I'm the first doctor within a "socioeconomically lower family" within which it was not seen as achievable to get A levels (Leaving Cert?)   Honestly the best thing to do is get both. I recommend that if you’re heading to college, buy whichever one that’s you need the most in the summer before your senior year, and buy the other device in the following summer. You can always trade in devices if you want to upgrade, but I grabbed a HP laptop for $524 used for 256 GB storage, and 8GB ram in junior summer, and I’m now getting the iPad Air with around the same specs, and I pay for iCloud storage. Get the best of both worlds :)
