @davidgeslani484 ай бұрын

    They run a racketeering operation. Sometimes it results in dead bodies, especially when dealing with people outside of their protection. This is generally bad for business though because dead bodies attract a lot of unwanted attention. What they really want is scared people. Scared people pay a lot for protection, dead people don't pay at all. So they'll break your legs if you cross them once, but they won't kill you as long as you keep paying tribute to the family and generally stay out of their way

    I see that a lot of the comments here are about Marlon Brando. Well here is a fact you may or may not know. The actor was not even supposed to be there. During shooting they found him on the street, I guess he took a liking to Betzy the cat so they added him to the scene! Creating iconic imagery and a trope that would be used over and over again.
