Ah, see, there's the secret option: The Third Shift! For five years (until COVID hit and we no longer had an overnight shift) I did about two thirds of 2nd shift's work, all of mine, and about half of 1st shift's duties as well. They still complained, but the store ran so much better back then.

I've worked both and it is hilarious how different the vibes are. I've also done a closing at 9pm and was back the next morning at 6am for stocking crew. Really different vibes then! 😂 I just hated it when openers smack talk the closing crew for not doing more of x y or z. I'll would usually pokt out how much stuff closers actually do and they quiet down. One time they asked how I knew and I just looked at them and said, "cause I was the ONE closing cashier last night. I had to do all that by myself."

This is so real. Where I worked, morning shift never even picked up a goddamn broom. I actually quit because every time I'd come in (there was like a 2 hour overlap of morning and night shift being there) they would start telling me everything that wasn't done or wasn't done right even though I was staying late most nights to make sure everything was how it needed to be. Then they'd leave 15-30 minutes early and leave everything a huge MESS. But boy did they always come in the next morning and bitch to the boss about what nightshift did wrong even thought it was all superficial things like not restocking the toilet paper in the bathroom or a few dirty dishes that were brought to kitchen after nightshift went home.

I work "twilights" shelf stacking and this is so relatable. Day crew happy to dump their messes because they know the staff working end of the day has to clear it up, or face the nitpicky Store Manager down the line.

Thats so real. I work overnight and its just 4 of us running the whole store all night.... then morning crew all comes in at around 5am and theres this old lady who has a real "ok your captain has arrived" energy and she walksaround the whole store marking shit that could be cleaner or any messes we missed or if the coffee is low and needs to be remade or if the trashcans are getting full again. Cool, whatever... its the fact she talks shit about our crew like were too lazy to do it when in reality, its 4 OF US EACH RUNNING OUR OWN SECTION OF THE STORE, but morning crew got 8-12 people and the second they get busy, theyre all calling fir back up "hey we got a long line at casg registers, can someone come up and help"... must be nice to have extra workers around to help when your job gets stressful. Overnight, i run the kitchen.... someone else runs the registers... we got 1 manager and then theres someone cleaning around the store. Thats it. And we cant leave our stations or we will be behind on our work.

I did both of these shifts in fast food. This is super accurate. The only difference with fast food is that it’s always a lot more messier. Nothing ever gets done on a closing shift because it gets far too busy. Then, opening shifts are far too busy to get anything done. So we’re all on the same boat I guess 😂
