For the ends of the basting stitches, I usually twist twice around (inspired by a surgeon's knot) while doing an overhand knot rather than just once around and it stays much better (and not require a double knot)

Interresting that you don't use the inventor's instructions ; baste on inside, begin with a knot, and use dry, medium heat iron so as not to warp the circles.

I think cutting away the back and only ironing from the back helps.

This is the very best video I’ve seen on this method. Does this work with ovals too or only circles? I’m trying half inch ovals and it’s just not working for me. The size in and of itself is challenging but I wonder if this only works for circles? Thanks again. Excellent video!

Another way is to take a larger circle than the finished size circle, trace, and cut out. do your basting stitches around this larger circle THEN take the smaller actual finished size circle that you want and place it in the middle of this larger fabric, draw up your basting stitches and proceed with the rest of the steps

I am having trouble with the finished size. Well first, im not sure what the finished size means? Does it include a qtr inch past the point of the"goose"? Anyway, when I finish, without trimming, I end up with a 2.25-×.5" vs 4.25- 4.5" rectangle. Am I supposed to trim that down to 2 x 4? I would like to see your trimming steps. I'm getting lost in there somewhere. Thank you!
@twiddletails3 жыл бұрын
Hi Carol. The finished size is the size the block will be when sewn into the quilt. A 2.5" x 4.5" unfinished block will finish at 2"x4". Be sure to check the accuracy of your scant 1/4" seams. You may have to test to figure out exactly where you should sew on your specific machine to get the correct size at the end.

thank you for this video. Is there wiggle room to true up the geese when you're done?
@Roxanne40023 жыл бұрын
Carleen Brigley I don't see any wiggle room. I do believe the seam allowance will eat the corners up, maybe not.

No, these are meant to turn out exactly the right size. :)

Thank you very much for your excellent video. Most helpful were the exact measurements that you mentioned at the beginning: my finished size FG units have to be 3 x 1.5 inches, and your calculations have let me work out these sizes perfectly. And so quick too! Thank you again. Janie @ Belhaven Quilts

I'm working on a pattern that shows this method, but I had never seen it "in action" before. As I still consider myself a novice quilter, new things scare the heck out of me!! I'm so glad to have found your video showing exactly how it works. I really appreciate it!
