  That ending image is so primative. Nice work on that speed run. Xcom used to be my go to time sink on long plays, lasers simple cheap and sell for more then they cost to make in this version.

  No, I never played through TFTD. So at some point I'll play it casually first. In parallel I'm working on some speedruns in Star Control 2 & Zeliard. Both games I ran before. The next new speedrun I'd like to learn is either MUDS, Dune 2 or Dungeon Keeper 2. It depends how I feel about it when I'm "done" with X-COM.

  Good that the OG devs are back for a sequel ;-) They go under the name of Pistol Shrimp Games now and are working on a sequel to this one called Free Stars: Children of Infinity. There is a kickstarter running (closing in 32h).

  Streaming/recording DOS footage strikes me as a pain to setup. Is this running in a virtual machine?

  For this video I used a Toshiba Pro 480 CDT with Win98 on it. But in a couple of "real hardware" videos, the ones without sound, I used a 470 CDT with Win95. To capture my laptops I use and VGA to HDMI adapter where the HDMI is plugged into a cheap USB capture card. On the other side VGA & Audio is plugged in from the 480 CDT. The actually tricky part for me is to set up the DOS environment with the correct drivers so that the games are playable & I get sound + music. I still have some more optimizing to do there. If you want to know more, it'd probably be easier for me to show you during one or my twitch streams.

  Awesome vid. I love this game. Your speedrun reminded me of the essential storyline. It can get pretty complex with all the side quests from the different races you encounter, it got all mixed up in my head over the years. I bet you could bring that time much closer to 40mins with some fine tuning and focus. Yeah I would blame the chat too :P

  Yep, it is part of speedrunning to route the way through the game to reduce it down to mostly essentials. I only go out of the way to get a huge speedupgrade -> the portal spawner. Maybe close to 40min is possible in this version. I still need to look into some optimizations which are different from the PC version (that one is pretty optimized). Any if you want to see more quests done: There is also the 100% speedrun, which was defined of getting all allliances & items. I didn't route it yet for the DOS-version with the lander glitch. It might be fun too.

  You save the game by talking to the sage about the topic "Record Experience". And the hotkey for loading is F7 and choosing your save.

  Wait, I just realized, if you think of the weird moving "overworld" map as a spinning 3d model instead of like 30 stars moving back and forth, then it starts to make a lot more sense why certain moves are possible/impossible.

  Yes, indeed. It is still hard to judge where you'll be able to move to from a system to the next just by watching the projected turning-motion. My brain is not very 3D compatible :D

  The multiplayer via Gameranger doesn't work for me as there seem to be issues with running it on linux. I haven't tried for some years though.

  i'm not sure if it's part of your routing, but you do not have to trade your crew to the Druuge for the rosy sphere. They will trade you either one of the extra Mycon Eggs or one of the hyperwave casters (you don't need both the one from the Spathi and the one from Arcturus) for the Rosy Sphere.

  Yes, that is part of the route. But in order to be fast the Umgah Caster is picked up very late in the run.

  Nice! I like your current item setup. You are not using Fuego spell against Agar because you wanted to save all of the charges to deal with red slime slimeys? And have you tried to fight Jashiin at speed 9? It's not that hard as it sounds, he can be facerolled with constant jumping and slashing.

  I like this item setup too, but it's rather safe and sacrifices time for safety. (I could skip 1 Magia Stones to save gold. But LVL6 gets really dangerous then imo.) Yes, in LVL5 the use of Fuego is tightly planned out. So I don't have to go to the town twice. I have not tried to fight Jashiin like that until 5min ago... I died almost instantly after he couldn't use invisibility anymore. But it was pretty quick, that's true :D Btw, would you like to commentate for this run at a charity event (ESA)? It'll be on one of these days 22-25.2.

  Cool. You did some good improvments. Not sure if finishing Jashin with Guerla is faster than finishing him with sword, but still very nice run.

  I'm not sure about that either. When he's running back I sometimes use Guerra because he can regenerate HP. So it's sometimes faster to finish him before he gets that chance.

  Could someone do a Zeliard 100% speedrun where he or she unlocks all seven spells and loots every chest and cache?

  That's an interesting idea to include chests & caches. Back when I opened the leaderboard on www.speedrun.com/zeliard#100 I defined 100% as: "Gather all magic spells, wearable items (boots & the cape) and the crests. You may trade the Crest of Glory for the Knight's sword. Beat the game, beat all 9 bosses and rescue the princess." I'll give your idea a thought, but my first impression is that it would be tedious to check if someone really collected every chest. Also other games usually don't include useables (potions, gold) as objectives for 100% runs. It has been on my mind for some time to do a 100% run, but I also have so many other games I want to speedrun. So I just haven't found the time for it yet.

  I don't know the game and I won't add it to my to-do-list, sry. In my to-do-list I have a ton of casual games I want to play but also a good amount of speedruns I want to learn. And most likely I'll have to drop a lot of those due to that fact that it'll take too long to play all of those. If you want to see a game be speedrun the most direct way is to do it yourself ;-)
