  Hello, I’m fairly new to kendama I’ve been playing for about a year and I haven’t really watched many videos as it’s something I just picked up and started doing! I see a lot of similarities between kendama and skating but the thing I struggle with is know what tricks are called and what basic tricks/ fundamental tricks I should learn! Any suggestions or recommendations would be very appreciated

  You'll get plenty of opinions (which is good, definitely search around for what pros think is "best") but I'll give my approach which I find is most enjoyable, but not necessarily the best for progression. Sure, learn the basics with bending your knees, pulling up to all of the cups, getting to spike, but then just pick a trick you like that looks doable and go for it using any youtube tutorials or clips for reference that you can find. Any trick you see labeled as beginner/intermediate is well within your grasp, and it'll be much more fun to learn something that you actually want to hit. It might be tougher to learn stuff if you skip the "basics", but you'll also pick that stuff up as you try to learn whatever your aiming for. Just go for it, have fun with it. That's what I like, but I am also not a kendama pro so maybe factor that into your choices😅
